I know HR people are supposed to keep some thing confidential if you ask them to. Prospective new employer wants a reference before inviting people to the first interview. Only polite to mention to the HR manager that they may be asked for one. Can I ask them to keep this secret from everyone else? (especially my line manager who is the last person I want to find out. It's a very small company, 120ish at that office so once one person knows everyone knows)
.
Also, if I had a written warning for something back in February 2013 and was told that it would be on my record for 6 months is this likely to get mentioned in the reference? Can it? How would I know if it is, would I ever see my reference?
,
Cheers guys and girls
surely HR will need to ask your line manager to do the reference?
Bugger
Will they give me a glowing reference to increase the chances of getting rid of me I wonder...
Unlikely, but you never know
At this point the reference will be dates only and should be handled by HR in complete confidence. Your offer/contract may/will be dependent on full references thereafter.
Seems pointless given the guidance about giving (or not giving) references these days.
They won't need to ask your manager but they have no reason not to tell them, and lots of reasons to tell them. Only chance is if they are friendly (possible) or bad at their job (likely 🙂 ). I'd see if the new employer would take a reference from someone else.

....and in all likelihood, therein lies your answer I'm afraid.
I'm happy to give them my previous employer as a reference (left at the end of 2007) but it's a strange environment where I am now, I hardly trust anyone (one of many reasons why I want out!)
My previous manager now works for a sister company, he's an option, is totally incorruptable, which is good as far as the reference goes but not so good in terms of not giving manager info they would quite like to know

Silly idea to ask current employer for a reference prior to an interview. I would tell them reference only provided on conditional job offer, if they are not open to that then god knows what they would be like to work for.
I would explain that you cannot provide a work reference without a job offer as the fact you are looking elsewhere will not be looked on well by your current employer.
Say who they can contact for a reference and see if they accept
if they insist on your employer then you have to decide
Surprised they are asking tbh
Yep, I've never given out any referencing details until after interview, and usually just as a formality after the offer has been made - ie. the offer is conditional on references.
Them talking to my current employer before even inviting me in for a chat, and long before deciding I'm who they want for the job? GTFO.
Politely decline, and if they press then it's really not the sort of place you want to work for.
