STW to the rescue hopefully.

Basically, we haven't left Sheffield in almost 3 years and my Mrs is starting to lose it.

We have next week off and just booked a cottage in Braithwaite, Keswick only be contacted this morning to say we were double booked and we've been given the boot. Now I have to go home from work to a very er, excited, other half and try to make other arrangements.

I'm crap at stuff like this. It's last minute, everywhere is packed. Does anyone have any tips on a nice spot to be for 3 nights from Sunday or Monday, anywhere within about 3 hours of Sheff?

We have a 13 month old son so preferably something self contained with a kitchen. I'm really scared to book into a regular B&B when young'un can't be trusted to sleep all night and still regularly screams the house down. Don't have to take a bike as won't have time to ride it so local trails not essential.

She doesn't like my Travelodge idea. If we don't leave the house next week I'll be threatened with divorce.

You could call Sally's Cottages and see what they've got??

The Lakes in August is going to be very expensive. Good luck!

The clowns who double-booked you should give you something for the inconvenience

Look at Airbnb for Eden Valley. Lovely place on edge of lakes - and Eden Valley is lovely itself.

Lots available at a glance in Penrith, Salkeld, Greystoke, Langwathby and Armathwaite.

2nd Caldbeck, completely different feel to the rest of the Lakes and only minutes off the motorway. Hesket Newmarket is a nice little village, there's a very basic campsite round the back too.

Keswick is still rammed as my parents constant moaning confirms but further afield is a lot quieter this year. Further down the Eden Valley and in to the Yorkshire Dales part of Cumbria there is a bit available.

Try the Troutbeck Inn between Keswick and Penrith. They’ve 3 lovely self-catering cottages behind the fantastic pub.

It’s our default when heading up to the lakes. Nic and Al who run the place are lovely

Don’t know how much joy you’ll have at this time of year, but one worth saving for future reference even if you can’t get in now

Thanks all, we got something. I just forwarded all these links to the boss and she found us a cottage near Braithwaite. It's just over £300 for 3 nights and it's the size of our living room. Wasn't really prepared to pay much more than that. The stuff on Airbnb is extortionate.

Looking forward to our first 'holiday'.

I might squeeze my bike in and spend a morning at Whinlatter.

Some of these suggestions look good, I'll check them again when we're a bit more organised.
