Chucking out some old shite and found one of these
What does/would it do ?
Is there a sensible use for one or is it 10yrs-old kack ?

Apparently, laptops with high-end GPUs would disable the GPU unless an external monitor was connected. Dummy dongles trick it into believing that it was connected to an external monitor and crank the GPU up to max.
They're used for GPU mining. Plug one in to fake that the GPU has a monitor attached. They were needed on the 1st gen 3060 cards to get full hash rate.
I've run a PC topless but onlyfans shut me down in the end
(so I might get better perf from a laptop (or PC) if I plug it in? - how would I tell; anything I can see in settings etc ? I don't do "much" with computers really)
Many many years ago we had to make dummy VGA dongles. The reason - our Sony projectors wouldn't talk to Sony laptops! Worked with everything else but we'd have to start any Sony laptop with a dummy loads attached and then swap it out for the projector cable
What @kelvin said - used to be an issue with OS X that you couldn’t run a Mac Mini headless unless you plugged in something to fool it into thinking there was a display connected.
used to chuck them in mining rigs to keep the cards alive... cant remember what cards needed it.. i suspect AMD...

Sony kit, so of course you had to do something like that. There was probably some proprietary plug you had to use but didn’t know about to make it work.
