Pick a small handful of bands that they seem to be promoting at the moment.
Put on a small handful of individual gigs - said band, a support act and a DJ, with tickets sold separately to each gig. So, a gig then?
Bang on endlessley for a few weeks about the bands they are putting on.
Call it a festival.
I don't get it - is it just me?
Maybe.
I'm enjoying it despite not liking to listen to live music when I'm not there.
I think it's similar to the likes of Mach comedy festival or Edinburgh Fringe. Different venues and different tickets for each.
It's good for Manchester.
Craig had a nice interview with Hak Baker yesterday and the girl with the bum crack today.
Lots of different bands in mainly independent venues get advertised on a radio station....seems fine to me.
If only these people broadcasting were able to be turned off if we disliked the content, maybe call it an "off button" so you don't have to listen. I bet someone has already come up with that one though.
The interview with CMAT today was hilarious. Craig Charles is amongst the worst interviewers of all time and even he didn't manage to ruin it.
As for the rest of the festival, meh, I love Jordan Rakei, ambivalent about the rest really.
Got tickets for the smile tomorrow 😊

Yes. Definition of a festival:
an organized set of special events, such as musical performances:
a folk/pop/rock festival
hold a festival The New Orleans Jazz Festival is held every year in the spring.
the Cannes Film Festival

It’s funny how those on here who keep bleating on about 6Music seem to be completely unaware of the fact that the device they use has the means to allow it to be turned off, thus removing the source of irritation they keep complaining about.
But then, they’d have nothing to complain about… 🙄
This year's isn't doing much for me I admit, but I like the fact that they do it.
Not sure a national radio station promoting something live in a single city works for everyone. But then look at the Glastonbury coverage and the BBC...
It's a bit stifling for a week or so, but will put up with if it it keeps R6 going.
(Although still longing for the death of the awful awful Craig Charles day time show)
jim - disagree about Craig Charles but completely agree with the rest of your post.
frank - amen to that. Variety works.
Oddly though I enjoy his funk and soul show.
A lot of these artists have been genuinely championed by Six Music/specific djs, so they are rightly proud that they can play a part and bring them together like this.
More power to their elbow.

You don't only have festivals over a long weekend in a field.
Celtic Connections is 18 days long and over 300 events, well over a 1000 performers. It's not the sort of festival you turn up to with a tent. 🙂
I was at the opening gala of Glasgow Film Festival last week but I don't expect that one ticket to get me in to every screening in the every cinema.
But then look at the Glastonbury coverage and the BBC…
The BBC has probably built the world's largest archive of live music performances over its history, from the Proms to the Peel Sessions. Glastonbury coverage seems like overkill but it's really quite an economical way to capture a broad spectrum of the world's musical culture in any given year incredibly cheaply. The cost of covering Glastonbury for a weekend versus something like Top of the Pops for a year is trifling but the volume, variety and quality of material is much much higher.

Doesn’t stop most of the audiences turning up wearing hill walking gear though!
6 music have a festival?? They kept that quiet!
I don't get the love for CMAT. I saw her supporting First Aid Kit in 2022. Awful music, poor songs and rampant self-promotion. Why do people like her?
To clarify, I thought that her interview was brilliant. She's clearly a personality, agreed on her music though from the few songs that I've heard!
As much as I'm looking forward to the gig today, I agree with the op that the endless promotion for it on the station became annoying quite quickly and feels like it's been going on forever.
Be interested to hear what you think of The Smile today Davros. I'm off to see them at Hammersmith Apollo tomorrow night.
just been watching the young fathers set on iplayer, bloody brilliant. prompted me to go watch their 'best kept secret' gig on youtube too.
off to dublin to see them with idles and LCD soundsystem in june, looking forward to it even more now.
Preferred it when it moved round the country - it's not like Manchester isn't short on culture.

That sounds like a gig & a half - have seen Idles & YF both twice. Idles in a dive pub just as they were breaking & Joe came out before the rest of the band & just prowled the stage like a boxer before a fight.
Really really want to see LCD Soundsystem
Sounded great, would have loved to have gone.
Would have loved to see Young Fathers, Gossip, Jordan Rakei and The Smile and probably a load of others I've forgotten. The Mary Anne Hobs/Violin thing also sounded pretty good.
OK they'll promoted it to death but can't say I blame them, it's a bunch of artists they've supported over the last few years and they want to show them off in their back yard. Why wouldn't they?

It's you. You're not on your own by any stretch (see above) but other opinions are available.
