My preferred answer is for someone to recommend a cheap smart watch that will countdown x minutes for walking then y minutes for running ,then repeat. Ideally with great big numbers as I won’t be wearing my glasses .
I want to be able to increase the running time as I get better.
Due to being absolutely knackered I lose track of when I should be running or walking.
Failing that is there an app that will say “run “ over the top of my music then “walk” at a designated time?
I’m on android .
I have an app called... Interval Timer.
I had an app called Impetus that you could set up with interval sessions, and it had some standard ones too. It beeps rather than talks to tell you to change, but was pretty good.
My old Timex watch does intervals, beeps so you don't need to look at it.
Couch to 5K app pretty much covers the 2nd option. As the name suggests it tapers up from a low starting point, but you can skip the early weeks if desired.
The Interval Timer app is perfect.
What cheapo watch would that work on?
Basic Timex ironman watch has this
A decent Garmin will do it. You can pick up an older model pretty cheaply now. £40 for a fenix 3 or £80 for a 5. Some models will do your music too so you don't need to take your phone out. Much better battery life than most smart watches and the tracking stuff is actually very good, as is the pace information. In fact having the pace info goes really well with intervals
As someone else said, a Couch to 5k android app will give you audio cues to run/walk and let you play music in the background - I used a free (with ads) one a few years ago that got me back into running : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.c25k&hl=en&gl=US
If you want to use a watch, then Garmin have "Garmin Coach" interval training plans. These are more dynamic compared to the C25K plans, so adapt to keep your progress on track. The watch buzzes and displays text, and some models (maybe just the "music" watch versions??) will give voice prompts through bluetooth headphones. Cheapest compatible watch looks like the Forerunner 45 - about £95 I think : https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=IkvWNeIoSd48GIYCjkhlo7&productID=73207&tab=topics
