The OP doesn't 'do' soccer and has never comprehended the desire of others to stand and shout at a bunch of overpaid girlie boys kicking a ball around and the fact they've created what is clearly not the first craven image to one of their 'Gods' he finds frankly astounding.

There are times when one has to question ones membership of the same species.

There are lots of sports and activities I don't "do" but I tend not to pass judgement on them. It's like on here - I just ride a bike, but most of the posters seem to know the names of, and can recognise, many professional cyclists. I just assume they are a bit more passionate/knowledgeable than I am. I don't think that makes me somehow intellectually superior to them.

Famously refused to do a Nazi salute in Berlin in 1938, and was swiftly dropped from the England team (Who all did the salute).

Great gag, i mean really great. I'll be sure to use it at work on monday. Everyone will fall about laughing.

No no no, don't even start with your social liberalism we'll be passing a hat round for a statue to Dav Brailsford next, give me a break...

He did a job, got paid really well for it, that's all, nothing that rates a statue.

Clearly the OP doesn't "do" correct grammar either. I hope my improvements to your mangled syntax will be of use to you in your quest for cultural and intellectual superiority.

Football is a noble and unifying sport. Did the opposing forces play rugby on christmas day in 1914? No - it was football they played.

Football and particularly the unifying and universal nature of the game means things to a lot of people. Calling it chav ball in really quite a sad indictment of yourself.

Nothing wrong with football, something we should all play and agreed it can be a unifying sport. However erecting statues to those who create a career from it's moneytisation, if there is such a word, is not my idea of noble, sorry.

As a public school educated lawyer from the home counties, I can think of nothing more satisfying to have my following of the misfortunes of Tottenham Hotspur to allow me to be classed as a chav.

My eyes have truly been opened. Thank you, OP, you have done great work there. Truly great work indeed.

I think that if it was any other manager than Ferguson then you "might" have a point, but he's been there for 26 years at the same club and he is pretty much the most successful manager in the history of the game.

I'm a Liverpool fan.

igrf,

I wouldn't normally bother to do this, but:

a very rich club (football, doesn't matter) has chosen to spend a relatively insignificant amount of its own (creditors) money on commemorating a person who's brought success to them by making somehting and displaying it on its own premises.

I don't care very much about football, but I am absolutely baffled that anyone could get even remotely worked up about this.

'Chavball', 'Wendyball'...is there some sort of derogatory football name generator on STW?

Only ever hear these hilarious terms used to describe it on here. How anyone who likes cycling (and I love both football and cycling) could describe another sport in derogatory terms is beyond me...I mean seriously, have you actually seen what most of us look like?

Do you not have a lot going on in your life, igrf? (I don't right now, obviously)

Any other company, let's choose, for example, Innovia Films, a successful multinational company based in Wigton, Cumbria.

If they saw fit to put a statue of of their current CEO, paid for with their money, on their own premises, to recognise, in their own way, what that person had contributed to their current position..

...why do you think anyone would give a flying **** what you thought of it? And why do you think it's any of your business?

Football's a private enterprise.

Did you know that GSK's HQ is built in the shape of a spoon? That's right, they're commemorating success. The bastards.

If you mean it looks like Mel Gibson,

that's because it is Mel Gibson.

It's a statue of Mel Gibson playing William Wallace in Braveheart.

For all the people on here that don't like "wendy ball" and "chav ball" they do seem to comment on it a great deal.

Probably unaware of the fact that without a doubt and as much a it galls me to say he probably is the greatest football manager to have ever lived. God that hurts! The statue is also outside the ground.

Or maybe they are very aware and just think its clever.

If you don't understand it don't try to comprehend it or present yourself as in anyway knowledgeable on the subject because it actually makes you look rather intolerant and small minded.

guessing the OP had nothing to play with except his big sisters barbies as a kid?

big jocks statue was long overdue at celtic and has bugger all to do with the monetization of the game.

guessing he'll not appreciate statues like this either?

or the likes of velodromes getting named after chris hoy..

the statues are about celebrating sporting excellence, nothing more. Not like we're gonny erect tony mowbraw a statue now is it?

The Southampton geezer above is Ted Bates, who was a player, manager and president over a 66 year period til his death in 2003. Most of this period was the overblown game it is now and his service to the club is well deserving of a statue. Fortunately that embarrassing one was replaced in 2008 with one that doesn't look like a hobbit.

And started to wonder what the haterz are putting back into the community.

most clubs do lots of communiity work, after all thats where their support comes from, but the knockers only see the big stars and some tabloid behaviour from a few,the vast majority of clubs and footballers do unsung work in their locale.Even the team i support which is semi-pro-- plenty of community involvment from players etc-- tis all good !

You know what, it took 60 yrs to get a statue to bomber command, and there are still loads of deserving wartime participants with no monument to their sacrifice, yet some bod, obnoxious for the most part, paid God knows what gets his memory perpetuated, for what? What do you need a statue to him for, you can still see him most saturdays or whenever it is the wendyboys get their overpaid arses down to the ground for a bit of a kick about?
