As above...I've currently got a 306 hatch with nice Thule carriers but looking at getting the estate version for lugging stuff and hoping to put the bikes in the boot to save drag/increase security.

Prefer to have the bike upright (revs leak oil out of U-turn when upside down) and have the seat backs up (at least the wider one) due to the dog.

Cheers

Got an old 1999 306 estate. It's brilliant. I just take front wheels off bikes and stand them upright in the back, right way up. Dialling down the u-turn makes it easier. Can get two bikes in that way just putting one side of the back seats down, or 4 bikes putting them all down.

If it's just me I leave the front wheel on and chuck it in sideways.

It's not quite long enough to sleep in the back unless you're a hobbit though. Electrics are shoddy (you may know this already). The 2.0 diesel is noisy and a bit smelly, but does 50mpg on the motorway and is pretty quick.

Cheers Mowgli, yeah I know all about 306s - every time I go to buy a different car I just go back to them as I know how to fix them. Would rather spend the money on other things than a fancy new car.

Getting one with a tow bar too so might get rid of the roof carriers for a tow bar one for when the boot is full. Can easily sling it in the boot when not using it.

Would a bike fit sideways on against the back of the back seats with both wheels off?

Yup, so long as you don't have your saddle too high you can just whip off the front wheel and wheel them right in, my record is 5 bikes inside and all the associated wheels, plus 2 passengers and a driver. Then you can load the towbar rack 🙂

Genuinely a great car.

well I got it...bike fits in with no wheels on across the boot up against the back of the rear seats so really does take up no room in the car. Excellent. Could easily get 4 bikes in that way along with 4 adults and all the associated bumf.
