It's great Lame-O is down to just one night a week. A lovely compromise, as it's obviously written in the BBC 6music runes that he shall broadcast.
Cerys's show is superb IMHO.
Yeah Lame-O is back albeit in reduced form. I liken it to braverman getting sacked by Truss then coming back to the same role under sunak. It's exactly the same, exactly the same . He's the wealdstone raider of indie rock
He’s the wealdstone raider of indie rock
🤣
I was subscribed via the BBC sounds app to the 6music indie forever playlist, it used to be a nice hour of music once a week, lightly curated. I think due to these changes its now an on air show so I get to listen to someone called Nathan go on about stuff and then hear when they've failed to edit out the news! I've given up on listening and unsubscribed.
Cerys’s show is superb IMHO.
And there's me thinking it's the worst thing on the radio & it rushes me out the door on a Sunday
I'm the same i can't stand cerys' show as she'll randomly bust out some 1920's rag time , and I'm out. Although I love Giles Peterson's which similarly has some haterz
I'm not always a massive fan of what Cerys plays on her show, but I'm very glad that it exists.
I actually enjoy cerys’s show, and I’ve been a fan of Giles since 2003.
(I’ve still got a recording of his ‘swell session’ Swedish bloke, featuring the epifani barbers and a rag-time version of 50cents ‘in the club’). Joyous
Alyx Holcombe seems to be where it’s at, metal wise.
As great as her show is, it needs a slot 11-2pm on a Sunday in 6music to showcase metal.
It wouldn’t hurt to feature more from the ‘big four’ (Metallica, megadeth, testament, anthrax), as well as sepultura and the more instrumental leaning bands.
Metal, at 12-2pm on a Sunday, on 6music?
It may shock 6music to discover that, on a planetary level, not everyone incarnates in their human form at a low energy level.
Check out Dr. Michael Newtons “Journey of souls” for a more detailed elaboration.
I’m sure that the late Dr. Newton would prescribe lots of thrash metal for the more advanced souls/ maniacs
👍😂👍😂👍😂

Maybe, 50 years from now, Cerys co, will discover metal and discuss it with the hushed and reverential tones that Harvard academics gave to ‘ethnic’ music in the 1930’s.
Who knows?
From bobbins to biggedy biggedy bong - it's a Mark & Lard reunion!
Stop... carry on!
Why is it always Dairylea?
Absolute quality!

not everyone wants to listen to the past though, bring on the new music!
Or whatever the modern equivalent is.
(Without having to stay up into the wee small hours or faff about on bbc sounds).
My main gripe with 6music is that they barely get out of first gear.
That's often the case, yep. Although Mary Anne Hobbs did slip some Orecus in earlier.
Radcliffe in for Laverne this morning.
A mixed response I’m sure but will always be a win here.
I like Lauren Laverne, but there's not enough Radcliffe on 6.
Can't think of anyone better to present, in his words, the "contractually obliged cloudbusting slogan" 😄

latecomer - 1987 for me - he was still on Radio London then I seem to remember.

When?
I heard it mentioned on the breakfast show this morning but it was a bit lacking in detail (none).
Think I almost cried at the last show, they were so ingrained in my life at that time - can't believe that was 20 years ago.
Listen to yesterday's Craig Charles show, Speeder. They were both on talking about their time together and announced that they are doing a tour about it all. Very funny as usual.
'its a mystery' from the old mark and lard show was my favourite
'whhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooo?'
'mushn't grumble '
I still can't get my head round them playing the full version of 'whole lotta love' and 'marquee moon' on Radio 1 breakfast show
marquee moon
😅
Was that intentional?
@Speeder - https://markandlard.com/
Like the day Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon (if you were born then, if not, skip this bit) or when Alan Bradley got run over by a Blackpool tram on Coronation Street (ditto) – everybody can remember where they were on that fateful day in Radio 1 history. Listening to the radio. Obviously.
Now, following high level negotiations after a chance meeting between Fat Harry White and Scoff Cruddle at a Bedford Rascal Enthusiasts rally, Mark and Marc have been coaxed back to wrestle once again on the sheepskin rug of light entertainment.
Since when was it acceptable to pay happy hardcore on 6music? I like to think I have a pretty broad taste in music, but, just make it stop.
Is this what being middle aged feels like?

