I always thought 3 were the worst network for coverage, although I have heard for a 3G phone (iphone/galaxy) they are now the best. Is this correct?

Depends where you live seems very patchy to me ok in most cities, non existent in the hills

3 is dire and I get no signal for 4 miles around the top of the Mendips but 02 works just up the road

I'd say they were no worse/better than any other network (although in general the 3G connection is more available), I've found plenty of holes where O2 and Vodafone didn't work either.
I swapped over to them recently 'cos I couldn't resist the £10.50/month SIM only deal, it's on a rolling monthly contract so you can always get out of it again if you find the coverage isn't great where you need it...
