A) the June 21st date was given months ago as a potential opening up date

B) what have you been doing all this time?

C) no-one's making you open on the 21st

Ordering stock, recruiting and training staff, preparing the premises and making sure you can follow any guidelines.

7 days doesn’t seem enough as some of those you’d not want to commit to beforehand.

Look at it the other way round - if they don’t get the green light on 14th who takes the hit on staff, stock, etc?

Government seem scared to put the brakes on - and bizzarely keen to have a national approach. If I was running a nightclub in Bolton I’d not be expecting to open, in some other areas it might be viable, but with what rules? Eg do they need to records contact details, check some sort of vaccine status, insist on masks - if that detail is not confirmed till 7 days before it’s not long to train the staff you don’t yet have, get signage made etc. Determine if any limit on numbers is viable... do you need screens (no point spending money on things when you are forced to be completely closed) etc...

Having seen how this works in other sectors everything is kept secret (or is undecided) until the announcement and then it often takes a couple of days to see the legislation to clarify what it means, and sometimes several days after that to iron out conflicts between the agreed guidance and the legislation.

No reason not to publish what the rules will be when the first night clubs open. Those must have been discussed.

Suspect it is an easy line to start feeding to cover the 'short period of time' once things are actually confirmed. Business will be wanting to play it safe by not spending money on things that might end up not progressing...so they might be thinking hey won't do anything until confirmation...rather than seeing what can be done with little expense but help get things prepared - I'm guessing the clubs will need a clean and freshen up, at a complete guess based on no idea of what that involves, it might include a cleaning team to get in and sort that...suspect everything is digital now so perhaps need to get music libraries updated; drinks will need restocked - bottled stuff shouldn't be an issue but suspect beers in kegs might be a bit more problematic as they will go off, so they don't want to stock up and then find out the opening is delayed as that will mean stock is spoiled.Staff and advertising also need factored in - expensive to then cancel if things don't go ahead as planned.

At the same time, there must be stuff that can be done that will help things get things prepped that aren't as time sensitive...

All based on absolutely no idea of what goes in to running a nightclub.

Bit of a daft post. If it was your business, how much capital would you commit to opening with a tenuous opening date? You say they don’t have to open; most venues are on the verge of collapse and don’t have a great deal of choice - limited support available from landlords and banks in the event the venue is able to open.

Why the "apparently"? It's clearly not long enough for a go/no-go decision for a business like that, IMO.

They need to hold out for seven days and one week...

My theory is that our PM is just like the OP, thinks everything can be done based on a late last minute decision… and if he’s wrong… will that’s someone else’s problem.