It's a broad church. What was it that so offended?
Yes

I just want to know who Richard Hawley has compromising photos of in 6Music management
Do I take it that you don't like Richard Hawley?

Bloody hell, I missed that. Did they play Toy Town? Think I've still got it on vinyl from my bedroom DJ days. Sorry mum and dad , neighbours.😃

Yes
And rightfully so. I think it was this:

Thanks for confirming.
I was going to say, who actually likes MAH's drivel, but then I just heard a listener text in, thanking her for introducing him to this piece of progressive music that took him on a journey whilst he was planting mushrooms...
She quite possibly made that up in her own head, but still
Meh
I am very glad that I have found alternatives.
...such as...?
I listen to Radio France now, the Radio FIP rock channel.
6 Music is garbage at the moment apart from Riley & Coe.
Nick o...NME 1 and selected DJs on Radio Caroline.
Not a direct 6 music replacement (nme1 is)
but if you like guitar music and a DJ that knows what he's talking about try this...

Going back to my thread about the 6 music festival, where I was told I don't understand what a festival is about (I still stand by my comments that it was a small handful of gigs - I heard nothing that made it a festival as such i.e. yes it can be individual venues, but there still has to be a whole vibe and spin off activities going on around it - I didn't get that from the coverage) Anyway, one of the artists playing was Hak Baker.
It's almost as if 6 have a vested interest in particular artists and will not shut up about them. I don't know what that vested interest could be with it being the BBC, but they must mention Hak Baker 20+ times a day. Hawkins this morning said his name at least half a dozen times when announcing his new record
At least we've got Glasto coming up - you know, that festival that the BBC invented....
Before anyone says it - yes, I know I can turn it off and I often do
I just want to know who Richard Hawley has compromising photos of in 6Music management
Ha, yes. John Grant was another one. Suddenly around 2014 it was like THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND - JOOOOHNNNNN GRANNNNTTTTTTT!!!! about every 8 minutes. I'd never heard of him before that but oh boy am I familiar with his work (which is perfectly good tbh) now. Richard Hawley is similar - I don't hate his music, although it's not really my taste, but he does get an inordinate amount of hype. He'll be hosting some shows before long, if he isn't already
It’s almost as if 6 have a vested interest in particular artists and will not shut up about them.
Yes! Very much this.
I noticed it a few years back when they were doing "this year's artist of the year is..." at the start of the year. Having decided who it would be, they then playlisted them pretty firmly, and at the end of the year patted themselves on the back of how this new artist had really broken through over the year.
Now with the artists in residence it's a different approach; and it's a great idea. But it feels like 6Music really sees itself as some sort of platform, or almost promo label, rather than just a regular radio station.
I like Richard Hawley's music - a lot; John Grant much less so; Hak Baker, not for me.
Why should 6music not give a platform to musicians who, in their opinion, deserve to be showcased - as either an established performer (think Hawley) whose latest release should be publicised or Hak Baker who is a relatively new voice with, potentially, wide appeal?
Can't please all of the people all of the time.
And yet when Kendrick Lamar won 6Music album of the year I was gobsmacked as I couldn't recall having heard anything from it at all - all year.
I wasn't, however, surprised it hadn't received much airplay on listening to it.

No problem with giving platforms - it's the sheer relentlessness of it that almost has the opposite effect for me and makes me never want to hear these artists mentioned again. Or whatever else they bang on about with every second breath

