As usual I’ve got now playing on tonight while I make some dinner for me and MsGinge and I think I heard Tom mentioning something about a new schedule for 6 music at the weekends. I can’t find anything online about this yet so was wondering if anyone else has noticed this sort of announcement today (paying more attention to it than me) so I don’t have to try and find that but on iplayer.

I think he was saying that him and Nemone would be loosing a show a piece but also that liz Kershaw would be leaving. It’s a shame about Tom and nemone but I’d be happy to hear if I’m right about liz.

Agreed Binners! (...and I did a masters in contemporary music!)

As long as Huey, Craig Charles and Cerys survive I'll be happy. Have loved Loyle Carners guest show too.

Try NTS. Far superior independent radio.

I love Giles Peterson's show. I cannot stand Huey's. It just goes to show you cannot please everyone all the time.

I listen all day on a Saturday and only tune out when Liz is on.

Giles can be trying but he still serves up obscure gems.

The only thing I wish for, which they will never do, is ditch the hourly news bulletin. No matter good the music is the news is guaranteed to ruin the mood.

I too listen all day Saturday (as long as I'm in a new van at work). Agree re Kershaw and the news!!! It was insane yesterday, at one point there was an item about dog thefts that was littered with puns 🙄 I know that not everyone is a dog lover, but christ!

Giles was actually alright yesterday, but I'm a huge Pino Palladino fanboy

Gilles kept me sane during lockdown 1. Have always loved his show since radio 1 days. The only person I could happily do without is Liz Kershaw. Everyone's different I suppose.

Indeed, we all have different tastes. I like 6 music and have discovered music I wouldn't have heard on other stations. I just find Giles Peterson too much like the Fast Show's Jazz Club. I've tried but it's just not for me.

Liz Kershaw - I think we all agree it's time for a change.

I’m glad people like different music. Gilles is the highlight of my musical week. Some of his choices are forgettable but he’ll then serve up an absolute classic. I’ve discovered more new music through his show than any other.

I’d wholeheartedly agree on Liz though. Hope she gets canned double quick. @Brant isn’t much of a fan according to his Twitter feed...

Liz Kershaw – I think we all agree it’s time for her to be put out of her misery.

Please take Steve 'Elastica, Idles, NME Lamaque' with you and never re-appear.

It's more like 'oingh' 😅

Aye that's an affectation I wish he would ditch.

His artist in residence playlists were pretty on point though.

Liz is OK, Giles is OK, huey/radmac/Craig Charles excellent. Keaveny toss and Cerys unlistenable..too much yodelling for me.

Goea to show though, I'm glad there are some things I hate and thag some people love them...

Fantastic news about Kershaw. My prayers have been answered

Hopefully she can get a low paid job on the graveyard shift on North Norfolk radio

And lamaq really has got bad, boring 'features' and odd crap songs

Anyway, giles petersen is a weekend highlight you haters are just bloody wrong 🙂

He's had some great shows, interviews with DJ premier and a j dilla special. Love it

I struggle with cerys to be honest, turn of last century ragtime bluegrass not for me

Like Gile's show, but then I like a bit of jazz. To be fair, he plays a lot of dance too, his show the weekend after weatheral died last year was moving.

Huey is a proto national treasure

Liz is boooring, it's the playlist apart from when it's not the playlist it's really dull music. I mean music that was dull the first time, let alone when you played it again. Her and Lamaq have something on the BBC management I'm telling you.

Listening to SM now, his Sunday show is right up my freaky alley

Oh yes, I love Cerys' show. Folk/blues/world music/poetry. On the face of it, should be shyte, somehow she manages it.

Mrs Llama hates it (and Giles)

RadMac should never have been moved from weekdays (Although was MR's health issues anything to do with that?)

I'll happily listen to Giles, Kershaw and most others, just please get rid of Cerys and Steve Lamacq

Think they are announcing the new line up on Tuesday. On Saturday Liz mentioned she was moving to host a Sunday legends (bit like Glasto) slot. Not heard anything else - will be happy if they keep RadMac and lose GP

Loyle Carner's been great. Hope they get him back.

Love Radcliffe & Maconie on a Sunday morning, much better slot than weekdays.

I love Cerys' show, always brings interesting stuff.

