Just a bog standard UPVC back door key.

Admittedly I have not had a key cut in a while, but is this the usual cost? Ouch.

Might be a bit bendy......Should've paid extra for a metal one.

Buys a complex shaped piece of metal for house. Pays £6. Is horrified at expense.

Buys a complex shaped piece of metal for bike. Pays £50. Bargain.

you could buy a blank key and cut it by hand with a file?!

Doesn't seem that expensive to me and normally most things do!

Is it a numbered key? You can often buy them online for less then the price of cutting. That said the price of keys is a bit messed up. £5 to get one cut, £3 to buy one online, £4 to buy a new lock with 3 keys

Do you have the facility and time to cut it yourself? If not, its a bargain.

Seems reasonable to me? Price of blank key, machine to cut key, man to operate machine, VAT/rates/rent other shop costs.

I'd say it's actually pretty cheap. Last year the ones I got done were a tenner each.

I've just got back from having some keys cut £5 each for front door but the window key is a special at £12.50!
It's not exactly something you need to but every day so even if they were £20 each is hardly the end of the world

I bought some last year which were about £2/£2.50 apart from one special one that only special old cobbler's had blanks for which was £4. So yeah. Sick squid sounds a bit much. Did you opt for a special colour with a rubber thing on it?

Ignore the hand-wringers asking "how much is your house worth to you without a key?". That's just ridiculous 🙂

Ignore the hand-wringers (etc)

I think in this case, the "hand wringers" are the ones moaning about the price of key 😆

🙂

If the OP lives in a one-horse town fair enough. But I live in a city and you can't open a cupboard without a locksmith falling out. Why pay £6 at the chain place when you can cross the roads and get 3 for a fiver? And maybe admire some awesome shoes while you're there.

Timpsons sense of responsibility is incredible. 10% of staff are ex convicts...

I think the key for my old and unglamorous car was something around £160. Yes it has electronics in it but that doesn't really change pain

Timpson are bloody ace. Great company.

I know there are quite a few West Yorkshire folk on here, but next time you need a key cutting go to B&S Locksmiths in Huddersfield. While they are cutting your key take a look around - an absolutely amazing place, and well worth £6 for the visit alone!

I've had a word with myself, and the best I can do is if they don't accept contactless for the £6 they deserve to go out of business like the lazy, grasping shysters they are.

Wait until you need to get a key cut for a Fiat car. I had to get one last year, a regular key cutter couldn't do it as it has to be programmed to the car. One specialist later I was the owner of a £100 car ignition key. 🙁

£6 sound like its probably about right, it's £6 more than I pay though as one of my mates works for various landlords/letting agents in the Leeds area and has all the kit to cut his own keys.

The bottom line podcast is a classic btw.
Its not just about employing ex offenders although that always gets the headlines. Really its about how the owner has decentralised the business, the sales data isnt linked, what happens in a store is left to the manager of that store.
Unheard of from a big chain when normally everything is analysed to the last customer cough.
At the time of the podcast it seemed to be working, hope it still is.

Try getting a barrel-type key for a bike lock cut for six quid! I just had a nice brass back-up front door key cut to keep in my wallet at Timpson's, and it was £6, IIRC. Seems reasonable to me.

If you've got a bog-standard Eurocylinder lock then replace it with something secure. A burglar will break the Eurocylinder and be in your house in under a minute, happened to me.

Incomer eh?
🙂

Sounds a bit pricey to me and I'm from Lancashire.

Three for a tenner in Asda.

Three for a tenner at Homebase too, using an automated machine. It takes a picture of the key, tells the operator what blank to load and away it goes.

For a bog standard yale type key, the shop in my local town charges £4. Got one done in the city where I work and it was £6.

Key cutting it seems, is like the price of a pint of beer, depends where you go! 😆

Only £2.50 here, from a bloke in a blue overall who will happily sell you fork handles and various sorts of plugs.

I agree with £6 seeming expensive.
I was given this quote for a similar Yale type key, so went to the local hardware shop who charged £2 for the same product. No issues with it not fitting the tumblers either - they put it onto a polishing wheel to remove any sharp edges.
Quality service still exists

No wonder half the country's broke and just voted to leave EU in protest! FFS... £6! Or do we not care about people struggling by on low incomes so long as we're ok...

Thank goodness there's businesses run like Timpsons - proving capitalism can be a force for social good at the same time as providing decently-paid jobs and creating wealth for the owners and shareholders.

The confounding thing about Timpsons is that the Chief Exec's brother is a Tory Minister - so luckily for us not all Tories are of the May and Osborne variety... just rather a lot of them, sadly

Well, if I was stupid enough to have voted out then I'd think that 52% of 70% was 'all the people' but as I'm not that stupid I accept your correction... 🙂 though of course the point still stands... the less we're willing to pay for UK-produced goods and services the faster the economy will go down the pan as the jobs go abroad and remaining workers get testy... as we're currently finding out...

There used to be an old boy operating out of the back of an old HiAce on the road into Torquay.
Only used to to operate in the summer. £1 a key. And they were good too, not like the sh1te I had cut at Trago for £4 that wouldn't open the door. Haven't seen him since they opened the bypass

Have you seen the key for the current 7-Series ? It has a touch screen. I dread to think what a replacement costs.

£6 key? Lift up handle? Anyone with a drill could be through that in seconds, better off using duct tape and sticks
