Might need to get from Loughborough to Dorchester in Dorset this Sat - potentially driving a van back if trip goes well.

Longish drive and big ask to get someone to come with me to then turn around and head back - best part of 4 hrs each way and 200 miles each way - big time commitment hence reluctant to ask friends. Wife would but don't want her doing all that driving. Train takes 6 hours and costs £80 for a single! No flights from East Mids airport to either Bournemouth or Southampton either. Google maps suggest it can be walked in 2 days but I don't think that's really a viable option either 😉

So, creative minds of STW, what, short of thumbing a lift are my other options?

Try trainsplitting for cheaper fares. an advance would have been cheap too.

I've tended to buy returns in that circumstance, if the van is worth the trip then the fare has to be judged as worth the cost as part of the purchase.

Might tire her out for all those jobs around the house eh? 😉

Go on Friday  night with your wife, stay over for a couple of nights at the seaside, drive home in different vehicles on Sunday.

It's not even 200 miles on a bike, do you have a road bike? 😀

Surely borrow a trade plate and stand in a dangerous place with a thumb out and you'll be on the move in a few minutes?

Alternatively, my dad had a van hire buisness. He or sometimes myself would drop of or pick up vans with a motorcycle. This doesn't help if you haven't a bike liscense or a bike 🤔

National hire car company and get the seller to pick you up where you drop the hire car? 400 miles is quite a lot in a day but not the end of the world.

I've tended to get one way train tickets / flights in the past but they weren't quite 6 hours.. As above if you're going to keep the vehicle long term £80 is nowt if it's the right van. Just make sure you're absolutely crystal clear with the seller on the phone about how far you're coming and if something isn't as described there will be holy hell to pay!