Can't understand the Gilles haters, what's the matter with you?? That's Gilles Peterson!

Could live without Nemone, music's fine but the chat's poor.

Better not be getting rid of Now Playing, that's a great show and nice lead into the Freak Zone, one of the best shows.

And lamaq really has got bad, boring ‘features’ and odd crap songs

While I only get to listen to small sections of shows mornings and evenings, I don’t know what you mean by “ boring ‘features’ and odd crap songs”; there are ‘odd crap songs’ on every show! And far fewer than any other stations I can think of. I like Cerys as well, but then I’ve seen Catatonia and Cerys live on many occasions, even been on stage adding percussion to a song, and she’s a really lovely person, I’ll hear no bad words about her.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t her accent that grates with some people...
Peterson, not my thing, but I never listen on Saturdays anyway. Nemone, well, her obsession with electro and ‘beats’ leaves me cold as well; some bands like Orbital, Aphex Twin and a few others I like the odd track or two, but that’s about it.

After a good ride on Sunday mornings I often find my legs are a bit sore after I desperately sprint over to the radio to hit the off button to avoid hearing Amy bloody Lame. Just what is it she finds so chucklesome? And, no thanks I don't need a chilled out Sunday, and all French songs are not a genre.

I don’t know what you mean by “ boring ‘features’ and odd crap songs”

i guess they mean stuff like kids guessing songs from watching videos, "tell us about a time you were late for work and the car wouldnt start" type of intellect, and my personal dislike (altho i dont think he does it now), when his 'profiler' had to guess who the caller was, male/female, how much money they had in their pocket, favourite book etc with total guesswork. "ooh close enough, half a point for that" etc..... what a load of old tosh.

saying that tho, i do like the music on his show, i vote 'keep lammo', just knock the crap features on the head.
radcliffe and maconie is essential listening (and dont you dare say their features are crap, nowt up with 'crisps on the radio' 😀 ), i make sure i get up at 7 at weekends to listen or catch it on Sounds, easily the best thing on the radio.

Like Gile’s show, but then I like a bit of jazz.

I've tried. I really have. One of my neighbours, who's become a good mate, is your archetypal jazz fan (retired university lecturer, proper child of the 60's). When we get together (which pre-covid was pretty regular) he'll shove some on to try and convert me. I humour him but it's just dreadful.

I'm pretty open minded and like all types of music, but I can't get any enjoyment out of jazz at all. Far too much pointless noodling.

I have 6 music on a lot at the weekend, but it goes off as soon as Giles starts is Algerian bongo collectives or whatever it is this week. I just find the whole thing a bit too 'Nathan Barley'

Very disappointed to hear Tom Robinson is losing a weekend show I find his show very easy to listen to.
I think the weekend stuff is a good mix of everything, I’m not a fan of Liz or some of the music Giles P plays but I’m not going to say they should be off air.
The worst waste of space everyday not just weekends is the news. If I’m driving it gets the mute treatment instantly, as mentioned above nothing sucks the life out of good chat and music like the words ‘boris Johnson has said today....’ just get rid of it. And adverts for shows.

Unrelated to the regular schedule but I liked the few occasions when Henry Rollins sat in for Iggy Pop. He doesn't 'umm' and 'ahh', he doesn't waffle, and he's a massive music nerd. He's fully immersed in both the reality and mythology of rock and roll and will give you all the trivia and fun facts behind every track he plays.

I get peoples intolerance of Giles but in his defence here are some bangers which I heard on his show for the first time and they're still on rotation in my house.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo0SgfVmI8c&ab_channel=thaofficialarg

Obviously there's loads more but I need to make more effort to save the best tracks he plays for future use.

Ah I'd forgotten about Iggy....love his show! It's just batshit half of the time....but brilliant for it. Always cheers me up on a Friday night shift if I can get his show on.

Agree re Amy Lame @bigjohn really annoying! I'd vote getting rid of her, giving her slot to Loyle Carner and Guy Garvey returning to his slot.

Its a mystery to me how Liz Kershaw and Steve Lamaq are still there.

I assume the news is a statutory obligation placed on any broadcaster so they wouldn't be able to get rid of it even if they wanted.

re lamaq. Most of my listening is weekday and I genuinely love the line up from Laverne to Gideon Coe.

