Being canvassed for a 2 year role at a salary of 60,000 AED / month no other benefits. Is this enough for a family of 4 to live off and pay for secondary schooling for 2 kids ??

And...of course....is the biking any good ?? Does the LBS do Santa Cruz ?

No expert but I will never forget a friend of mine who was moving there for work saying how he had finished packing everything he owned for the move, apart from his books. Now he was a studious fellow and had a large-ish library so I asked why he wasn't taking them with him and he said it wasn't worth the potential hassle by the censorship police.

That's when it really hit me, what it means not live in a free society.

Sorry I know this isn't what you were asking about.

Health Insurance is mandatory in Abu Dhabi and it needs to meet a certain standard. I wouldn't be taking a job without helth benefits. No health insurance, no work or residency visa.

Daman is the Abu Dhabi government run "private" heatlh insurer and you can get an idea of costs and coverage levels: http://www.damanhealth.ae/eDamanApp/en/home/index.html?version=R110.4.4

60,000AED a month is about £120,000 per year tax free which should be ample for a family of four to live on although the private schools will be expensive. Some ball park school stuff here from a reputable institution: http://www.nordanglia.com/abudhabi/

Rent in Abu Dhabi is fairly expensive. Try here for the latest rental prices.

School fees run at around AED 35k/year per child.

EDIT.. forgot to add.. not sure about the mountain biking in Abu Dhabi.. it's pretty sandy (duh!).. I'm in Dubai and we're closer to the mountains where there's some singletrack.

you can ask about cycling here:

Been on holiday there to Emirates Palace, Didnt see any MTB'ing to be done. Girls really do need to cover up when venturing out of hotels, nice Nicaraguan cigars can be had for 30p though!

Every time I think of UAE etc. as places to live and work (aside from the unsustainability of the place) I think of this tale...

worth a read
