Has anyone had this? I read recently that because of CV19 all MOTs due to expire after 30/03/20 would get an automatic 6 month extension. My bike MOT expires on the 20th of May. I just checked the .gov website and no extension has been applied as yet.

It's my only form of (motorised) transport at the moment so can't really afford to be with out it.

I read something the other day that your expiry date will only update in the days before the old expiry

I got mine MOT'd last week - proper MOT not an extension, shouldn't be anything stopping you doing the same. Did same with car a couple of weeks earlier.

Didn't bother checking, just assumed the Police would know, whether it updated the central system or if they just added 6 months to that.

Ours expired in April. Garage offered to open just to test it but not to service it as well, so we are hoping they properly reopen soon

Yes.  Mine expired 25th April and I SORN my car yesterday and checked the mot via the gov.uk checker.

Its clearly marked PASS from 25th April with expiry in October, and there’s a clear advisory section within which the words COViD-19 extension were present.

Chap I know just tried to tax his car but the MOT has just expired. They wouldn't let him tax it but gave him a list of testers nearby who are still open.

Except maybe the government restrictions on non essential travel. Sort of the point of extending MOTs is to stop people needing to get an MOT test.

Mine was due beginning of April and updated a few days before hand. It has sat on the drive since apart from one short journey to pick up some shopping. I am in no rush to get the MOT done. May as well wait until the 6 months is close to finished. Not going to do a lot of miles in that time anyway.

We took delivery of a new electric car the beginning of March. Have recharged it 3 times now (once in the past 8 weeks). The other car will sit on the drive apart from an occasional drive one a month or so.

The comment that you don't want to be without it suggests you know there are issues that would result in a fail?

If you're using it regularly, get it MOTed anyway?

I had assumed that once it was showing on Gov website as being extended then you would be able to tax it?

Our Polo is due its first MOT next week, I’m going to leave it for now as it’s also due to be sold once this is all over. I’ll put a new MOT on it when I advertise it. Hasn’t updated on MOT check yet.

Just because your car has an mot does not mean it is still road worthy, if you are not getting it mot'd because you know it will fail then why are you still willing to drive it?

From GOV.uk:

What you need to do
Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be updated about 7 days before it was originally due to expire.

Three days before your MOT was originally due to expire, check the expiry date has been extended.

If the expiry date has not been extended 3 days before it was due to expire, email covid19mot@dvsa.gov.uk.

You need to include these details in the email:

the date your MOT expired
your vehicle registration number (number plate)
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency will then:

update your vehicle’s record
email you to tell you this has been done

But is caveated with:

You must still keep your vehicle safe to drive.

The gov website says they extend them automatically 7days before they run out. OP - like you mine expires on 20th and at present hasn’t been extended; perhaps need to check on 14th. Meanwhile I’ve had no problem getting an MOT booked for Friday at local test station.

Sort of the point of extending MOTs is to stop people needing to get an MOT test.

Maybe previously, but now they are encouraging people to go to work, I think they’ll want people to get MOTs done if possible. Apart from anything else there won’t be the capacity to suddenly do double the number of MOTs when all the 6 month extensions start to lapse in September.

Not at all. I am "shielding" so don't want the extra hassle of getting it done if the gov say I don't have to.

It's a motorbike. I can't imagine anyone would ride a bike knowing it to be unroadworthy.

Thanks everyone. I will check again tomorrow.

Garden centres are open now, so I would extrapolate that non essential travel is now permissable & getting MOT trumps gardening in my world 😉

I got our MOT due car done this week , can you imagine from September on there will be a bit less than twice the number of MOT tests to be done and its very unlikely that the Gov will extend due to a shortage of MOT slots , so my advice - get it done , exercise the machine its good for it.

The rules are pretty vague so you can read them lots of ways. Plenty of people get some of their food from gardening, other get their exercise. Not exactly essential to everyone but very useful to some.

Getting your car MOTed when it is due may be reasonable, getting it MOTed when it isn't due for another 6 months seems pretty high on the non essential list to me.

Or Panic Buy! Get your MOT now before an MOT certificate becomes the new loo roll

I just got mine done/ Figured if it needed work better to get it looked at now whilst I don't really need the car as opposed to September when I might actually have to use it.

Garages are going to be very busy when everyone properly starts using their cars again...

My dad had his car MOT’d in late April about three days before it was due to expire originally. It had had the extension applied on the .gov website but he phoned up his local dealer asking if he could book it in sometime expecting them to say in a few months But they said they could do it the next day, came and picked it up, serviced and MOT’d it and when the driver returned it spent 20 minutes cleaning all the contact points. They were very keen to get some work and to ‘catch up’ with backlog for the reasons finishthat said

My MOT ran out on the 18/4, I tried to tax for 1/5 on the 12/4 but had to wait until the MOT ran out before the 6 month exstension was applied.

Did this on the 19/4 all went through.

Thanks to all that gave helpful replies. I just checked again and it has been extended to November. That's one less headache to deal with.

I was tipped the nod that if your vehicle is due an MOT you should probably get one rather than waiting for and getting the extension. The theory I bought into was that when you come to sell or part exchange your vehicle in the future it will flag as a gap in your MOT history and could be a potential bargaining point for a buyer to pay less and car traders computers will spot it staight away as a potential anomally. Not saying this is true but to me paying £54 now rather than in six months time didn't seem an unreasonable choice to make - especially as my motor was due a service anyway!
