You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Presenters come and go. They need to move people on/around to keep the station fresh…….
More Tom and Deb is a good thing as far as I’m concerned,
I dont think anyone is saying 'less of Tom and Deb’, but there are better ways of achieving what they’ve done. Cut Lamacq off at 6pm (or get rid of him completely.), start Riley at 8, start Gid at 10, then you have 2 hours available for anyone else between 6 and 8, it doesnt keep everyone happy, but it is a good compromise in my eyes.
The daytimes on 6 have lost their way IMO, Craig Charles is ok in small doses, MAH, cant stand her talking, LL is OK, though R4 is on for me until 9am, sometimes later if the post 9am programmes are interesting, so R6 is only on here in the evenings or weekend mornings and evenings, hence these changes have upset me, as Marc Riley is, for me, the best thing on the radio.
There are people on STW though, who just want a radio station that plays round the clock Peel Sessions
They can be found for download...
More Tom and Deb is a good thing as far as I’m concerned, but not sure I like the idea of an every evening ‘new music fix’. The reason most of us listen to 6 is that it *is* a new music station but mixing new with archive – as Tom does on his Friday shows – feels better to me than all new stuff.
I think you've nailed that. I like discovering new music and Marc Riley in particular has introduced me to so much, but mixing it up with older stuff gives it context and just works so much better.
This. Music exists with context, and that context is often the thing that gives it the extra emotional wallop.
The Joy Division session on right now is the perfect example.
NTS2 - 2hrs of Thomas Bangalter picking his favourite influences for his latest solo record earlier
I'll stop.
All shows available on mixcloud
Marc Riley is still incredibly into live music and bringing it to his listening audience.
Gideon is ideal in his time slot.
It's Lamacq that is the problem not him personally I don't think 6 music needs a "drive time" presenter.
Early sat/sun with Amy then rad/Mac then Huey/Cerys is great
Cerys pulls over 800k on a Sunday morning slot and plays every type of music.
I don't get all the hate for Steve Lamacq - I really like him.
For me also the daytime lineup is fine. I'm somewhat ambivalent about MAH as she does like some genres I just can't stand, but generally I think it's the strongest of any of the BBC music playing stations. I occasionally listen to R4 but there's no way I'm listening to commercial, so it's R1,R2 or R6 and R6 wins that contest hands down. It's only in the wife's non-DAB car that either of the others gets a look in.
Yes I wish Keavny were still there but I definitely like LL,CC, SL, MR & Gid and look forward to spending time with them when the opportunity arises.
I don’t get all the hate for Steve Lamacq – I really like him.
Yes I wish Keavny were still there
Does seem to be a lot of overlap for the people who do enjoy those two djs. whereas I can't listen to either of them.
The Tories’ scorched earth policy has wrecked our rivers, our NHS, our freedom of movement. Now even 6 Music is at risk
Anyone else listening to Gid's final show?
I'm not crying, you are.
Very dusty here. Sad, sad times.
Felt like the end of something good.
I suspect Mr Coe will not stick the new job..
It did sound that way in that last link, really worryingly.
The Wannadies as the penultimate track absolutely slayed me, don't mind admitting.
He's used the words "give it a go" several times in relation to the new show... Somehow it doesn't come across as terribly optimistic 😕
Nighty night, Nighty night Gideon.
I'm really going to miss his show 🙁
I didn't realise that was the last one - I'll listen again. Really enjoy Gid's shows. He's a great presenter and his music choices are pretty good too.
Shame when things come to an end but as one door closes etc etc . . .
Listening to his show has been such an immense pleasure, I'm genuinely sad it's over
End of an era this evening.
Yeah 😞
Yep, such a shame 😞
Marc opened with “someone up there likes me” by Bowie. In his own words “ironically”.
I thought Marc's last show was the beginning of June, so was surprised to hear Steve Lamacq announce it was his last while I was in the car on the way to a ride. Sad not to have marked it in some way (no pun intended).
In more cheery news, I have to admit Deb Grant was playing some good tunes on my way home... May have turned it up louder than strictly necessary for the Dinosaur Jr session 😀 She'll never be Gid, but will certainly give her a chance (think her show with TR will be quite different though).
Gid is the guvnor make no mistake 🤣
Deb Grant is okay but the BBC in all it's stupidity have decided to axe 2 shows that were very popular with shows that just seem an odd mix right from the start 🤷♂️
The well of Gid is drying up. Just 3 days left to listen to the excellent Bo Diddley beat special for instance: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001l9yt
Still can't bring myself to listen to Marc's last show.
