You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hola
I'm going to apologise in advance I'm not hugely tech
Broadband on ones new pad is a woeful 1-3meg adsl line, fttp is due shortly in the area
On the coverage map shows 4g external but not interal.
My though was as short term an external area and booster...
So what's the crack, do I just buy a kit and get the ladders out?
Or do I use a 4g firm?
Something from outdoor router or a huawei outdoor router would work -
If three works in your area try a smarty mobile sim as it’s only £18 for unlimited data on a 30 day contract.
Thanks I'll have a gander.
How accurate is 3s cover map as its showing good....
3 don't do 4G LTE everywhere so you're limited to speeds sometimes.
I use EE and get 70mbps down on 4G in the sticks of north wales 🙂
We have an EE external 4G aerial installed - remote, converted farm building with 2ft stone walls. Charged £100 installation and monthly data SIM. Barely get 1 bar signal outside/ nothing inside.
We had same issue with rubbish broadband speed, so ditched the phone line entirely and went 4G. To do that, I...
- used iPhone 'field test mode' (google it) to determine location of nearest 4G mast and what frequency it's on. (There are a few 4G frequencies, ours is 1800MHz. Mast is just over the brow of a hill.)
- bought a signal booster (aka repeater) and antenna (directional parabolic because we only got 1/2 bars signal outside the house). Bought from mobilerepeater.co.uk - their website appears to be down at the moment? Others available. Note you need to choose the right kit for the right frequency, or pay more for a multi-frequency one.
- Paid a man £100 to mount antenna properly on the roofline and pass coax cable into the attic.
- Set up booster in attic with a simple whip antenna on the 'out' side.
- Use a 4G router (Netgear DWR-953, others and more recent models are available) sited about 5m away in room below.
- Use an EE SIM card and get unlimited data for £25/mth.
Results: 3-4 bar phone signal throughout the house, broadband speeds of 20-40mbps download, 15-30mbps upload. Very happy.
Cheers all,
Daft question my works mobile and send is vodaphon my personal one is giff gaff so would a multi frequency repeator do both?
Obviously 4g I only need one provider but 2g I'd like more than one
You're talking about a booster, and most people have replied about 4G internet gateways with an external antenna.
Difference is that you're proposing boosting the 4G signal inside the house, but everything here is about providing internet/wifi inside the house via 4G (but not increasing mobile reception inside the house).
There aren't really many options for legal 4G boosters.
Vodafone sent me a little box which plugs into the internet router when I whined about the poor quality of the signal.

A femtocell (largely redundant with VoWifi), but that doesn't really help when you're trying to solve poor landline internet speed by using a mobile connection.
[Edit] Yes, you could use an external antenna with a 4G modem to provide internet, and then plug a femtocell into *that* to route 4G over Internet over 4G for any devices that need it [/Edit]
I want 4g broadband
Standard broadband is not an option and so I'll be getting the external aerial and 4g modem sorted. Thanks for the links and kit recommendations above. I think I know what I need to get 4gbroad band
It's more can you also improve the 2g phone signal across multiple networks with the same kit
I've one of these on my Three broadband router, fixed it to the tv pole on my bungalow.

4G broadband will not improve your 2G or 4G phone signal (short of femtocells, as above).
@duncancallum - Giff Gaff is a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that uses O2's network. Vodafone use their own network. You'd need to see which gives you a better 4G signal - they'll most likely use different masts, and might well be on different frequencies. A multi-frequency repeater may also include the 2G/3G frequencies too. Generally, cost goes up with more frequencies. You will probably need to point your external antenna at just one mast though.
@Aidy - if OP goes the route I used with a 4G repeater/booster, it will improve phone signal on 4G, as well as allowing use of a 4G router (or phone directly, or phone as a wifi hotspot) to get broadband over 4G. I had no trouble getting a legal booster, but there are certainly several attractively-priced but probably-illegal options direct from China on eBay. Agree femtocells are no use at all for OP's use case!

Oh. The rules changed in 2018*.
That probably gives me a few more options (used to be that only the Cel-Fi units were ofcom approved).

Christ I'm confused....
House has no to low signal internally
BT broadband is 1 to 3meg
I need broadband
I also need a phone signal on Vodafone and also ideally giff gaff.
Now if someone wants to talk about fuel or tuning classic cars I'm your boy but this stuff is way over what I understand
🙂
What 4G signal do you get externally, on what network?
Sorry - I'll try to clear it up:
There's effectively two options discussed here for 4G broadband in a low-signal house:
1) Install a 4G modem with an external antenna
2) Install a 4G signal repeater (with an external antenna), use a "normal" 4G modem.
(1) is more conventional, and is probably a fair bit cheaper. Fewer moving parts, too.
(2) has the advantage that it would boost signal for your mobile too. But only for one network at a time (legally).
If you just care about having phone calls, then a new enough mobile phone should be able to do VoWifi without having actual mobile signal.
Aidy
That's clearer cheers.
My mate says this will do Magic box
I'm hoping VoIP phones will be issued.
My works phone is Vodafone which is my important one.
The actual fitting stuff I'm fine with I'm just confused with what tech to buy
Oh and we're on works phones with limited access to apps n stuff
Your Magic Box is Aidy's option (1) which should give you decent broadband speed provided you get a half decent signal outside the house, but won't do anything for your phone signal. You should be able to voice call over wifi though, if your handset supports it. Good luck!!
I'm using a Huawei H112-370 which is a 4G/5G router. Has the latest Wi-Fi6 on it, and has two antenna sockets on it that you can use for example with and external antenna if signal is a bit weak. There's lots of different antenna supporting 4G from simple back of unit ones, to window mounted or external ones.
If you go on Cellmapper.net, select your 4G provider it'll show the nearest masts. Which will help you working out what you'll likely get. I'm getting 100Mb down/30Mb up consistent using the internal antenna on the router, 514 metres away from the mast with no direct line of sight in an urban location.
