My daughter has got her firdt house and wants a BT spealer so she can play music in the lounge from her phone.
She would like something that can produce quite a lot of sound, and is aware of the limitations of BT transmission rather than streaming.
If she could connect her tv to it that may be a benefit, and she is quite happy if it is plug in only.
Does anyone habe any recommendations? She jas a budget of £200 max, but would be happy to spend less.
Thanks
Ian
I’d look at Anker for the cheaper end and Bose for the more expensive.
We have both and they have lasted years. The Bose is better of course.
You can get 2 Anker ones and set up a stereo pair as well.
Usual "recommend what you have", but I'm very happy with a pair of Anker Soundcore speakers.
They pair together for good stereo, and are rechargeable/portable.
Well within budget for the pair, too!

Recommend what you have:
I just bought a soundcore (Anker) motion boom plus in a sale. It sounds good and is very, very loud. I think I only ever switch it up to 10%.
Looks are a bit bland but it's also very inoffensive.
Needs to be positioned with a good bit of room around it or else it sounds a bit boomy
Has an aux in.
Snap x3
Knowing how loud 1 motion boom plus is, a stereo pair would be immense
"Alexa, recommend me a Bluetooth speaker."
£200 would net an Echo Studio, though at that price point I'd be investigating some sort of small Hi-Fi solution or a decent soundbar for the telly.
https://www.richersounds.com/yamaha-sr-c30a-black.html
... for instance. If I had £200 lying around I'd be buying that myself.
Another vote for the Anker Soundcore. I got one after a PSA on here and use it every day.
I bought an Echo studio that arrived filled with computer/mould mites. So far it's been used briefly till I realised and since stuck in the outside room with a sealed bag around it and moth balls in there to try and eradicate them. So I don't recommend what I own, it sucks, might sounds amazing though, but who knows.
I'd get the best AudioPro device within my budget - they have amazing sound quality. They're not the loudest but they are excellent.
oh look a sale:
We have a JBL charge 4 👍
Yeah, assuming she'll have a telly in there too, kill two birds with one stone and get a soundbar.
A pair of Audioengine A2+ will outperform Bluetooth speakers and easily connect to a tv
I have and anker soundcore 2 for taking out as a portable with 24 hours battery life off a single charge - my teenage daughter uses that in her room when it's not out and about. I have a soundcore motion boom which is less likely to come on a camping trip but is loud and bass-ey.
The boom is less than a year old, the 2 is maybe 6 years old, no issues with either and you could probably get the pair and have £100 change from your budget
£50 (30 over with current promo code on the speakers) over budget but can use it with the TV too.