So, I've been listening to Marc on and off since Out On Blue Six. I have though been listening Tom Ravenscroft on catch up for a while.
For me at least the first 2.5 days at 7pm have been better this week.
Well we're a week in, and it's not doing it for me.
21:10; should be Gid taking us on a journey somewhere far-flung and wistful, new or old, and yet it's Amy Winehouse instead. Just spectacularly retrograde.
Asking on here as it's 6music related..
When did they start playing drifty space type music behind the news broadcasters????
Early days and I’m sad that they’ve got less air time now but Marc and Gid are sounding great in my opinion. Plus the new show with Tom Ravenscroft is pretty good, he definitely deserves more air time.
Unlike others, although I don’t love Steve Lurpak he doesn’t offend me and I don’t mind him staying
Riley and Coe's output squeezed and pushed to the edges because middle-aged-white-men... and yet according to his trailer, we're getting an extra hour of Guy Garvey at the weekend...
I don't actually mind him, TBH, apart from his interminable name-dropping, but still.
But Guy Garvey is so mind numbingly boring though.
Riley and Coe are still as great as ever - need more than 2 hours but hey ho.
I've finally refound the will to live after two weeks of the playlists from the xx member last month. Dull as ditchwater.
It's just a mess on there at the moment. I've found myself listening to streaming far more lately, which is a huge shame for missing new stuff.
Iz disapoint this not a Steve Lurpak announcement ☹️
Him and Craig Charles know where Liz Kershaw buried those bodies 15 years ago. Cerys is in on it, clearly.
It’s just a mess on there at the moment. I’ve found myself listening to streaming far more lately, which is a huge shame for missing new stuff.
Which is ironic given how hard they're trying to be all about "new music" at the moment. Gid and Marc pushed out to make room for "new music fix"*, the recent new music all day thing, etc. I had to laugh when the Now Playing theme last night was... New Music. Creative. Hope someone got a slap on the back for that.
*incidentally, adding "fix" to the end doesn't make it so that it was a problem to start with
I've been enjoying the artist in residence slots the last couple of weeks. Albert Hammond Jr has another week, (well 4 days) from 9pm this evening.
and yet according to his trailer, we’re getting an extra hour of Guy Garvey at the weekend…
Advertising the extra hour within Riley & Gid's show is just sticking the boot in.
In the words of Shaun Keaveny: "We saved 6 Music for this?" All things must pass, I guess.
I am just waiting (excitedly)to see who's slot Huw Stephens gets as a permanent gig.
First order of priority should be to remove Mary Ann Hobbs from the airwaves forever
I am just waiting (excitedly)to see who’s slot Huw Stephens gets as a permanent gig.
He's long overdue a permanent slot, for sure - in the same way that Tom Ravenscroft was for well over a decade. That's what's so frustrating about the changes; they've shoe-horned the evening shows in with a cheap to produce hour from 9-10pm, without tackling the elephant in the room...
First order of priority should be to remove Mary Ann Hobbs from the airwaves forever
Mary Anne Hobbs is just daft in that slot, in my humble opinion. I've listened to her for over 25 years, and adored the Breezeblock. The morning show just isn't right, and I've struggled for so long with it. For the love of God, no more Nils Frahm!
Other than Riley & Coe, the whole lot needs replacing IMO.
It just seems like DJ chess at the moment - moving slots around when really they need to bring in some fresh faces.
Saying that, I'd be more than happy if Shaun Keaveny returned though 🤣
Mary Anne Hobbs is just daft...
I’ve struggled for so long with it. For the love of God, no more Nils Frahm!
I don't know what you mean. Mid-morning when I'm trying to summon up the energy to get some work done is exactly the time I want to listen to some hour long, self-indulgent 'sonic soundscape'... 😂
It just seems like DJ chess at the moment – moving slots around when really they need to bring in some fresh faces.
I don't know. Every time they bring in a young whippersnapper it seems to start sounding a bit Radio 1 for my liking.
People say it's for middle aged people, as if that's a bad thing.
Growing up bridging some really significant musical eras and living long enough to be interested in a really wide range of musical styles AS WELL AS new music is exactly what is good about what six music do and should be celebrated.
