On the news they told a tale of a man crossing the channel.
His asylum claim for Germany was refused so he was now trying the UK.
As his claim in Germany was refused did that apply to the rest of the eu?
Is that why there's been a huge increase in people crossing? Does our non eu status mean they now get a second roll of the dice?
His claim elsewhere in the EU may well have been inadmissible under the Dublin 3 arrangements, which the UK left at when the transition period ended 31/01/21. So the UK no longer has the ability to return asylum seekers to EU member states where they have previously been registered. Important to note that not all those crossing the channel would have been eligible for return under Dublin 3 because they may not have been encountered/fingerprinted in another EU member state. Also, I seem to remember the UK received more than it removed in the last year of the arrangements, due to the family reunion element.

"Is that why there’s been a huge increase in people crossing? "
The increase in people crossing is because Brexit made other routes harder - we're still annually taking barely half our record amount of asylum seekers (over 80k in 2001 or so), contrary to the rhetoric from the scum in charge.
