Worked well for me - lost about 15kg. The usual worry is will I have energy to ride? I never had an issue, if I had a big ride on I'd schedule my 2 days to avoid the day before and day of the ride. For normal rides of a couple of hours, a bowl of porridge in the morning would be plenty anyway, so I could do them on fast days anyway. Plus fast days are creating a calorie deficit, nothing magical, so if you were targeting say 600, burnt 800 by riding, adding a few hundred back in of riding snacks still give the deficit effect.

I'm no nutritionist but I thought that for pro athletes or those who do a lot of exercise that they suggest a consistent calorie intake is best.

In terms of performance yes, a consistent intake is best. But presumably doing 5:2 is a weight-loss effort and not a performance decision.

Move more - eat less. It ain't rocket science.

No need for nonsense diets.

Why's it a nonsense diet? It's a means for controlling calorie intake (eat less, move more) in a way that works for me and my lifestyle.

I'm not doing the argument again. Google my username and 5:2 if you want to see my opinions.

I used it for 12 months worked well for me.I ride once in the week and 1-2 times at weekends. worked the 2 days around that no problem.Lost 1 stone which has stayed off since through exercise and sensible eating.
I found it just helped get my weight down now It stays the same.
Give it a go.

Coming up to 3 weeks in. Eating healthily on 5 too plus dropped booze. Lost 12lbs and it's been pretty easy. I've ridden up to 1.5hr on fasting days with no real issues. Kept to the 600 cals. Ive got a few bars and gels in the pockets just in case. Feeling very positive about it. Really not disliking the feeling of being hungry. Go for it.

I am doing alternate day fasting - i.e. 1:1 rather than 5:2

I do a local 37km loop which has 360 metres of climbing and my performance does drop significantly if I do it on a fast day.

I still manage to get around though and make sure that I have my main (300 cal) meal of the day about 30 minutes after finishing.

I do keep a couple of gels in by saddle bag in case I get into trouble but I have not needed them yet.

If I was going to do a longer ride (I have a 108 km scheduled for 1st Feb) I would drop the fasting for the two days surrounding it. Just a case of being sensible.

As for the previous comment about nonsense diets this is working for me and I do not even feel hungry on fast days. It fits with my lifestyle too. Try it or 5:2 before you post ill-informed comments.

So eating less in a different way is your advice?

I've been doing this for around two years, usually fast Tuesday and Thursday and run Mon, Wednesday and Friday and or Saturday. I use my fitness pal everyday to log my calories. Friday PM to Saturday night is takeaway/wine/
Time. I try not to get anywhere ear my weekly calorie allowance.

So far I've lost 38Lbs and I'm the lightest I've been since my early twenties. I did put quite a bit of weight on after being poorly, but the general advice of eat less, move more didn't seem to cut it for me.

Done it a few times, lost weight each time, trained equally as hard on fasting days without issue.
