Travelling from East Mids to Cumbria up M1 Fri - usual route cuts across A66 (Scotch Corner).
Happy to dive off motorway and cut across country to go somewhere nice.
Somewhere nice for early afternoon lunch sounds like a good idea...any suggestions?

Richmond is nice, and not far out of your way.

Richmond, Thirsk, Boroughbridge, Knaresborough (although the last two are getting a bit out of your way).

Edit: Or Masham or Northallerton

Edit to edit: Or head into the Dales and go to somewhere like Askrigg or Bainbridge.

Somewhere about half way would be great...thought of Tan Hill Inn but very close to destination...

From Richmond you can carry on through Swaledale. Lovely. Punch Bowl in Feetham, Farmer's Arms in Muker, Keld Lodge in Keld all good for food.

Unless Tan Hill has changed recently, it's rubbish for food.

Could go to the Black Sheep brewery in Masham

Or you could head off the M1 and towards Ilkley, then drive straight through the Dales - and just pick a likely looking stop somewhere along the way....

If turning off at Richmond, surely popping into the Dales Bike Centre near Reeth has to be an option? Especially as Friday is the best cake day...

Oh - and if going up the A65, remember it is the law to stop for bacon sarnie at Devil's Bridge.

Jefferson's Grocer/Deli/Cafe is Richmond town square is a great lunch stop. It's only a small detour away from the A66

Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Mebbe a bit early in the journey, but there are plenty of other suggestions ^^^ for further breaking up the trip.

This, and cut the corner off and go Ripon > Masham > Leyburn > Reeth > Tan Hill > A66?

Thanks for the suggestions folks...think we'll just meander up through the Dales and stop when we see a nice looking pub...though I have checked out some of the recommendations here. Been through Wensleydale before but not Swaledale so will prob do that.

I still miss the otter trust sanctuary just off the A66, near Gods Bridge and the PW

Was a lovely place to stop for a break, really lovely.
