Currently commutting 45 miles each way for 27k. The job is really flexible meaning I often encorporate the commute into my working day but then work the time back before I leave in the morning or when I get back at night, I usually work from him 1 day a week as well.

Now I've been asked to apply for a new job within the same company for a few grand extra but based an extra 10 miles away, if the flexibility was the same then I don't think I'd have a problem with this but as it would be a service manager position I'd have to be a lot more visible/available to staff. I would still have the option of working from home occasionally but day to day I think I'd be adding 1hr at least. Options:

A: Apply as a realise this is a good career move, suck up the commutting for a year as I know it's be easier to move on with the position on my cv.

B: Stay put. The extra money would be taken with petrol costs and dog walker fee's. I really value the flexibility I have currently and enjoy the job.

Apply.

No idea your age or cv so can't say whether it's a good move or not but do not forget your package is negotiable. They like you as they've asked you to put yourself forward for it so if you get to the negotiating the package stage, calculate your costs and negotiate a package that covers those and leaves you well compensated on top.

Alternatively, if the role is not great for your overall career ambitions you may not want the hassle. Work is not everything. Balance is a great thing to aim for. You will not be on your death bed regretting not working harder 😉

In the last 10 years or so, I've had a 50 mile commute, 30 mile commute, 60 mile commute & currently a 40 mile commute. Each way.

The incentive is that I live nr Peterborough where wages appear to be a bit crap, so can get much better wages if I get a job nr Cambridge.
Obviously, I could move nearer Cambridge, but the amount we paid for our 4 bed detached would barely get us a two bed starter home near Cambridge.

Your situation is very different to mine though, as my commuting always had to take place out of working hours. It sounds like you have a lot more flexibility in your current role, regarding working hours than you would potentially have in your new role.
I'd go for the interview, but would want to know exactly how frequently you would be able to work from home etc. & try to get a bit more money to cover your extra expenses. Let them know your concerns about taking the role and they might be able to accommodate your needs a bit better?
You don't want to end up out of pocket financially & have less time!

1) I'd be skeptical - you never get lost time back

2) otoh it really depends on what the commute is like - one stop on an intercity train? empty motorway? from one side of London to the other?

We're really a London suburb, hence insane house prices. I can get to the City by train quicker than my brother in law who lives in Wimbledon!

I do 55 miles each way but only 3 days a week. I wouldn't want to do more.

ITs not distance its time you should meassure adn the varience on that time. If 55 miles = 1h+- 10 min either way then that would just about be ok for me. If 55 miles = 1hr 30min + 30-45 min traffic varability problems then no.

Definitely depends on the actual commute and how long it takes.

For about 11 years I used to commute 50miles each way which was approx 50mins in the morning and hour in the evening. Around 25miles of which was on the M1, between a couple of traffic issue hotspots so it was okay. It was better than at a previous job which was 35miles each way in traffic.

The last few years it got bad and was a minimum of an hour in the morning and anywhere from an hour to 90mins+ in the evening, it also meant taking to the back roads approx 2-3 times a week, it used to be twice a month!

It just made for a horrible day as you never knew what to expect and was not nice at the end of a long day.

Current job is 20miles each way and is about 30mins in and 40mins home, also very consistent so far.

For me the distance is second to the quality of the journey, even time to a certain extent. In current job I can drive 5miles, get on a coach the rest of the way, but this takes about 45-50mins in and about an hour home, but the stress is taken by someone else. I tend to mix the drive in vs. the coach, depending on whether I'm cycling after work or not.

I've been asked to apply for a new job

Looks like you're in a strong bargaining position. Negotiate more money, make it an easier choice.

Not sure as I'd do it, mind. It'd have to be a considerable sum. I've done the whole hour+ commute and it grinds you down, reckon the only way I'd entertain it these days is if there was an option that didn't depend on traffic conditions.

45mile commute for 27K?

f*** that to start with.

i get paid similar, so i know roughly how much you get per month.

minus car costs, you're not far above minimum wage.

I would:

Apply
Get the Job
Move

In that order.

Forgot about this, thanks for the replies.

Update: I didn't go for it. Had to go to the office I would be based in for a meeting the other week, the commute was 25 mins longer despite only being 10 miles further.

I started reading this thinking it was by bicycle, felt at bit weak about my 5 miles to work.
