I've been banned for a couple of days, didn't notice. It was after I had a thread pulled and a warning about language. So I suppose it's a three strikes thing?

It did feel a bit unfair at the time, the pulled thread was about a nice looking atlethic body ( Tom daly) and it was pulled because it was sexual, now I've seen any number of threads with girls in. ( I know 2 wrongs don't make a right, but still, unconsistant right? )

Overall though it's ok. And I'm trying to be good!!

I reckon based on that last post that Solo is one of the regular poster mods.

Interesting...

I've been banned a few times. Basically for being a gratuitously offensive bell end! Each time was thoroughly deserved really!

Anyway, aren't bans, to big hitters, like ASBO's on an inner city council estate. A sort of badge of honour and credibility

Some former STW dwellers earlier today......

I see that hora's just bought a balaclava so the mods won;t recognise him when he's posting filth.

Thats not how it works. Everyone earns their own ban !.
People get banned for the things they post, not for what another member might write.

people get banned because of how much offence a mod takes at what is written it may be earned but the scale is variable and poorly understood by all users

Go on Mods, y'know you want to.

I feel thats theres too much of this happening recently, members asking the moderators to revoke bans, threads by members wishing for the good ole days, etc, etc.

God forbid the people who frequent this forum and subscribe and such like should have an opinion on what happens here eh

I would have thought it was obvious that the Mods really can't change a decision once it has been made, for if they did, it would become a right dogs breakfast here.

Decisions have been changed and I am not sure an air of infalability helps. Its probably a reasonable point that, like refs, once the decision is done they will stick to it.

IME, some folk get their kicks in ways that aren't in the best interest of the forum. imo.

We all think that of some users hence the mods job is a difficult one.
They cannot please us all all all of the time.

I think i joined STW very soon after the hammer of ban was struck on TJ and keep hearing the name about these parts. What did he/she do to warrant expulsion?

I have to say there was a lot of banter pre the BigBan(g) what with Fred/TJ/TSY to name a few, I enjoyed their posts, most make me LOL and some I just thought "get out of this then sonny".
I remained a very sparce place after this for a few months, I for one didn't think it would survive, but it has and I'm glad some new faces have joined in, some others have stepped up a bit and the banter flows again.

But the tone of the place has definitely changed, for the good or bad,met hats for you to decide.

It's actually an uncanny likeness to one of those hit with the ban hammer - although he has more hair on top and is slightly better looking 😛

I tend to lurk more than I post.

I can't say the previous banter ever put me off. I just used to avoid threads that were more than 3 or 4 pages as you generally knew it was just TJ having an argument.

Nuclear power threads aren't the same that's for sure!

I think the mods do a good job all things considered. Given so many posts and so few mods, I'm surprised there aren't more bannings.

Reference the thread that led to this one, nobody who got banned as a result can be surprised - the banning line may be variable, but if you push that hard you know you're over it! I don't get why some folk (pretend to) expect there to be crystal clear rules and regulations regarding acceptability.

Reference Fred (and to a lesser extent TJ), the forum is a better place since their bannings IMO. Whether that's because of a lack of them or a lack of people biting at their threads / winding them up is moot.

for me the best things about thiz forum have been the range of views expressed on it and the sensible if slightly imperfect moderation.Don't like to see anyone get banned but I accept that sometimes there's no option .It is strange to see so many banned in one go

Well last night's thread was bizarre even by STW standards. Ok, there was semi-serious point at one stage (what is/isn't allowed in terms of swearing and swearing avoidance) but beyond that it was seemingly little more than a wind-up game or a challenge to see how long it would last. It got a lot further than I would have imagined but the outcome was hardly ever in doubt.

So are the latest "rests" temporary or LT?

It was kinda like watching the bad lads at school baiting the teachers until detentions were meted out.

As in those days too, I was happy to be a bystander and watch it turn to worms.

Good for a giggle though chaps, top effort.

I was really enjoying it, in a sort of semi-horrified, slow-motion car-crash kind of fashion.
Reminded me ever so much of this:

TJ was an intelligent and knowledgeable bloke, but had some fairly unconventional opinions. He could have a fairly abrasive debating style when he put his mind to it and could never, ever walk away from an argument (or admit when he was wrong). Ultimately, he did it once too often.

IMHO, his banning is a loss to the forum as I think his positive points outweighed the negative. I could say the same for some, but not all, of the other banees.

Well, it does seem that those who get banned feel the need to tweet, email and Facebook about it; and given how much time they spend on here you wonder how much else they have going on.

TJ was an intelligent and... .

He did seem to take it all a bit too seriously, i used to feel quite sorry for him and did occasionally worry for his mental health.

what cougar said

There was also a number of posters who would jump in every time TJ posted simply to provoke a reaction and he never failed to disappoint.
I would often have said the same thing and got no reaction from them.

I also suspect that if enough folk complain about someone they will be banned simply because the mods get sick of the number of complaints so they do something to reduce this.

I think they often make the mistake of thinking that complaints are reflective of the forum view rather than just the views of those who are annoyed - see also the recent classified rule change and thread as another example.
It may be better to actually ask rather than just base their opinion on those who are unhappy and actually ask the happy ones what they like and what brings them here.

IIRC the thread on the poster you would most like to meet was "won" by TJ and Fred both since banned permanently.

Some folk do stw more than others - its true if any activity you care to mention.

To come on here and criticise either those who use it a lot or those who rarely post seems like you are taking it to seriously

Its not up to me how often anyone uses this place and I judge no one for their use whether excessive or rare.

The chat forum, though, has always been an entertaining backdrop to a mug of coffee and a biscuit. It would be a shame if the banter is modded out permanently one day.

In the bad old days, there was probably an argument for saying those on the nets too much had 'nothing else going on'. Thing is now, when one can access STW via all manner of mobile devices, it does not really hold true.

This is spot on.

They can't or won't approach the forum to provide moderation that's more fluid and in tune with how it works. By avoiding this relatively simple solution they are contributing to the dumbing down of the thing that made them. FERROUS!

Generally I would say no as surely everyone has an "in case of emergency' stw login. Okay the forum username gets banned but they can easily come back under another username. Okay ip addresses can also be blocked but most users probably have access to multiple devices running different ip addresses, which all helps to bulk up the recent '12 billion' unique users story 🙂

"I've started, so I'll finish."

I don't know of course, but I suspect that TJ's exodus wasn't down to complaints, so much as a view that the lengthy arguments weren't constructive to the feel of the forum as a whole. Actually, not to single out TJ here, I'm referring to those affected by the Great Cull generally.

Pages running into double figures debating whether Jesus wore a helmet and undertook people whilst on his iPhone were, presumably, not part of the Vision for the forum. Feedback from the Admin would suggest that more people are actively using the forum since the competitive arguers were dismissed, though I never really understood why. If you're not interested in something, don't read it; it's not mandatory to read every thread on the forum. Maybe that's just me being odd.

TJ should have been banned just from the chat forum and left with the option of posting on the bike forum. Yes I know he could get pretty belligerent on spoons as components but his contributions were largely helpful.

I've only had a warning, that was for relaying the story of a friend who was touched inappropriately by someone in the television industry. Of course the mods realised that no such thing could possibly have happened. 🙂

It's a forum provided free of charge.

What's the problem? Perceived inconsistacy delivered by unpaid volunteers.

Some people should really, no really get out more and enjoy life rather than vocalise about their perceived rights on a forum.

IMHO
