Yes yes yes, I could make the effort myself and use the Googlesphere to find out the answer but I hope to get some personal insights into this.

Here's what's happening:
Flight arrives JFK at 22:30
Airport Hotel booked already for a bit of a kip
Flight departs JFK at 17:30

Obviously there's a yawning gap there! I fancy getting an early breakfast, using the subway, and doing something in the city. It would seem a shame to miss the opportunity.

Any ideas folks, anyone done similar?

I'd rather visit just one or two things and then head back to the hotel, get bags, and be at the airport earlyish. I'm not the sort who can handle tight schedules.

Book one of the circle line boat tours.Takes about 2 hours. Pretty cheap and fairly educational/interesting.

Yeah, I think just...Be in New York.
Go into the city and stroll and take in your surroundings. It's mental.

Spend as little time at the airport as possible- get onto the city
Id get the subway to Brooklyn, then walk over the bridge. I'd have breakfast in Manhattan, then up the Rockefeller centre. And take it from there! Rather than bus, train, boat I'd recommend walking, you'll love it.
Traffic is awful, you'll be less likely to miss your flight if you get the train back to the airport.

Sound like good plans. I'm hoping to dodge being dragged around to things I'm not interested in by the drunkard reprobates I'm travelling with.. You get the message.

Soak it in, just wander round, maybe Greenwich/Chinatown area, take subway to/from airport, it's part of the 'experience'

Breakfast down at Clintonstreet Bakery or Pastrami in Katz Deli (Reuben Sandwich = superb)

Walk over Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn side to Manhattan, short walk to WorldTrade. Or Pick up the water taxi that goes around the Statue of Liberty and drops you off right by the start of the Highline walk, good pizza at Artichokes about halfway along the route!

Pick up a hire bike and do the 6mile loop of CentralPark, Walk down Fifth Avenue. Easy to pop into Rockefeller or Empire State if you want a rooftop view.

If you already have a subway day pass get it back to the airport! Much, much cheaper than a taxi!!

Really fancy the Brooklyn Bridge/Lower Manhattan plan. Shame I won't have a decent camera with me. 🙁

All good suggestions above

If it were me - Straight to staten island ferry - across and back for free and see the skyline

then walk up broadway to the corner of central park - should take around 2 hours plus stops, plenty to see

+1 for Staten Island ferry.
Just get talking to a local on there and the tour-guide bit is thrown in for free by a real New Yorker.
Last time I was in NYC I was skint so lived off the $1 hot dogs from street carts. Go to one with a queue of locals so you know you won't be poisoned.

For walking across, I prefer Williamsburg bridge to Brooklyn Bridge plus it takes you to the Brooklyn Brewery, a vintage clothes shoperama and cool hipster Williamsburg. Grab cheap jeans at Dave's (Av of Americas). I like breakfast in an Amy's Bakery. Bleecker Street has Amy's, Fish and the Blind Tiger (all major attractions for me) and I think Greenwich Village is more interesting than Times Square. Taxis are cheap, the subway is fun and I never bother with queueing up and paying to go up a high building. My mate lives on the 22nd floor of a block in 42nd, I get a view from there.
If you keep moving, you can pack in a lot during the time you have available.

No decent camera you say? How about a trip to B&H cameras?

Not had the pleasure of visiting the store but I'm sure you could kill a couple of hours there!

Much as I would love to get all spendy on another camera, the financial controller at home might not appreciate another one cluttering up the place.

Kind of on a budget for fixing up the house at the mo... every penny counts.

That's a great photo!

Walked a long way

Best way to see a city! On foot or on bike, that slower pace lets you really explore and soak it all up. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
