Madame's faithful old phone needs some repairs and a new battery. Perhaps time to buy a 5G as it's being rolled out around here.
You lot are to blame for my Moto G 5S which has done everything I've asked of it so I'm asking again. Ta.
She's now found a battery for 25e, a charging dock for 25e and the tool kit to change it for 20e. All plus post. I should make the effort to fix it. Suggestions still welcome though.
If you forget about 5G you can open a lot more options up at that price. 5G would be lower on my list of priorities than say, a decent amount of RAM and storage to futureproof the handset.
Mi10t lite. Good value, 5g.
got a Samsung A42 5G 3 months ago I'm in Aus' but UK price at 320 more or less on budget good camera features - fast processor - decent memory but if want dual sim then no card as card goes in 2nd sim space- decent battery life so far - other than on off button being where the volume down button was on my last samsung very happy not got a 5G contract yet waiting for a special offer
I was looking at new phones last night & the new Samsung A52 looks like a good option at €329 or see if you can get a deal on the A72 (available soon)
I wouldn't touch Samsung (bloatware) or Huawai (no access to Google's infrastructure on modern handsets). I've just got a Samsung A12 as a replacement work phone and the hardware is excellent but the UI is annoying as shit.
I'd be starting here: https://www.android.com/intl/en_uk/one/
Poco f3 on its way to me. Amazon have them or at least will do shortly. Have a look at hot UK deals for other ideas.
Edit: have been running a Poco F1 for a few years and it's been superb.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. They've led to reviews and Youtubes and kept her busy. In the Samsung review (thanks, antigee) on lesnumériques.com the guy kept referencing the Realme X50 5G VERT 128Go as the reference in mid-range smartphones. We can get one for 250e. The other one that she's taken by is the oneplus nord (ta, petec) which fulfills her wish for a better video camera for 369e on the manufacturer's official site. Thoughts on the Realme anyone?
Techspurt does some good review - decent info without going over the top & pretty down to earth:
What is it shes going to be using the 5g for?
I've always found 4g plenty fast enough for web browsing and FaceTime etc
What is it shes going to be using the 5g for?
I have to agree with this
I have a 5G Nord, as mentioned. I live in the country (ish), but near to Reading and Newbury (both places with 5G). In the last year, I've been to either maybe 5 times. And has the 5G made a difference? No - not noticed. You can hit 250 Mbps on a decent 4G+ connection.
it's got to the stage I've turned the 5G off to save power. Does it make a difference? No idea, but the oneplus forum's said it's not a bad move.
Why 5G? Because:
She's got a 5G contract wherever there's a 5G network, we always get upgraded fast as we live near the town centre - there's already 5G 500m from here.
She uses her phone as a server for her PC and streams stuff.
She keeps her phones a long time. The current one is 5 years old. Forward compatibilty seems a good idea, would you want a 3G phone now?
Realme is leading so far
Oneplus Nord a maybe but it's nearly Nokia money
Samsung has much better battery life than any of the others which is nice for cyclecamping
Nokia 8.3 has the best camera
Poko f3, Huawei and Xiaomi don't seem quite as good VFM as above.
She's doing some work now having reached saturation on phones.
Thanks for the help so far.
Out of that lot,
Future proofing is the only relevant comment in that first paragraph.
Battery life, meh, external power packs are cheap.
Do you really need 5g speeds though? You can get a very good 4g phone for £300 - £350.
Whilst I like the fact technology is moving on, I wouldn't pay any sort of premium for 5g,i just don't require that sort of speed when 4g is plenty fast enough to stream music or videos.
Deed done, she's read all the comments, followed all the links you've posted and bought the Realme X50 5G for 245e which is just over £200. Less than she'd set out to spend and all the boxes ticked. This thread definitely speeded the process and in a round about way led to what she's decided on, so thanks to all for contributing.
The wish to future proof comes from previous experience. I wanted to charge the car in Spain so downloaded the app for the charge point, but it was incompatible with the version of Android on my Samsung which was under three years old. So I tried to upgrade Android but my phone wasn't compatible with the upgrade. Happily Madame's phone had the right Android even though it was only a few months newer.
Looks like my opinion is too late for now, but the Moto G 5G Plus is excellent. Cracking camera, big battery, good screen and nothing left out of the spec list, also around £200. (I do wish it was smaller though, but the small phone battle is largely lost)
As for 4G vs 5G, set your cantis up right and you have no need for V brakes etc. I never bother looking for a wifi signal anywhere these days as 5G will be faster and more reliable, no faff of logging in or handing your details to random building owners.
Moto G 5G Plus is excellent. Cracking camera,
Have the fixed the generally slow cameras that Moto G's have? I'm on my 3rd Moto G phone (1, then 3, now 6) and every one has had a slow camera. Normally the moment has passed before I starts to try and focus. I didn't realise quite how bad it was until is used my wife's Huawaie (?) P Smart thingy that was cheaper but so much faster.

One thing Apple is very good at, you get 5 years for a phone before they stop doing OS upgrades and its still usable for a few more years after that.
Camera on the Moto G 5G+ isn't laggy. If you want a different camera app, GCam is available for it (and others), which is the same processing engine as the Pixel cameras with the very good night mode.
