Shes an artist not really that materialistic she likes the simple things or design things that are simple...

It was my wifes 40th yesterday, I bought her a discovery kit from a perfumery in Paris called Juliette Has a Gun, they specialise in Rose perfume, the idea is she picks a perfume from the 2ml samples in the kit. It went down very well and the perfumes are amazing.

Can't remember what I got the OH, but I got the sprog looked after by my parents and took her to Rome as a surprise.

I'd echo what organic has said, unless some of those other items you mention were some kind of early 40th present I'd up your budget a bit!

I once gave my wife a beautiful shiny artifact from one of Italy's top designers. (A Campag Super Record chainset for my new road bike build)
Really, women have no sense of humour have they.

According to MrsWCA, 'nothing' is all the rage this year.

YMMV

A mate's missus 40th is in a few weeks time, she got her present early, they left this morning for a weekend at Silverstone. Guess it's a bit late for the OP now though.

It'll be my missus' 40th this year, although I did buy her an engagement ring last month, and am buying her a rather grand wedding in a castle in Scotland next year.

I do like the perfume idea though, proper cool.

Commission a painting of her favourite view? I managed to get one done for £125 about 6 years ago.

Nope, a local art gallery - briefed the artist myself and even asked for a colour scheme that matched our decor.
