...genuinely asking for a friend. Well one of my groundworkers, dual carriageway that turns in to a 70 coming out of jnc26 of the m1. He's panicking as he's only 21. Verdict?

A friend got three points and the usual fine (south of £100) for 73 in a 50, though that was before the last round of increases in penalties. It was a dual carriageway, too.

He might get off but only if he uses some cunning linguistics

His age may mean he may face a resit too.

Camera or copper?

I think the old £100 and 3 points FPN has gone, he’s in band B so 100% or weekly wage and 4 points, or a 28 day ban.

Would suggest 4-6 points or <28days disqualification + 100% of weekly income, another Google would suggest its now 150% of weekly income.

I nearly collected a car in the boot yesterday when one of the gantry signs with a camera flicked on to show 50 when I was nearly underneath it. Would be nice if they showed a countdown or something.

God, hasn't it changed? Hopefully for the better and now more of a deterrent.

I got caught doing 93 in a 60 when I was 20 and got off very lightly (SP60) but because I'd only just passed my test I spent the next 18 months driving very slowly so that my points didn't get to six (which would have resulted in a re-sit back then).

@Flaperon, you don't need to hammer the anchors on for that on!! Just slow down, of course the car behind was paying attention and a sensible distance back.

55 in a 30, on the back wheel, overtaking, near a school. I suspect I'm worse than Hitler, although I am no longer a ****less youth.

I got caught at 67 in a 50 -braking hard when I saw the speed trap .
I was in my van and got offered a speed awareness course- I felt very lucky not to go straight to points and fine .

On a slightly different note, I flash-flashed a middle lane hogger on t'motorway the other, causing him to drop the anchors in a spectacular way - hadn't thought in advance but we were passing a smart gantry and I rather wonder if he thought gatso had got him.

Well - it made I chuckle.

4 points, large fine and a retest.

I nearly collected a car in the boot yesterday when one of the gantry signs with a camera flicked on to show 50 when I was nearly underneath it. Would be nice if they showed a countdown or something.

There's a short grace period when they change, I forget exactly what it is now, maybe 30 seconds or something. You don't need to drop anchor, anyway.

I think the decision to prosecute depends on previous offending history behind the wheel.

There is also concern that if he passed his test less than 2 yrs ago he may get enough points to become a learner again.

This is where I don't understand the whole "guideline" thing. He just sent it off and asked for driver awareness. That was turned down but got away very luckily I think with 3 points and a 100 quid fine.

Lucky.

He was never going to get an awareness course that far over the limit.

I was 60something in a 50 on M4 (approaching tolls half a mile back), so that would be band B now. Was 5 years ago or so, and got speed awareness course or I think the lower of the points and fine if I didn't take it. I'd certainly expect worse now.
