Mr Spoilt bastard here - difficult to choose so had/have both although I did wash cars for about a decade to get 8860.

Lego Movie temporarily the best thing in the world ever when the space dude with the broken helmet made a mega-928. So I got to buy that for the kids.

And then I got the GT3 RS when Argos were giving them away a few weeks back.

I have 8860 still, although my favourite was the earlier blue Apollo lunar module with those strange larger Lego figures

Too poor for 8860, it was 854 here. I say was but its still built and on a shelf about 20' away from me know.

I had one of these:

Mobile Rocket Transport - LEGO set #6950-1

The arm with the rocket was a bit weak and would often fall apart and drop the rocket. Had loads of moon floor sections too including a rocket launch pad.

How old does this look now?

I had both too. My mum kept lots of my old childhood toys, including all the Lego.

My 2 young boys both love playing space Lego when they go round Grandma's.

In a year or 2 they'll ready for the Technic Lego. Beats playing Fortnite!

I had an 851 Massey Ferguson tractor, and then a fantastic old style Unimog thing, 8848, which happened also to be the then accepted height of Everest, which I was also somewhat obsessed with. Both had things like working drive shafts for accessories, steering, tipping etc. All very clever.

Lego MF Tractor

Lego 8848 old Unimog

I think I still have all the bits from both, in a plastic box, and the instructions for the Unimog. I will be having a look in the loft!

I see they do a new all singing and dancing Unimog for a few hundred quid...

I have 8860 in the garage, will be a pressie for my son within the next year or so.  I've already bought quite a few classic sets on ebay for him, so I can re-live my youth 🙂

Got him 6971 last Christmas...

I had 6970, the space base. It was pretty sweet but it was no 928.

My brother had the technic car, it was kinda awesome but it didn't really do anything, kind of like the AT-AT- amazing on christmas day but later on you wish you had an x wing

I did want a 8860, the £30 or so it cost must have been too much at the time, or there were other things I wanted more. I made my own coil springs tho and used torsion bars for the cars I made.

Loved it! - but I don't get the new stuff, it can't be nearly as versatile, mosty rebooting/nostalgia?

6980 for me. That was a good birthday. Though I remember it as Starship Explorer.

I had 6890, that was ace! Didn't a flap lift up and the front became a separate ship and the rear a moon-base?

I had 928 too, and the base sheets with the various moulded craters and landing pad.

Taking me back this, like it!

I had the 928 (from my Grandma) and the 6890 (from my Nana) on the same Christmas, what a day 🙂

I had the rocket launcher too, I think.

Between myself and 'r kid we had the lineup and the 920 base, plus some of the more modest grey vehicles and ships like the humble 886 Moon Buggy. It's all still at my parents and the kids love the cratered base plates. Despite claiming to be a spoilt git I never had 6980 but my mate did and I was proper jealous. Must've been on a pudding ban or something.

Yeah - the front bit came off, then the middle bit was like a frame and the back bit was like a science module thingy. I think the back bit opened up too?

365 – the 1st Lego set I remember getting

ahh back in the good old days when lego figures were armless, faceless, genderless entities. When all you needed to have a role in life was a hat.

This is bringing back memories; I've been re-building some of my old Lego with my son at home.  I was spoilt, being the youngest and only grandson in the family.  I got the 928 as my big present one Christmas and remember it being a highlight.  I also had the 918, 924 spaceships so had the complete fleet of ships of that era to play with.  My dad bought me the 854 go kart when he got a promotion when I was about 6, so I remember building that with him, but I got the 8860 much later.

I also had a Lego Master builders badge back in the day and was a member of the Lego Club - I was proper Lego geek.

As to the best of 928 vs 8860, the 8860 is better challenge to build but the 928 was the basis for a number of space battles and adventures as a child (the 8860 just looks good) so I'd go for that.

The 6824 space dart is still my favourite from that era.

Great memories.

Both, of course, silly.

Think I had just about every model pictured here... That was birthdays and xmas for many years.

Nem Jnr got the 929 - that's pretty awesome too.

For me it's 8865 (which I had and was awesome) or 8880 (which I didn't have, but objectively was probably better).

I had that one! With the arms and legs with joints in them.

Anway; to the OP questiont, 8860 clearly.

Edit: my mistake, seems the legs didn't have joints. Memory fail there, although to be fair it was something around 1978 I last built it...

Great memories.

I  had that too. The blue astronaut was my favourite.

I always thought the rocket launcher looked a bit russian so always associated the yellow astronauts with being russian (and rubbish looking) and therefore the baddies in my space battles.

I had 8860 as a kid and it was pretty cool (especially the gearbox and suspension), but Lego Space was my first love and my lack of a 928 was a hole in my soul that lasted for many years... until I got one off eBay a few years ago. It sits (on its landing pad) on a shelf in my living room and was more recently joined by Benny's Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP!!!

The original Lego Technic car was a work of art.