And

Has a subwoofer pre out too if she wants to beef it up in future.
She hasn’t mentioned portable?
If there is a tv in the room and you don’t need portable then sound bar sounds like as no brainier. Ours is an amazing Bluetooth speaker
Or a pair of active speakers round the telly. You’d get some good ones from Edifier with blue tooth for that money
Or a pair of wi fi Sonos compatible speakers. IKEA would do a pair for that money. Assuming hew source is source is Spotify that would be less faff than blue tooth. Or a single Sonos. But I’d rather have stereo
https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/sonos-ikea-symfonisk-bookshelf-speaker
A single speaker with a built in lithium battery might be a waste of money here
Minirig ?
www.minirigs.co.uk
Another vote for a pair of Edifier speakers. Better than a sound bar and pump out the music pretty well for their size. I have mine connected to the TV (optical), Alexa (Aux) for music, and also stream from phone or tablets over bluetooth.
Edit: when I got mine, R1850DB I think, cpc.farnell.com had the best pricing on Edifier. Also check amazon.com
UE speakers are good if you want something bomb proof
JBL Charge 5
Minirig +1
I'm not sure why anyone would want an mini/portable up-firing battery powered speaker system in the house.
It will sound like total arse and what do you do after 2 years when the battery is fubar?
I'd suggest, if she's got her own place, and actualy values decent quality audio, is start buildng a base for a decent hifi system, with a small class D amp inc. wifi/BT & bookshelf speakers. Much more versitile with connectivity options.
At a push maybe something the Edifiers mentioned above but as the amp is built into one of the speakers they are kind of limited.
Edifier R1700 if she doesn't mind about portability. Really lovely sound quality.
I have a JBL Charge 4 also, which is surprisingly good.
I got the Anker Spoundcore after a PSA on here.
It's pretty good, but not as good as the JBL Flip I had before. Sound is more muddy and bass-y, less defined.
So I'd recommend the Flip for a smaller option, and I'd look at JBL's bigger options as well at that budget.
Anker Soundcore, I've got 2 that are on pretty much constantly with me working from home. They just work, sound is fine, battery is good, no issues at all.
When I needed a new bluetooth speaker for the kitchen I bought a cheap soundbar.
One of these https://www.majority.co.uk/soundbars/snowdon/
Works really well, fits neatly across my wall shelf brackets, connects quickly every time.
I only use it for radio and podcasts, if it was for music I would probably of spent a bit more.
Why not go for a Soundbar with Bluetooth built in. I have a JBL I think about £110 ages ago from Richer sounds. Optic connection to TV and bluetooth.
I would say dont get an Anker Soundcore
My parents have one and I have a Soundcore Boost. The difference in bass and sound quality is massive.
Of course at the top end you have stuff like the Naim Muso or MUSO QB. We have a Muso and the sound is beautiful
Second hand Ruark MR1 would be within budget, can connect to tv via either optical or aux and has bluetooth. Very small and pretty for speakers - if that matters. Not very portable though
Over budget, but how about a sonos ray at 250 quid (on amazon).
Can be used as a tv soundbar, would stream directly but controlled by phone, and could be expanded in a year or two if budget allows to add wireless surounds.
JBL Flip 6... well that's what the outlaws just bought my partner, and her father is a complete audiophile, so it's not going to be bad... (seems fine to my tonedeaf ears)
Minirig +2 I’ve not heard anything better, plus satisfaction of supporting a UK manufacturer
Personally, I think @Mattyfez observations are worth noting. I really would avoid the cheap bluetooth speaker options and either consider a reasonable sound bar that can support a sub woofer or a decent powered speaker option such as the Edifiers. I think some of them also support the addition of a sub so that when budget allows you can add to the quality of the tv watching experience.
Mrs BC has an Audio Pro portable speaker which she uses for listening in the bedroom and that we take away on holidays. Sound quality is very good although when you first listen to them they can sound quite bassy. For my home office I have the Edifier R1700BT which I find to be really very good for the money. It's not the last word in audiophile quality but I still reckon it will blow any of the "cheaper" options such as Ankar. Both the Audio Pro and the Edifier support Bluetooth.
As another option (but more expensive) is to look at the offerings from companies such as Adam Audio for powered speakers. Not sure of their cheaper speakers do Bluetooth but you can always add a Bluetooth receiver or go higher quality with something like the Ifi Zen Blue which will give you Bluetooth and a reasonable DAC.
All of these are cheaper and more discrete than going for a full on AV amplifier / receiver which is possibly overkill for what the OP is looking for. But they will give you decent sound quality for both audio playback and a huge improvement for the tv.
I've got an Anker Motion Boom original (non-plus) which sounds great after a simple EQ tweak in the app, and also a Tribit Maxsound Plus for the kitchen which is less bassy but sounds more balanced. Very happy with both considering the price. Obviously not as good as my two proper hi fi setups but still amazing considering the price/portability factor.
Same answer I always give. AudioPro can’t be beaten on sound per pound. Replaces my Sonos stuff with them years ago and they do a fantastic range. Brexit has made it a tad more difficult to bag a bargain though.
That or treat her to the KEF speakers in the Classifieds.
As said if portability isn't actually needed then a paid of powered or active speakers (or a sound bar but they are also a compromise for stereo audio) will get better quality at the same price.
If portability is required then an AudioPro or Minirig are a big step up from the equivalent size Anker, UE etc (and more expensive).
I've a 5yr+ old minirig and the battery still keeps going and going. It's amazingly capable for the size.
Not recommending them as a solution for the requested scenario, as pointed out why go for the limitations of a portable system for a ‘permanent setup’.
but…. In the 80’s, 90’s and early 00’s I spent a lot of time and money trying to get a decent HiFi system together. Last night I borrowed my daughters Soundcore 2 and paired it as a stereo pair with mine. The quality of the sound for £80, AND it’s wireless AND portable blows my mind.
JBL Charge is good, half decent bass and a long battery life.
Two Soundcore Booms, son has the Boom Plus, and we have a Soundcore2 at the caravan
Meanwhile breninbeener has left the chat……………..
Hi all, thanks for the suggestions. She has now moved the goalposts a little. She has bought a pr of Anker soundcores for upstairs as a stereo pair
She has now taken my wharfedale diamonds and a lovely little NAD amp. However she wants to stream spotify to this. Now we have a Yamaha musicast running through a lovely old school Cyrus pre and power amp here. It streams music but is controlled by BT phone app.
So, whats the best way to stream spotify or BBC sounds/dab to it? Is is a newer amp with DAB on it and a chromecast audio widget? She is now prepared tonspend some more money, but would appreciate using my old 3030 amp.
I came on to say if she’s cool enough, get one of those new mini class d amps with Bluetooth and a pair of vintage speakers to suit her style - but she’s gone one better herself so awesome!
Streaming wise, Sonos hifi thing here but it’s spendy as duck for what it is. Cheap audio man on YouTube is raving about Wii’s pro which looks like the ideal way to get modern functionality on old kit

Serving hand Chromecast audio?
Or the Amazon equivalent? Seems they do something called the Echo Flex now which can connect to external speaker via 3.5mm jack. That might do the job (also supports Bluetooth) for a very low price.
If she's an Apple fan than it looks like a used Airport Express is about £30 on eBay. They will allow you to stream audio from any app on your phone/ipad/mac to it via Airplay (WiFi). The Airport Express has a funky 3.5 mm jack that also does optical out if the NAD amp has optical in.
2nd hand Chromecast audio is decent.
Wiim mini is better (has a digital eq which was a world apart from the MusicCast streamer I was using before). BUT if there is any desire to use more than 1 device synched and streaming the BBC sounds app. They only allow this via Chromecast so.
Wiim Pro, have 3, they are probably more expensive than a small box of tech needs to be, but I am now connecting to a speaker group via Chromecast and once again have a house full of music, may eventually replace the Chromecast I have in the bedroom with one as well as the timing is just out.