Its only lamaqs show that hits a bum note. Im fairly sure that the playlist goes from laverne to lamaq but im fairly sure that each DJ and their production team gets a fair degree of latitude with what's played. I love Keaveney's show cos he shares my musical taste, i.e fair smattering of hip hop, rock and will play a smashing pumpkins song just to listen to jimmy chamberlin's drumming. Plus i find him witty - probably cos im northern.

but when lammo comes on its just mundane features and always either plays britpop or late 90s tunes in some kind of nostalgia for when he was at Radio 1, and then also plays oddball genuinely crap songs. Like the other day played hazel o connor and then also this sixties novelty chart song that was like 'right said fred' but not as good, for absolutely no apparent reason and for the enjoyment of no-one

I like lammo cos he's a nice guy and i always used to listen to 'round table' (has that been jettisoned).

weekend bum notes are definitely liz kershaw (see ya!) and probbably Amy Lame, although she's not as objectionable. Kershaw is like a rochdale dinner lady who went to a few gigs when she was younger, like everyone else, and goes on about them but with no insight and doesnt know anything about music. like interviewed woody woodmansey from spiders from mars, made a big deal about seeing Spiders back in the day, but then proceeded to get loads wrong so Woody had to keep correcting her. And she supports Brexit

id say Gideon coe and Guy garvey are like 'alan's hot bath' when it comes to relaxation

They should get rid of the whole triumvirate of boring, middleclass white blokes.

Lemacq
Keaveny
Hawkins.

It really annoyed me that Lemacq had months of shielding during lockdown one, presumably on full and generous pay, (why not broadcast from home? Marc Riley manages it!) and came back with the same tedious local radio **** unimaginative content he's been doing since Moses was a lad. He should be fired into the sun.

edit - sorry, not entirely relevant as not about weekend schedule. As you were.

I'm torn with Keaveny as I think he's got a great taste in music but find him pretty tedious as a presenter.

YES! He's just tedious and out of touch; the music isn't bad, but it is a bit one note. The BBC is an odd place: Simon Mayo and Tom Robinson get nudged out; Lamacq, Steve Wright and Kershaw have tenure.

Lamaque just plays stuff that was hyped in the middle pages of the NME in the mid 90's then completely forgotten about. I always thought someone out there must be enjoying it but maybe not.

If they replaced Lamacq with Craig Charles I'd be happy.

I also wonder how Lamacq manages to stay. When he was shielding and Craig Charles took over that slot became brilliant and it really showed how poor Lamacq's show is.

But I can listen to his shows, where as Liz Kershaw and Amy LaMay are two big switch offs for me. I just cannot stand to listen to them. I'm now worried that Liz Kershaw will be on when I am having to drive to drop my son off at his Mum's on a Sunday evening. No chance of getting nts in the car.

I'm praying the freak zone remains as I think that's my favourite 6 music show.

Was Giles still in Throtch in 98? 😉

I can’t watch any of the Brian Pern stuff on BBC4 without immediately thinking of Giles Perterson...

You’re right that six music should be diverse, and it’d be rubbish if we all liked the same stuff. I just wish he wasn’t on slap bang in the middle of Saturday afternoon. Let’s be honest, most of the stuff he plays has got ‘midnight on a Wednesday’ written all over it 😃

The biggest issue I'd have with Liz Kershaw moving to an 'interview' show for me would be that she sounds absolutely thick as mince on the radio. I'd rather her playing music rather than talking ffs!

Thankfully Radio Caroline has no news and only 2 ads every half hour.
If you don't like one show you'll probably like the next. The man before 9am is a colossal prick.
However ,we had the most amazing top 15 yesterday. I was well and truly educated with bands I'd never heard of.

I love/hate 6music the same way I love/hated John Peel shows when I was a youngster.
I will put up with(for me)the 25% that annoys, as I know that something brilliant will come along and completely stop me in my tracks.
No other station does that for me and I don't do local/commercial shite radio.
The only person I skip/switch off on 6 is the Kershaw, she needs to go to Smashie and Nicey FM (or Radio Caroline) 😉 🤣

One if my little pleasures is on the occasional Friday evening when the perennial supply DJ, Tom Ravenscroft, is standing in for Lammo and still does his 10pm slot he refers to the Iggy Pop show as "Iggy in the middle".

