firstly i would never click on thread with this title so thanks!

so what would you buy a hugely successful impossible to buy for best mate / brother in law for his 40th!? we are really stumped.

does not need to cost a fortune but wants to be classy, thoughtful (he says skiing a bunch of strangers for help) and just not naff (ie, anything that pops up when you google '40th birthday gifts')

he's not a rider, but goes running. doesn't sup whiskey, prefers gin. so thats me goosed!

ps we have under 7 days.

1. A pen? Could go montblanc or even a wood turner using wood from your garden?

2.a forging course. See for example joel blacksmith knives - in a weekend he can make his own kitchen knife. The one I made with Joel was one of the best things I have ever done and the joy from using something I made is great every time I cook.

You might want to report your post to get the title changed.

Either:

Something personalised. An engraved gin glass?

Or:

An experience. Karting / skydiving / quads / shooting range / many many others.

He drinks Gin...

All sorted...

Loads of "learn to make your own gin" schools around the country, and many of them still going just fine despite lockdown... Or those that aren't are likely to give you a voucher that he can redeem when he wants to at least.

As a Gin lover, if someone gave me this for a milestone birthday, I'd be very happy! 👍🏻

My Wife got me a flight in a Tiger Moth for my 40th & it was an amazing experience!

I'd definitely recommend it, although the current Covid situation obviously means things like this might not be possible for a while.

Thought you were really resentful about being forced to celebrate your 40th by wife/friends/general peer pressure and came here to commiserate. Disappointing.

thanks. Tiger Moth might be a good shout, but then i thought he'd probably prefer wing walking! thats an expensive jolly! but it says 12st max...

has anyone bought or been bought a paragliding experience?

On a big birthday I think normally it is good to buy someone an experience, like a car track day, something they will remember.

Standard answer: fist-master 5000?

As above an experience / course. Zip wire in north wales? (That's what I wanted, but didn't get)

It was my 40th Birthday recently, I too am a runner. A few things that I got that I thought were quite cool.

40 beers. My brother brought me 40 different beers that he'd accumulated over a few months. I like a beer and there was a load of stuff I'd never buy so that was a nice touch.

A bottle of Port from 1980. Not opened it yet, but looking forward to.

A pair of running shoes. I am a shoe geek and have wanted a particular pair for a while but could never justify the cost. I am now the proud owner of a pair of £240 Nike Vaporfly Next%.

A 2 day weekend of posh food. We have a weekend at Le Manoir and one at Ynyshir booked. Neither are cheap, both will be amazing.

A flight in a microlight?
Feels just unsafe enough to make it pretty exciting.
I was bought it for my 40th and really enjoyed it.

Generally memories over things - experiences, meals, activities

Or something customised - custom map, print, art work (have a browse of etsy and not on the high street)
