Quite a high pay out eh?

A university student in the US city of San Diego has received $4.1m (£2.7m) from the US government after he was abandoned for more than four days in a prison cell, his lawyer said.

Daniel Chong said he drank his urine to stay alive, tried to carve a message to his mother on his arm and hallucinated.

Seems pretty crazy that he could go completely unnoticed for 4 days.

I wonder what the payout would have been if this had happened in the UK (we don't really have the same approach to solatium/general damage claims)

Would you take the pain for £2.7m? The physical stuff would be bad enough, but that poor lad must have lay there drinking his own urine and imagining a very very horrible death.

I think it's fair enough. It's not a pro-rata fee, it's a payout to reflect the trauma he suffered.

Exactly.

Doing JUST four days for 2.7m would be easy.

It's the not knowing if you will ever be discovered and released, or if you have just been left to die. THAT would be the hard part.

For that 2.7m seems quite cheap!

4 days without water could have killed him.

I'd down a few litres of piss for a couple million. But of quiet time would be quite nice 😀

Yup, reduced because they're poor and foreign. Classy.

Pay me that much and I'd sit in a cell drinking my own urine!

Seriously gross and he must have gone through hell.

K'ching k'ching ££££££!

What no Daily Mail, "he probably was a bad 'un anyway - as 'normal' people don't end up in jail" comment 🙂