Yes, I've grown to really like Tom Ravenscroft. I like that he uses the word 'rad' 😊
I would have him on air over many of the others.

I also like a bit of the other subbie, Huw Stephens and his soothing Welsh tones.

Yeah, some of the stand-ins I prefer to the main slots.

A million times this. It's bad enough when she's opening and closing that flapping hole beneath her mouth by herself but when she's talking over, interrupting, or just demonstrating how thick she is 'in conversation' with somone else I'd rather slam my balls in the car door than listen to her.

'hi ya'. * off.

Knowing very little about Liz Kershaw, I looked her up. This is my favourite bit of trivia:

"In 1984 Kershaw formed a band called <i>Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits</i> with her friend and neighbour <i>Countdown</i> presenter Carol Vorderman"

Liz.kershaw remains part of the 6 music family and will present 'legends at lunchtime' when she interviews such legends as Pete Townsend. "So Pete what was it like playing Monterey with Jim Hendrix?"

"when did you first realise you wanted to play in a band"

"Oooooooh swinging sixties, carnaby street, mods that sounds exciting..............was it exciting?"

"Did you ever visit Roger daltrys trout farm?" "Oh you did" "so what was that like then?"

"I was such a big fan of the who, I loved that song you did, tin soldiers, you looked really dapper in that union jack suit"

Liz Kershaw to Nile Rogers:

- "So... what were it like in that Studio 48 club then?"

- "It was Studio 54, man! How can you get that wrong?"

- <defensively> "Well, I weren't there, were I?"

aaarghghghghgh the most toe-curling interview I have heard in years

These BBC radio contracts are bombproof, unsackable.

I think the djs get shunted around until they walk of their own accord. I'm sure management are hoping she'll get a job at a commercial station but she won't be flooded with job offers. She'll be hanging onto this gravy train job like grim death. It's inconceivable that 6 music want her to stay on. Even someone like huw Stephens probably wants a regular gig

Pretty sure Simon mayo had Jo whiley foisted on him so he did one. And DLT and his ego had to resign live on air after a perceived slight.

I know this is getting into bullying a woman but I just hate to see mediocrity succeed. Not even mediocrity, abject failure and incompetence. For the same reason our cabinet ministers offend me

You never know she might suddenly become like paxman and interrogate Pete Townsend on his internet activities.

"So Pete I was warned not to ask you this but I think it's important, a couple of years ago there was a big controversy involving you and some internet sites.."

<Townsend begins to walk out>

"So what I wanted to ask was did you manage to sort the band website out so you could buy concert tickets directly from it?"

@fingerbang - it's not about bullying a woman. Kershaw (and her brother in the past) are just not very good at their job. The complaints are about the individual's inability to do the job they're paid for.

Lauren Laverne is good, Nemone too. Mary-Anne Hobbs is another that divides opinion but she's still good at her job. People just don't like her wishy-washy vocab talking about the dichotomous sonic highways juxtapositions etc. etc. She retains the ability to play records rather well.

Please tell me Kershaw will just have a 1 hour slot?!

I could deal with that, I work every other Sunday and my shift starts at 1...van isn't usually out until at least 2 so I could potentially avoid her completely.

Unfortunately Kershaw lives on for another (shorter) day. Hopefully she can move on somewhere else soon.

Mary-Anne Hobbs is another that divides opinion but she’s still good at her job. People just don’t like her wishy-washy vocab talking about the dichotomous sonic highways juxtapositions etc. etc. She retains the ability to play records rather well.

MAH is guilty of talking some absolute cobblers but every day she turns up and drops bangers so she's won me over. She plays music that would get her sacked on the spot from every other station in the country. I'm sitting in a beige office and she transports me to the vampire rave from Blade 2.

Speaking of which, isn't it Techno Tuesday today?

Jamz Supernova is in for MAH now and is taking over the 1-3 slot on Saturdays I think. Today's the first time I've heard her and I can't ****ing stand her already. She mentioned some band or other that were 'from the North of England' like it was some kind of recently-discovered species then proceeded to bang on about London for five minutes. Jesus ****ing wept, no ta.