Yeah it is a bit sweary! Quite frustrating that in general, 6 Music acts like hip-hop ended in 1995, with one or two exceptions (e.g Lil Sims).
Actually Loyle Carner is another one that I found myself wondering what kompromat he had on management...
It's how the industry works is it not, It's not all about merit, even on 6 music.
But to be fair, John Grant _is_ the greatest mother ****er (see what I did there)
Re Hawley. He's ok. Bit of a miserable so and so when I see him mooching about the park. It's just not worth the god like status bestowed on him by 6 I don't think. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't get beyond thinking he sounds like the organist at Peasholm Park at times
People are still whining about 6Music being no different to any British radio station over the last fifty years or so, as regards promoting certain artists they feel are worthy of it? As far as John Grant, 6Music was playing music by The Czars when it started in 2002, when John Grant was their singer, and were playing his first solo album ‘The Queen Of Denmark’ in 2010.
Clearly people just weren’t paying enough attention… 😏
Loyle Corner is flipping amazing, his latest album is brilliant
The facts are that no other station has introduced me (and countless others) to some outstanding bands/singers:
A few that I can think of immediately...
Hannah Peel - need to see still
Snapped Ankles - missed twice
Preoccupations - missed in Nottingham, missed in Spain (snow cancelled flight), finally saw them at Hare & Hounds (Brum) last year. Mega
Cherry Cheeks - need to see
Bea Bea Sea - need to see
Public Body - v small following but 6 gave them a platform. Saw at the Vic (Brum) last year.
Warmduscher - need to see again, mega again.
Chalk - first heard these two weeks ago and I'm sorting tickets!
Bodega - V good live, new stuff is on point too
Tim Hecker - need to see. Imagine this will be an unnerving experience...
Temples - would see again
Fat Dog - Band of the year already. The most wild gig...(Bodega, Notts). Honestly thought building was going to collapse..
They do have the occasional weird obsession though, I remember a few years back it was Kelis. I mean, she's great of course and an outstanding singer, but they were going on her music over and over - for months.
Nick Cave is another, clearly a good writer (who has been through a lot of horrible stuff), but IMO he cannot sing, or hold a note. Regardless 6 will go on and on and on about him too.
As for John Grant being discussed ^, pretty sure I like only one song of his (Pale green ghosts?). The rest I have heard is terrible IMO and he too (IMHO) cannot sing, yet 6 always serve up a platform. Obviously got fans!
Nowt against 6Music pushing what they think is good music, but as has been said it's the obsession they seem to have with certain artists which is intriguing. No doubt some "perks" for doing so in whatever form that takes.
And Loyle Carner - he may be a great musician to certain folk but with the charisma of a slab of stone a DJ he is not.
If you don't like any/all of 6music, off you pop; there are lots of other radio stations.
It's not difficult - for most people.
6musics daytime playlist is a bit meh.
Sounds way more interesting at night.
id have another radio station (it’s DAB so there’s plenty of bandwidth), playing the same 6music schedule, but with a 12 hour delay, just to let their listeners catch up, without faffing around on the bbc website.
Still no dedicated extreme metal slot on a Sunday 12-2pm, just for the skatepunks?
shame…

Comments like this just come across as patronising at best and childish point scoring tbh
You can grasp that 'most people' are generally capable of having multiple channels and streaming services preset into their listening devices? And perhaps, in a thread about a particular radio station (that they obviously like some elements of, as they listen to said station), they are entitled to express an opinion about certain elements of the station that they maybe don't like as much?
It's a discussion, not an appreciation thread
For balance, I like Riley and Coe, don't 'mind' Chris Hawkins, can tolerate Lauren. Round Table is often a good listen and I don't mind Lammo. Used to really like Craig Charles, but found recently he can be a bit annoying at times. Also have discovered some great music I like. Mark and Lard getting back together was great!
Nick Cave is another, clearly a good writer (who has been through a lot of horrible stuff), but IMO he cannot sing, or hold a note. Regardless 6 will go on and on and on about him too.
OK, there's some reasonable debate on here, all points of view welcomed... except this! Nick Cave is rock royalty, and frankly doesn't get enough love on most radio.
While we're on the topic though, 6Music's love over the last few years for 'spoken word'/ 'shouted nonsense' is really unlistenable. I'm thinking Sports Team (at one point Brant's twitter feed was just him complaining every time that godawful track came on 6Music), Yard Act and the various imitators of toneless bored sounding person saying/ shouting boring stuff over a backing track
Stand on the Word.
That's another one of those songs they play ALL. THE. BLOODY. TIME.
Funny often think 6 music bang on far too much about hip hop and describe people as geniuses when they’re to my mind just waffling about nothing with sampled music in the background - but in fairness I think I just don’t get the genre with the exception of a few interesting artists like Eminem and Kae Tempest.
As for promoting bands, yes sometimes it’s a bit much, but like someone said earlier, 6 Music has introduced me to countless amazing new bands so I am overall very grateful to them for that.
A lot I think is just simple personal preference - for instance if it’s slightly punky and a bit shouty with minimal singing you can guarantee Steve Lurpak will be into it - they’re decent enough bands but he has promoted Idles, Fontaines DC, Yard Act and similar stuff way beyond the what their talent would warrant.
If you're not afraid of double denim, guitars and maybe even a poem,
tune in to Peter Antony at 2pm on Radio Caroline.