Middle aged people are the best! 😂
It really doesn't need to be the new Radio 1
🤣🤣
Oh god Mary Ann Hobbs is soooo awful....its like she's eaten the "how to speak to be down with the kids" dictionary. If she says she's going to "thrown down" some great once more....
And I've just checked....she's only 2 years younger than me! (Aka, old)
People say it’s for middle aged people, as if that’s a bad thing.
If it isn't, then what's the point of the Evening Session Britpop reunion they're pimping so heavily? Like you said, spanning the eras was the whole point of the station for so long. Marc Riley (and Gid) provided context for new music, which is often vital.
Oh god Mary Ann Hobbs is soooo awful….its like she’s eaten the “how to speak to be down with the kids” dictionary
Yeah, so many cringeworthy things she says.
I particularly enjoy when she says the title of the song she's put on in time to the beat, slowing down each word so it hits the music in time 😂😂😂 Jebus wept
She also says stuff like, 'Sonic Youth made this' an awful lot, instead of 'this is by Sonic Youth', like people who are not mental might say. 😂
Actually come to think of it, I guess she's quite entertaining really. Much like in the same way it's entertaining if your dad might pick you up from a teenage friends house party but insist on coming in and throwing some shapes before you both left.
People say it’s for middle aged people, as if that’s a bad thing.
There's far too much emphasis on the age demographic IMO. It kind of makes sense for Radio 1 > 2 > 3/4. But I see the music 6 is playing as being ageless. People who listen to Radio 1 in their teens might mostly give up listening to chart stuff by the time they're 30 and go and listen to Radio 2 (I'm sure the exceptions will shout me down here) but people who listen to alternative music of whatever genre (indie rock, punk, folk, reggae, whatever) largely continue listening to it throughout their lives. We don't need to be bumped off to some other station to listen to Sting.

@kayak23 sounds like you’ve been locked to MAH for too long ;-P
😂🤣😂
I got it on lock fam!
I might write some bars about it, in fact.
'I think it was from the year of nineteen-ninety-seven when I first heard the sonic world of MAH take me on an aural adventure into the world of beats and artisanal sensory exploration.' In the really slow soft voice she does nowadays.
The David Sylvian: Spirit of Sylvian show still stands up there as the ultimate 'this must be a pi**take, right'? moment. I like Japan, don't get me wrong, but of all the artists out there? A total headscratcher for me.
What nme1 has just played. The ads get annoying though.

The ads get annoying though.
To be fair the internal BBC ads on 6Music are persistent lately.
In 2004 I became a student again 25 years on at the same university. Same music as last time, played everywhere, along with some more contemporary material. Now with easy access to music, there is no longer a need for the decades nonsense, or to be restricted to any era or genre.
Lamaq rant: The latest britpop multi part podcast series with lamaq and whiley sounds interesting (as I was an avid listener of the evening session) but Jesus talk about lamaqs happy place. The guy is still living in 1995. Every time I catch his show it's always elastica playing. Every time
Lamaq must have lobbied hard for that podcast series
Wonder if there's any royalties for him with Elastica? The first album was released on his own record label, after all.

@hightensionline

Interesting! Didn't know that
I tuned in at 9pm last night and Albert Hammond Jr was playing his classical music collection for an hour I actually enjoyed it but I could just imagine the complaints about Marc Riley got moved for this?
I don't like the artist in residence thing at all - so never listen - but appreciate other people might like it.
But it does seem very niche for a 9pm slot (it used to be on at midnight). Riley & Coe from 9pm - 12am makes more sense IMO.
I totally agree - the artist in residence thing just gets in teh way and devalues the Riley & Coe programme by shunting it passed a time I'm interested in hanging around for. AHJ has been quite interesting but I'm not sure I'm actually listening, even when doing the washing up with the radio on in the background, I couldn't have told you why he was playing a classical collection last night.
Every time I catch his show it’s always elastica playing. Every time
Accidentally tuned in yesterday afternoon while shopping and he was playing a live Elastica gig....like, did anyone actually like them the first time around? Other than that Wire rip off from Trigger Happy TV, they're just unbelievably forgettable. Poor Lamacq, I don't think even Radio 2 would have him. Maybe Radio X, they seem to exclusively play Oasis, he'd fit in well.

Yeah, loved them.
Drove up to Derby uni to see them live around the time Connection [s]dropped[/s] was released. Bought a t-shirt that was maybe 2 sizes too small for me.
Shame I couldn't still carry that off!
