2nd monitor issues

I've got a Dell laptop provided by the company I'm contracting to. In the office, it plugs into a docking station via usb-c and I can use the extended display and mirror or switch between the two screens.

At home I have a usb-c to hdmi plugged into my monitor hdmi2 which worked fine when I plugged a phone in.

With the laptop, something's happening, as when I touch the mouse, the monitor screen wakes up, but none of my laptop's content will display. The screen is just black. I can see the monitor in display settings, but not the options for extended display. Any ideas? Ta

As with any IT issues, try to identify and isolate what is at fault. You say the monitor works with another device, so that is good - is that using the same cable? If you have another laptop it would be worth trying that to see if that displays OK, and then checking the more advanced graphics settings on the two to see if there are any obvious differences.

Do you have another monitor - swap this over and try the smae cable/laptop to see if the monitor itself is the issue

Most modern monitors will take pretty much any input and select the 'live' one automatically, but you may need to just check google for a manual way to select input, resolution etc on your monitor just in case.

any chance your IT team has the laptop permissions locked down ? I had to get them to allow me to install drivers for the USB hub before it would allow me to use the screens. Shouldn't happen with USB-C though, but there may be permission restrictions.

Knowing the security policies and restrictions I've already encountered, it's possible. You wouldn't think a monitor would pose a threat though and works fine at work though. The docking station connects via usb-c.

Could be that their monitor is pre-configured though. Everything goes back to/comes from France

My wife had issues at home connecting a second monitor via the USB-C hub after an update, she had to get their IT to remotely sort it (was working in the office). IT had worked for over a year then stopped. She has a newer Thinkpad Pro dock, I have the slightly older Pro Dock with USB3.0 which needed drivers.

Might be running at too high a resolution/refresh rate. Drop both to minimum and see if it works

Is the usb-c to hdmi dongle a generic one? I've had a few different usb-c and hdmi dongles just stop working after a few months. With Dell, Samsung, HP lappies over last 10 years. Internet said the laptop was expecting the dongle to do some work and would stop talking to it.

I pinched the one that came with my wife's HP lappy. Ended up buying a second one (HP USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter). Not had a problem in >2 years of daily use plugged into Lenovo (locked down work one) and then personal Dell laptop. I run 4k at 60hz over it and 2K at 165hz through a Dell branded hdmi to dp one. So I recommend any Dell, HP branded one.

I had this with a locked down laptop for a client I was working with. IT wouldn’t unlock the settings so I just bought the same version of dock off eBay which solved it.

My dell usb-c hub doesn’t support my ultra wide monitor resolution so I get a blank screen. I have to plug it directly into the laptop usb-c port. I use another hub for a wired usb keyboard and HD webcam which works fine. I’d rather like just one plug-in but have three including power cable (it’s 150w so not USB-C).

Do you have another lower resolution monitor you can test it with at home? Though unless the USB-C to HDMI converter is doing something odd the laptop should be fine outputting 4K (I assume the laptop isn't 5+ years old?). That said I'd go with the suggestion of getting a second Dell dock/replicator for home use, it's just less hassle in general and provided you're only talking about driving one external 4k screen then even the cheaper models can handle that (it gets spendy if you're trying to drive 2 external 4K monitors)