6 music was a brilliant listen on Thursday with a day long exploration of Disintegration by the Cure and associated music from 1989, Idles, Fontaines DC are bloody ace and at least have something to say unlike the utterly anodyne Elbow (can’t stand their music) and similar elevator music, got fontaines on order for their new album and bought tickets for my mates kid and his mate to see them in Glasgow this December along with Idles in November.
6 music was a brilliant listen on Thursday with a day long exploration of Disintegration by the Cure
Agree with that.
I remember buying that album on cassette. Loved the Cure growing up and Disintegration was quite a departure at the time. Took a few listens to get into it but I think it's a phenomenal album.
6 Music played some fantastic music on Thursday.
HERE’S THE THING!
I hope I’m remembered for that, and weekly lambasting of the awful racist Liz Kershaw.

Yup, you are! I followed you for a while on Twitter and there was a spell where your only tweets were one or tother 😉
What's Liz Kershaw done - genuinely don't know?
I'm going to have to request money back from the BBC, they've got Nick Grimshaw in for Lauren this morning!
That's got to be a human rights violation or something!
I left BBC 1 around when he started there!
they’ve got Nick Grimshaw in for Lauren this morning
Oh no. That is a kick in the face. Hate him almost as much as Chris Moyles.
Best wishes to Lauren.
Listening this morning while walking the dog, I do think Nick Grimshaw's not quite the right type of presenter for 6Music - a bit too Radio 1ish, chattering about his dinner party at the weekend etc. He's fairly inoffensive though, and the music was beyond reproach - it being Skank Holiday Monday n ting.
I miss the days when Waiting Room by Fugazi used to be on almost daily, think it was like 2016. Usually in the morning. Haven't heard it in ages.
There's a constant unspoken battle in my office over the sonos - I chuck on 6 because it is at least interesting, whereas one of my colleagues always wants Absolute Radio, which is hilariously bad. A few decent tracks on every now and again, but their "no repeat guarantee" doesn't quite have the same effect if the next day is exactly the same. Not sure I can hear You Stole the Sun from my Heart many more times without combusting.
When I heard Grimshaw, I pulled over. Hooked the phone to the van and played the jaguar skills mix on BBC sounds. Job jobbed.

Oh dear God! The workshop next to the one I worked in at my last job had one of those dreadful commercial stations on all the time, Absolute, or Heart usually, and the ‘no repeat’ was a joke, maybe four decent tracks during the twelve hours I’d be working, the same ones repeated every day, the rest just pop garbage - identikit beats with autotuned vocals and some anonymous female trying to sing some meaningless words scribbled on a fag packet.
Oh, and for those whining about Elbow and John Grant, enjoy!
FWIW, I liked The Czars, I’m not keen on Grant’s electro dance obsession. ‘Pale Green Ghosts’ is bloody marvellous, though!

Yup. Just absolutely awful. Music for people with zero interest in music. I unfortunately am subjected to it every day.
Still, could be 'Grimmy'...
I've just read about Lauren, I hope she is ok!
I think the Grim DJ must have been all they could get on such a short notice ?
Never stop long enough to judge the music choices, but I just cannot bear Tom Ravenscroft’s voice. He sounds so utterly insincere and mannered.
Opened the thread hoping Guy Garvey pretentious hour had been canned. It spoils my Sunday afternoon tinkering and fettling sessions.
The music so far on TMM 1.
I do tend to listen to catch up shows on Radio Caroline but I’m rarely disappointed when I dip into TMM1

I just cannot bear Tom Ravenscroft’s voice
I just hear his old man, which isn't a bad thing at all. Just wish he'd been given the chance to cover Lauren's show, along with a few other presenters such as Deb Grant.
As a footnote to the thread, all the DAB radios at home were retuned to Radio 4 a while ago. Life goes on. I listen to Riley & Co on catch up for my Gid fix, but apart from those occasions when it's insufferable on R4 (The Archers, etc), 6 Music is disappearing from earshot. The concern for the Beeb should be that it was a factor in making me really hesitate in paying the licence fee for the first time in my life; the wider debate is another issue, but personally I felt I was getting decent value, as well as the socialist benefits. Nowadays? Not even close to being sure.
