Yeah, definitely wear Five Tens to your sister’s wedding.

This argument has been done on here before. You should wear X to Y event....

I would want my friend/family to feel themselves at my wedding, most of them did gets dressed up to my wedding but I knew there we some that just putting a shirt on is like wearing a tux to them, so I was well pleased with them doing thier dressing up thing. No one should feel they have to conform. Mucky five tens wouldn't be great but if the OP is gonna buy new ones, then that, to me, shows he made an effort.

haven't read all the replies but I'm disappointed in how long it took for sandals and socks to be mentioned!

Right well that's that cleared up then, good effort everyone 😂

On the smart shorts thing, I wear shorts pretty much daily between April and Octoberish, so I think of smart shorts as the ones I have that don't have cargo pockets, not camo, no holes, stains or paint etc.

Not a formal occasion, invited round to dinner at my partners parents, never been there before, only met them briefly before, and probable future in-laws. They have horses on their own grounds, and go shooting, so standards are presumably high. Hence my overthinking it.

I want to be presentable, but still me.

So far: polo shirt is out replaced by black short sleeve Oxford shirt, and box fresh five ten sleuths in black, probably green shorts.

and box fresh five ten sleuths in black

Already said it, but (I) think black trainers look a bit shit with shorts. Possibly accentuated by how pale your legs may/may not be

good idea, if you go boat-shoes/jumper round neck etc they’ll think she’s landed a winner and you’ll only disappoint them after that 😉

Yup, slip-on chequered Vans are always the answer 😁

Been done, the guy 4th from the left with black suit, black shirt, white tie and slip-on chequered Vans. Not me, that was my second cousin at my wedding. No shorts though.

Vantastic

I have the grey sleuths, I wear them to work frequently. Think large, corporate office where it's normal business attire. Suits for some, trousers/chinos for everyone else, and shirts, no ties. I do pedal a brompton in and they're much grippier than a pair of leather soled brogues!

How in the 21st century have we ended up with a scenario where exposing male flesh is taboo?
If it's hot we should be allowed to wear suitable clothing.

Indeed. I do timekeeping at galas with my kid's swimming club and the official clothing is your 'whites': white shoes, white poloshirt, and white skirt or trousers. Shorts not permitted at anything more official than intra-club competitions, despite it being a million degrees on poolside. Maybe I could wear a skirt?

@CountZero lucky you! I dreaded promotion, mainly due to the terrible clothes to be worn in the mess.

I did find suitable alternatives that met with dress etiquette eventually. When I left the whole lot went to the charity shop.

I’ve managed to get to nearly 68 without ever wearing either, just the thought brings me out in hives.

If it's hot, the shirt is off too, I don't care if anyone disapproves

Hmmm, most people I know who match that description will either be;
Old money; wearing ripped, dirty, decades old clothes and probably wouldn't care what they or you wear for dinner.
New money; Dripping in designer trash, will judge you instantly if you are not clone of them.

If you not sure which they are, their choice of vehicle(s) is usually a dead giveaway.

Unless it’s over 25°c just wear a pair of trousers

I’m mostly in shorts from April to September

I pretty much wear shorts all year round now, never used until a few years ago. Have since put most of my trousers in the charity bins as they were just gathering dust.....

At the risk of a flaming I have to say I'm disappointed at the response to deck shoes. I sail and have a pair of 10 year old deck shoes that are possibly the most comfortable shoes I own. They're too scruffy to wear for a wedding, but that's not what they're for.

Vans, Etnies, Five Tens. Oh yes, they'd all look much better on a 50 year old at a wedding!

Yeah, that was the part that got me as well. Was visiting Corps HQ one day in a suit on casual day and we asked the PMC why we could not dress down like the normal people. He eventually gave in and we thankfully could ditch the jackets and ties. He chose to step down to a cravat.

Do not miss that part at all.

Are they really your feet? Cos they look child size, have you cut your toes off to avoid VAT on your shoes?

Nike do some nice, not bulky skate shoes, I have a grey pair that I wear in the office. Not expensive either, got them from Deichmann and don't think I paid more than £35.

Can't vouch for how good they are on a skateboard though.

Vans Sk8 Hi.
I'm 50 and have 6 pairs at last count.
I'm currently wearing black MTE's with a mauve stripe and laces.
Scotty Cranmer BMX editions for riding.
Van Halen editions for gigs.

What worries me is the suggestion that a short sleeved shirt should be worn. Do you want to look like an Isreali politition or a darts player? Not planning on wearing it outside your trews I hope.
Stop buggering about. Shorts are not smart. You are just letting your personal preferences get in the way of convention which you obviously care about or you wouldn't ask. Nearest you'll get to smart in shorts is with deck shoes as thats what the boaty types wear and they have some funny but nearly traditional idea. Long socks of course. No shirt with a collar should be worn untucked unnless its is a polo shirt AND you are playing polo. No shirt with a collar should have short sleeves unless you are playing polo or darts or pretending to look flash but actually bloody silly in some form of team or corperate kit where good taste was long abandoned.
Thought about asking your companion?

Says who?

Honestly, where do people get these 'rules' from, and why do they believe anybody should obey them.

Tough choices.

‘drill’ vs ‘espadrille’/‘sharp’ vs ‘slack’

For reference this is for a wedding, in Barcelona in August (bloody sister-in-law loves heat, I do not).

Barcelona in August isn't that hot, just wear some light trousers. It's a wedding and you could make a bit of an effort for just one day.

Otherwise deck shoes.

TOTW ?

STW can be magical at times, Not often you can laugh so much and get some quality shoe shopping done at the same time.

Really like the 510 sleuthes and slip ons, but as I’m not riding I really cannot justify another pair of 510s and the Shuperb sandles, though I probably shouldn’t confess to that.

Nothing to add to the sartorial advice, think most bases have been well covered above. Agreed that black 510s wouldn’t be my go to for this, tan yes, but not stealth black.

I do wear my all black 510’s at work in the city and have been for the last 4 years or so, no one has batted an eyelid yet. Great for the Brompton too.

Serious answer- Vivobarefoot Gobi (I think) in brown leather, no socks.

That’s with ‘tailored’ shorts in navy and a white, well fitted, shirt tucked in.

My wife has approved this outfit for a selection of summer events, so it must be passable!

Yep, anyway shorts to a wedding 🙂

TBH most non-young people over here seem to wear trews unless it’s beach or holidays even when it’s 40+

An if it was a church jobby I’d really not 🙁

Fivetens

Or as above with the vans or etnies.
As your 49 no one cares anyway, as you pointed out, only young people buy smart clothes.
Edit: just saw its a wedding, in that case full crocket, linen trousers, shoes no socks😁
Or chinos and shoes

Just been riding around the local area finding pubs inbetween night shifts - on my e-bike (with CB Mallet pedals) in my shorts and white trainers - so off the back of previous comments in this thread, I've just ordered some Velosambas 🤣