I think at the time they were quite different to what else was around, being fronted by 3 strong women (and a bloke on drums who nobody ever remembers 😂 )
Quite a different sound.
Didn't last long but they made a mark for sure and deserve their place for a notable influence of those times.
NME 1 appears to be ad free today.
So worth a listen.
So worth a listen.
Not for me.
Tried it (with ads) the first time you were banging on about it zippy, found it slightly less dull than R2, and I can't stand R2 😉 😜
The only thing that will turn me off 6music, is if they keep dropping the likes of Bill Nighy,Russell Crow and other old duffers into guest slots. They need to be parked in R2 or FAB FM 😆 🤣 😂
The David Sylvian: Spirit of Sylvian show still stands up there as the ultimate ‘this must be a pi**take, right’? moment. I like Japan, don’t get me wrong, but of all the artists out there? A total headscratcher for me.
You know the answer then: go listen to something else and stop bitching about it. It’s what I do.

Typical STW bullshit. I saw Elastica on their first tour, they had to repeat a couple of songs for their encore because they hadn’t had chance to write more new material, and they were excellent.
And as for “Every time I catch his show it’s always elastica playing. Every time”, what that does is prove, quite categorically, that you hardly ever listen to his show! I’ve just proved it, by the simple act of going onto BBC Sounds, tapping onto 6Music’s tab, and selecting each day’s show listing, going to Lamaq’s show, and looking at his playlist. I’ve gone right back to the beginning of July, skipping Saturday and Sunday, for obvious reasons.
Anyone care to guess how many times he played an Elastica track? You’re quite welcome to follow the same process, which will prove that over July, he played them twice! Once on Thursday 20th, which was part of the Britpop series, and I actually heard that while I was driving, and I had a wry smile to myself about the usual STW whinging, the other time was on the 4th.
Now kindly STFU!
With a mere 90bhp available, progress is too leisurely to be called, death-defying, but on the motorway in fifth gear the Megane's slow pace really becomes a pain.
You know the answer then: go listen to something else and stop bitching about it. It’s what I do.
What you're doing is complaining on here about people complaining. I think it's gotten under your skin, which is fair enough.
I literally just shrug my shoulders at 6Music a lot and switch it off. Perhaps do the same with STW if it's that irritating to you. With the utmost respect.
Anyways, Gid is covering Cerys Matthews' show from this Sunday for a month. Should be cracking.
Anyways, Gid is covering Cerys Matthews’ show from this Sunday for a month. Should be cracking.
Yes, I caught that message on Thursday's show - I'll be tuning in for that 👍🙂
6 Music gets a lot of stick, but Saturday mornings really are top notch! Radmac followed by Huey is as good as it gets radio-wise
All the 90's rave stuff was excellent yesterday. I even tolerated The Hobnobs insipid wittering
Indeed. Starting with Souls of Mischief is a good thing, until the dawning realisation that it's a 30 year old track. I mean, I know that's how time works, but '93 can't really be 30 years ago.
I think you'll find that 96% of Lamaq's playlist is elastica and other britpop bangers . That's a scientific fact
Did enjoy Gid Coe yesterday morning as I supped my tea in bed. Cerys is fine and all, but I prefer his tastes!
6 Music gets a lot of stick, but Saturday mornings really are top notch! Radmac followed by Huey is as good as it gets radio-wise
Agreed.
Just caught the end of Gid covering yesterday morning because we were in the car. Will probably listen back when I need a break from MAH, etc.
It’s all our fault https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/08/bbc-6-music-radio-station
The ultimate irony is that perhaps in trying to escape the desperately uncool 6 Music Dad image attached to the station, it has sunk itself into its own midlife crisis.
Thought that article was pretty good. He's bang on about the themed days, they're tedious and stupid.
Anyone else think Huey has been a bit shite lately? 5-10 years ago he'd play Faith no More into Joe Bataan into Talking Heads into Schooly D. These days he just seems to slap on a 1990s Party Hip Hop compilation and sod off for a cuppa
Yep to the above. It's an OK article, has the usual stereotyping about the audience and misses the point of Gid's show completely, but overall it's fair enough.
One of the biggest issues I've noticed is the huge drop in live acts on 6Music nowadays.
If only they could use this new focus and schedule to get Lemacq to **** off too.
Someone's been listening!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-66680888
BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq is to scale back his afternoon shows from five days a week to one.
Sound.
Thank God.
