I am currently creating a document/manual for a 8bit Atari game called Space Fortress Omega.

I've the sketches and would like to create a digital of the "Black Mamba" space ship below. Even though it's in forest camo and no black.

What would be a good program to create a 3D model of the craft for rendering and them taking the output in a typical vector illustration package ?

Or just a balls ache, and stick to A2 paper and brushes 🙂

I don't know what you have tried so far but anything commercial is going to be expensive.

You could one of the trials of Rhino or 3DS Max.

Blender is the open source option.

I've only really used Rhino for sketches and diagrams at work and I do know that if you want to improve on the basic rendering it gets very expensive.

Thanks Gobuchul
3DS Max....Ouch on the price.
🙁

Looks like I'm sticking with the crayons and paper 🙂

Whilst searching I came across TinkerCad, wondering if that might work.

Blender is free and pretty powerful. You could also try sketchup but its probably not the best for complicated shapes like that; plus you'd need a 3rd party renderer, such as V-Ray.

I'd give Blender a go first.

probably schedule a month to model and texture that to a reasonable renderable poly count fpr an experienced game artist.

Typical 8bit manual and artwork.... so nothing like the game 🙂

Check out Space Invaders for example...

The Cover

Space Invaders

The Actual Game
The Game Itself

No. But it's not going to be a professional standard manual, so it can go on the shelves to compete with Battlefield V this Christmas.

I'm sure it would. I still play 8 bit stuff, got my Raspberry Pi with Retropie, loving Crazy Climber at the moment.

I also just paid for the Zork 1 to 3, so I fully understand that gameplay is not about fancy graphics.

It still amazes me what can be crammed into an 8bit Z80 based machine. As for the Atari 2600....

Hope your project goes well!
