...and if so, did it help?

Depends what you're wanting it to help with, I'd hazard.

Wikipedia suggests it's taken as an antidepressant, to offset MDMA come-down side effects, and as an appetite suppressant. There doesn't seem to be a vast amount of quality research into it's efficacy for any of those usages, though.

The bulk of the first page of Google results are either people selling it or pseudoscientific "yay supplements!" sites, which wouldn't instil confidence in me.

As I thought... it's for depression, previously on Venlafaxine but stopped last year (see plentiful threads etc).

I bought some online a few years back, because it was believed to help with SAD, but in fairness I didn't take it regularly enough to say if it helped or not.

Plus buying online, there is no guarantee it is what it say on the [s]tin[/s] plastic bag.

Doesn't mean it doesn't work either, of course. Just that we don't really know either way yet.

I've taken it in the past to help with mild depression and it worked quite well, better than any prescription meds I've ever taken for it.

Be careful what you buy though. Some formulations available in high street stores like Boots and Holland and Barrett contain Valerian root which is a sedative. I have no idea why such formulations exist as 5-HTP on its own is all you need. These are the best in my opinion; https://www.naturesbest.co.uk/5-htp-tablets-100mg-p564/ , also available under the Lamberts brand (they are the same company).

There is quite a bit of research on its effectiveness slowly filtering through, but some is inconclusive and there are no long term studies into its effects or safety profile. I see it as a short term fix rather than an ongoing treatment for depression though. If you suffer from long term depression then counselling / psychotherapy worked wonders for me, and I've been med-free for years now.

Use it in winter when I get a bit down with the relentless darkness and I've always felt a positive improvement

I've had meds and CBT but want to stay off prescribed stuff if I can right now as I'm living in Spain. Just have a rough couple of months and wondered if it would help take the edge off things...

I used it, not for an anti-depression thing but to increase focus for work etc. And it did its job, but maybe too much - my mind was going at a million miles an hour. Was coming up with massive to do lists every day and firing through them.
However, it was too much and I stopped taking them and now feel much more chilled out. Possibly not as productive though
