Just had a very random message from Amazon:
The French alert system for dangerous products (Rappel Conso) has published a recall notification about the below product that you have bought on Amazon.co.uk due to the following risk: ingestion.
Product:
Duracell Specialty 2032 Lithium Coin Battery 3V, pack of 4, with Baby Secure Technology and suitable for keyfobs, scales, wearables and medical devices (DL2032/CR2032)
(my emphasis)
Very weird alert as:
a) I'm in the UK
b) I don't ingest my button cells
c) Pretty sure all batteries carry an ingestion risk and probably always will
Had that mail as well a few mins ago..
Latest packs of all button cell batteries have been made extremely difficult to get into, this is to stop infants and us owd ‘uns opening the packets thinking that they’re throat lozenges. Thank the French for being on top of their game, we’ve got rid of, or are getting rid of all this nanny state red tape!!
Is disappointed no time travel involved...
Here’s the relevant Conso link: https://rappel.conso.gouv.fr/fiche-rappel/12556/Interne
I've used the 2032s I bought and they were all a PITA to get out of the plastic packaging and also all had the sticky thing which tastes like shit designed to get children to spit them out.
In fact, exactly the same as all the other Duracell button cells I've been buying for years....

Apparently they failed a tear test.
I could barely access them with scissors!
the sticky thing which tastes like shit
I know it was sticky but, ummm, how do you know it tastes unpleasant?
how do you know it tastes unpleasant?
I always lick batteries and live mains circuits to check they're working 😉
The sticker thing doesn't actually taste that bad (to an adult), or maybe that's just my cooking conditioning me..

You can get your tongue over both terminals of D Type battery? Hell of a chat up line I suppose!

You should use different oil...
The annoying thing about the sticker is the residue it leaves on the cell, it quite often stops my Polar HR sensor from working and I have to take the cell out and scrub it to get a good contact after I've stuck a new cell in.
Those exact batteries wouldn’t work in Apple AirTags until I removed the bitter coating. I did so in the obvious way. It is indeed bitter.
isn't this the French lot who decided recently that the (by now ancient) iPhone 12 will give you cancer?
I have those batteries (and got the email!) so no, those packets are not easy to get into!
I think they're talking bollox (again)
yep, really annoying! Bought some cheapo ones that don't have the kid-safe packaging/coating, much better 😂Those exact batteries wouldn’t work in Apple AirTags
Baby Secure Technology
due to the following risk: ingestion.
So it is not just me who struggles to get the packs open and ends up using my teeth* to rip the packs open then.
*the other people probably use their own teeth rather than mine
I'm quite disappointed you don't use a plasma cutter or something similarly appropriate
I have the email as well.
So, if the batteries are already in use, and you haven't been an idiot and eaten them... just ignore and carry on?

Yup, our government prefers they drown in the channel.
and you haven’t been an idiot and eaten them… just ignore and carry on?
I figure you really need to ingest them first, you'll have a better claim that way.

Those poor 2032 cells....

I feel sorry for the person handling your return

yep, if you look at the RC site quite a few brands of CR2032 have "failed" some kind of specification, but it's packaging related, nothing whatsoever to do with the battery or safety of.
have “failed” some kind of specification
Packaging tear test opening too large a gap.