LaLa, MAH and Nemone are all ace and can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes, MAH talks bobbins but plays awesome music. And this-

I’m sitting in a beige office and she transports me to the vampire rave from Blade.

😎

edit- and some DJs are just shit. Edith Bowman is a good example of someone who will drive me to turn off/over if she's on anything at all, ever, in the world.

I agree, I don't like this Jamz Supernova. She's referred to michael kiwanuk-oo twice now.

She either knows michael kiwanuka personally and everyone else gets his name wrong, or has a weird speech inflection or has just this minute mis read his name on a press release. you know internationally renowned, mercury prize winning, london based MK

she's transferred over from 1 extra so looks like they're offsetting the average age, middle aged man quota with some affirmative action

id be raging if I was Ravenscroft or huw stephens and mrs supernova's just got a regular weekend slot. That's assuming a regular slot is a step up from being a supply DJ - perhaps they like it - who knows

I like Gilles 🙂 I like Huey too, although I'm done with the Funk and Soul show, I liked CC much better as the replacement for Steve Lurpack during lockdown.

Saturday without Liz is a great thing, there's other stuff on Sunday I don't like (Cerys, opinion dressed up as fact and lots of factually wrong too... ) so it's easy to avoid now.

Shaun Keavney is good but yes a bit less waffle would make for a better show

They could have easily got Liza Tarbuck to replace Kershaw and she could have done a couple of hours before her evening R2 show. 2 hours of the old gag of calling dogs names and squeaking the doggie toy would be a big step up.

Ravenscroft has had a regular weekend slot for 11 years now, so I'd imagine he's not too worried

I really enjoyed the first hour of Jamz Supernova today. Just about to pop it back on.

also, this is well overdue.

From lunchtime to midnight every weekday, it's middle aged men, and til now it's been middle aged men from 5am til midnight on a saturday, apart from Liz Kershaw.

I don't have anything against middle aged men per se, not least because I am one, but 6 music could really really use some more variety, this is a good first step.

If you can enjoy Liza Tarbuck's repartee, her show is excellent. She's like unreformed Keaveny, just mindless amusing chatter, but pulls out an absolutely fantastic mix of music. I found a Bo Diddley/ Muddy Waters collaboration album I never knew existed from one track she played last week. Like Cerys, but with fewer random Welsh poets.

Another that I feel bad about detesting is Fearne Cotton. I'm sure she's good at something, but her R2 show is bobbins, and more than that she has absolutely zero aptitude or charisma for presenting on radio.

I'll admit to reluctantly coming round to MAH though. Her presenting tics annoy the buggery out of me ("...and I need to tell you...", "...is the name of that track" after every other track, etc), but she genuinely knows music and plays some really diverse stuff - unlike Lamacq.

The stage name The Black Madonna references the Black Madonna paintings of the Virgin Mary, a tribute to her family's favorite Catholic saint.[11] In response to a Change.org petition that raised concerns of racial insensitivity, Stamper changed her stage name to The Blessed Madonna on July 20, 2020.

In case anyone else is confused. Taking over from Tom Robinson on Saturday nights.

Liz Kershaw - 1 hour shows, 4 episode series. Not clear how many per year but as everyone else is in agreement on here - Matt Everett does a great job at a brief that sounds the same as this, and interviews are not exactly Liz's strongest suit. I'm told on Saturday she's hoping to get McCartney - that really would be a waste (but his interview with Adam Buxton is a brilliant listen if you're a fan, Podcats)
Sunday afternoons on 6 Music is Liz Kershaw’s Legends In Their Own Lunchtime, a new strand, presented by Liz Kershaw, with four episodes per series. The first series begins on Sunday 4 April (1pm-2pm).

I know IR35 rules meant DJs are now staff but I still thought they were on some sort of talent contract that meant they could be exited. I can only think winding liz down slowly avoids some vast redundancy payment given she's been around so long?

Cant be arsed with Huey Morgan. I'm pretty sure they play a recording of the same show each week and I'm glad my weekends don't involve being pinned to the radio. Late night working to Gid Coe I would definitely miss.

Agree on Lamacq being as far past his sell-by date as a tin of Captain Scott's beef stew.
