The boy’s birthday is rapidly approaching and given he wants an e-scooter and isn’t getting one, we’ve decided we can set up his new bedroom with a projector and screen.

Been a very long time since I’ve looked at such things - are there any decent ones at around the £250-300 mark?

The problem with projectors is they are noisy.

In terms of picture quality etc, I have one that i am pretty sure was 60quid, maybe 70. Its good more than good enough for movie night, spend the rest on massive speakers to drown out the fan.

We got the eldest boy one a couple of years ago. Vankyo V600, I think it was about £150. Keep an eye on all the ones that tout 1080p picture quality because what they generally mean is they can accept a 1080p source and will downscale to 720p or even 540p. The Vankyo was the cheapest one that had true 1080p.

It's still going strong, picture quality is really good once you've removed the brighter sources of light from a room. Ours is generally used for movie nights, although playing Mario Kart 8 on a floor-to-ceiling screen is where a projector really comes into its own. The only thing is, as joshvegas said, they are LOUD. And eventually will become full of dust.

If you can get one, something like a second hand Optoma HD200X with low lamp hours might be worth a look. Maybe a look and wanted ad on AVForums could help.

We still use ours with a 93" screen and despite it only being 1080p, it compares very well in watch ability to the 65" OLED Panasonic behind it - mainly for the sheer size of picture as the TV is much more defined etc. Doesn't detract from the visual impact a big screen gives though.

Can't beat the disappointment of getting something you didn't want  for your birthday when you're a kid 😉

Just joking, but.... how old is the kid and has he even hinted he might want something like that?

Ha, yes - don't worry, he very much wants a projector etc and his expectations are fully managed iro of the e-scooter.

To be honest whilst he likes the idea of an e- scooter there is really nowhere to use it round here and he'd probably end up either a) not using it or b) doing something stupid on it or b) then a)

Be his 10 birthday and it'll be mainly for PS5 use. We're shuffling rooms around so he is getting what is currently my hifi room and I'm being moved out up into the attic. The projector will get loads of use accordingly.
