Any recommendations to kill a couple of hours? Mrs W is running the race to the king ultra today (Goodwood to Winchester) so I’m going to QECP/ the surrounding for a ride and possibly a short run.

Will then have a few hours in Winchester while I wait for her to finish about 5pm. Any decent cafes/bike shops etc that are worth a visit? Never been to the town before.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

There's a nice walk along the river, and a few decent cafes and pubs near the cathedral. Dunno about bike shops.

We spent a couple of days in Winchester, I liked it.

I end up killing time in Winchester occasionally.

It's a nice place, quite a large amount of it though is dominated by traffic.

But there's then nicer areas by cathedral and River. Some lovely walks past cathedral and Old Bishops castle, along Itchen (Keal's? Walk) and then back in via Kingsgate.

Last time I was there it was noticeable how many local shops had been replaced by the national, middle class chains.

The pedestrian area and down by King Alfred statue has a couple of quieter pub or cafe gardens to sit out in.

Amazing Waffles and coffee at the Orangery just by the Cathedral green

The Cathedral itself is fascinating if you haven’t been - wander round for an hour and you realise just how many people from England’s history lived and/or died in Winchester.

Or for a beer and the footy the Mucky Duck on Hyde Street

No bike shops (Hargreaves is out of town now) although there is a place called Bespoke (opposite the Brooks shopping centre) which is a weird combination of cafe, bike repair shop, second hand bike shop and arts and crafts store.

Or you could wander along the river to the Handlebar Cafe, grab a coffee and walk up St Catherine’s hill for amazing views.

Not a very nice day here at the moment but it’s dry at least.

Walked in from the park and ride down the river. Managed to get a table outside the Orangery with a semi decent busker and a view to people watch.

Town seems to be heaving- although it might be my village-view for the last 18 months skewing my sense of “busy”.

Thanks for the recommendations!
