I was thinking of doing a Banger Rally later this year. Basically you buy a car for less that £500 and then drive to Venice via interesting places. Hopefully you and the rest of the rally can keep your car together.
Anyone done anything like this?
Posted here rather than Pistonheads to avoid too many 'experts' views. I am more interested in the happy amateur approach

Are you new here?
Can we have some more details on this Maserati that you've bought anyhow?
Shame, i sold a Mondeo recently for £500. 2009 and passed MOT with only advisories on 2 front tyres.
That would have been perfect.
Sounds brilliant. Spoke to a guy that did one to Africa. Towed a trailer full of school supplies because his wife had volunteered in some school on the way.
No practical advice sorry.
Maserati is on hold after the monster Merc ate its gearbox.. Back from the garage now with a nice big bill which has eaten into the Maserati money unfortunately
Might be the same one we saw last summer. Drove past us on the peage in northern France, we then caught up with them at the old GP race track outside Reims. Some interesting cars. Seemed like a friendly bunch, if a little "laddish"
I've always wanted to do a banger rally but I'd never be able to organise it with my selection of mates. The people who would be up for it are permanently skint and the people who could afford it are never off work.
The organised ones sometimes look a bit forced. It's all students, fancy dress, decorated cars and selfie sticks.
I want to just buy a few Fiat Panda's and convoy to Mongolia without making a song and dance about it. Is that too much to ask?

There are a few interesting old barges out there for £500, I was quite surprised. Head says something in the VW group and diesel. Heart says no roof and the biggest engine I can get.....
We did the Staples2Naples rally a few years back in an old Mondao. It was a good laugh lots of characters racing across Europe.
One memory is the guy on his honeymoon and in the Alps not mentioning to his wife they had no brakes but it was okay as they also had no Oil and he was putting over 5 litres of any oil he could find in the car. The rally was only the first part of a 2 week tour of the south of France.
Great fun, and if you want to have a laugh and like sitting in old cars for 6+ hours a day go for it.
3.2 litre Merc convertible with a new mot would be my choice
I always wanted to do one in a hearse
There are some fun sub£500 cars or there.
I wonder if that rover would be reliable/cheap to insure.
A mate did the Mongol rally about 12 years ago, did in a micra, had an amazing adventure he said the best place they went was Iran.
I know of a Honda Civic Auto going for £300, two owners really nice car.
I'm liking the look of that Celica.
Wonder if you could get an MGF for less than £500. Or some grey import craziness from Japan.
Wow! Just wow! https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202002297870980
Fast, practical and cheap, what could go wrong?

In a horrid gold.
Actually this is making me feel sad as there are loads of well loved decent working cars under £1k which will no doubt soon get scrapped 😪
This £500 Micra is cleaner and in better nick than my 4 year old Passat https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202002227613763
I have an 2003 Audi A3 parked up in the barn with 9 months MOT remaining that I would jump in tomorrow and drive to Venice and back without a second thought. Just no use for it at the moment and it is worth more to me as a spare in case my other vehicle breaks, than the few hundred quid I might get for it.
We came <this> close to picking up a Polo gti 6n2 for £450 at the end of last year, decent history, even good sticky tyres, and a load of rattle can black where it'd just had all the rust cut out and welded. Not sure I'd have trusted the gearbox for this job mind...
Junior did the Mongol rally. A 25-year-old petrol 205. He bought it in Nancy, drove it to Pau where papa did some fixing then drove it to Mongolia via Iran (French passport) and lots of 'stans. When he got there he ran out of time so lent the 205 to a guy he met who drove it back to Paris. It's now in a barn somewhere near Paris.
Here's the point at which the IRA say "we're chasing the French" and then decide to chuck some yoghurt into junior's car: 1:02:14
