I'm a structural engineer, often we are doing surveys of damage in buildings, and can easily end up taking hundreds of photos; and then realizing the key thing I need to see is 2 inches off the side of the image.

Ideally, I'd like a camera that would be quickly set up in the middle of the room, and take a 360 shot of all the walls and ceiling - then later I could look at this image file and screenshot the views I need.

Unfortunately my google skills are lacking and all I can find is 360 action cameras. As they are optimized for videos my thought is they would be vastly over specced in terms of the sensor and processing, but might still produce rubbish still photos, if they have a still photo mode at all.

Does anyone know if what I want actually exists? and if so, what is it called?

Cant you do this with the Google streetview app on most smartphones?

I remember trying it a couple of years ago. The results were good.

How accurate does it need to be? A phone or tablet can do 360 photos with the right software (built into some of the camera apps now). Need slow careful panning.

Not a professional job, but quick portable option if just for reference.

Or at the other end are 360 survey cameras in the £thousands.

Brief exposure to the construction world, some of the construction software companies have associated imaging solutions. If you use a specific system there might be some products they provide or recommend.

Yeh streetview you pan the phone around according to on screen cues and it stitches the pics together to make a kinda weird 3d inside a globe type thing

Accuracy wise, not very. And no issue with a bit of fisheye or distortion.

Resolution, as an unscientific guess I'd like to read 16pt text on the wall of a normal bedroom, having taken the photo from the middle.

Just downloaded streetview, playing with it now

Google Photo Sphere, does not work with flash, so bright lighting required in buildings.

Some phones (like Wiley Fox Swift 2 X) do not have the motion sensors required to make it work.

just tried Streetview using the phone camera. not terrible on the walls, ceiling and floor very poor.

As the "tripod" is me holding the phone and spinning in circles, the error I'm putting in compared to the size of the room seems to be whats causing the issue.

bog standard Iphone panoramic seems to give better results.
