Has anyone seen JoJo Rabbit or The Gentlemen yet?
Top Gun: Maverick and Ghostbusters Afterlife
Friend went to see JoJo last night and reported back that I have to see it, so we are this afternoon, I saw the trailer when my grand daughter and I went to see Le Mans 66 and decided then and there that I had to see it!
Queen and Slim looks promising
enjoyed jojo rabbit very much
Went to see The Gentleman to avoid a party hosted at our house by Son2. It was not as bad as I expected, but it wasn’t great. At least I can say I’d been to Basildon House quite a few times. I wanted to see JoJo but alas I was over-ruled.
Dune
......if it's anything like Villeneuve films so far
Personally I am soooo excited about Dune, but that's 11 months away!
Garth Franklin has started his excellent roundup of 2020s films
http://www.darkhorizons.com/the-notable-films-of-2020-0-b/
Not really 2020, but got dragged along to see Frozen 2 over christmas at our local Vue in york.
Film was meh, but... to compete with the new Cineworld that's opened they've replaced all seats with the premium recliners and kept the price at £5. It was the most comfortable i have ever been in a cinema!
I can see a lot more cinema trips coming in 2020 because of it.
The Vue in Manchester is the same, seats are <£5 most of the time.
Pick the films you go to see and the timings and you can have a cinema with only a few other people in it!
I want to see The Gentlemen. The trailers looked quite amusing. And obviously Top Gun and No Time to Die are the two big ones to look forward to.
Yeah, I was sat by myself in a Vue just before Christmas having paid a fiver. Brought my own drink and all. Was surprised when Motherless Brooklyn started as I was beginning to suspect I'd walked into the wrong screen.
Loved JoJo Rabbit!
Looking forward to a Quiet Place 2 and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
I wish my local Vue was £5...
1917
The Lighthouse
not a lot else grabbing me as yet
Fast and Furious 9!!!
Escape from Pretoria looks promising
Little Women on the back end of 2019 really.
Fast and Furious 9!
Yep, lots of shite films on the way
Jumanji 2; The Next Level
Was excellent, right up to the point where they went north into the snowy lands of Jurgen's fortress and Karen Gillan put some clothes on.
The Personal History of David Copperfield.
I’m looking forward to the new Star Wars film “Don’t rub my lightsaber”
No spoilers!!
Jojo was very good! Totally mad!
Loved Jojo, would have benefitted from more Hitler. Taika Waititi stole every scene he was in.
We also saw the trailer for David Copperfield; looks like someone is trying to make Dickens entertaining.
+1 for Jojo.
Looking forward to all the action crap to be released over the year.
1917: Sam Mendes' - World war 1 suicide mission to deliver orders that could save many lives at the front line
Technical tour-de-force with Deakin's one-long-take cinematography. Brilliant Steadicam/gimbal/crane as we discover things at the same time as the leads. Amazing technical achievement.
Shoe-in on the Oscar.
Quiet moments good too. A fabulous section halfway through as night closes in. The lighting in that section is terrific.
I occasionally got dragged out into "is this a bit like Call of Duty?" But moments were strong and varied with enough emotional impact, and a suitable climax.
Worth the trip to the flix.
Very, very happy with the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot where they make the previous film again to stop Hollywood rebooting the film the went to Hollywood to stop it being made in the first film.
And Shannon Elizabeth obvs.
Just seen Kermode review Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler. He was waxing lyrical about it and, Sandlers performance deserves Oscar nomination. Limited release now, but will be available on Netflix at the end of the month. I wouldn't normally give Adam Sandler much heed, but I will look out for it based on this review and the trailer.
Just seen 1917. Rone about covers it. Superb air of tension all the way through.
Funny, one of the previews was the new Tom Hanks thing. Obviously Americans know who it's about, but means nothing to us. You could hear people in the cinema going "WTF is that??" or words to that effect. Can't believe it got a release over here.
Just back from seeing 1917. Technical masterpiece (surely a shoe-in for best cinematography Oscar), but pretty weak script. Still worth a trip.
Looking forward to Tenet and Dune.
Went to see The Gentlemen the other night and loved it. So much humour in it. Avoid if you don’t like the ‘C’ word. Not particularly high brow but guess that’s not really the point of the film. If you like Lock Stock or Snatch I’d say you’d definitely enjoy it.
So far the only movie I'm interested in seeing is the man who killed don quixote.
Re 1917, I really wish the english could emotionally move in from WW1 and WW2 movies, but hey, they did vote for brexit.
Jojo Rabbit is terrific, phenomenal.
Queen and slim and some mercy trailers looked very good.
Thought 1917 was excellent. Couldn't work out why they didn't send a carrier pigeon though 😳
Carrier pigeons are great for send back somewhere they know. Other than that they are pretty pants. (But tasty, eh Speckled Jim?)
Not seen the film btw.
Just back from seeing 'The Gentlemen', absolutely superb but cant decide who stole the show Hugh Grant or Colin Farrell. Easily Guy Ritchies best movie with the usual bucket loads of Twists and turns.
Just back from Jojo Rabbit.
The most bewildering (in a VERY good way) film I've seen since Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
I'd be very happy in a world where every film was as odd, funny, serious, moving and unclassifiable as this. If there was any justice we'd be talking about awards for this in the same breaths as 1917, Joker, et al.
My top 5 films list might just have a strong new entry...
I've been looking forward to Uncut Gems because of the Daniel Lopatin/Oneohtrix Point Never soundtrack but all the reviews say it's superb, out on NetflIx Jan 31st.
"Seberg" for me. Unfortunately not on at the local Vue where I can get cheap tickets, so it will be a 2nd mortgage job in central London.

For sure.
I didn't realise it was a Netflix job ... loved Good Time. That's worth watching if still on Netflix.
With you again rone 🙂
Competition to win a years worth of Vue tickets. Spot a film reference in this and post it on Vue's Facebook (so don't bother if you don't do Facebook 😉 )
I like the sentiments of the vid tooo
With you again rone 🙂
🙂
You seen Ad-astra? Purchased it over the week. My Dad has put me off watching it!!
Not yet, meaning to see it at the local art-house. How has he put you off??
He just said it wasn't great. (Not that we share the same taste.)
Ah, I see. 🙂
Watched The Gentlemen over the weekend, very Guy Ritchie, but also I found it very funny. Even Mrs W who absolutely hates swearing found it entertaining.
Went to our local Odeon expecting it to be fairly empty, was a weekend but being post Xmas I thought it would be quiet, but was really busy. That was at 9pm.
Catching up with Hustlers tonight (not to be confused with the dire The Hustle on Netflix.)
Prepare for disappointment! 😉
Yep. Total shitappointfest.
Hustlers: enjoyed it in a Monday night junk food way.
But - crimes against slo-mo, and the Director thinks they're making Goodfellas when they're in fact making Showgirls.
Reviews were a bit robustly positive. I mean ... five stars Empire?
I mean … five stars Empire?
Exactly what I thought - it was a trashy, shallow piece of entertainment, not a perfect, classic film. Particularly some of the back-stage "banter" between the women, was so forced and unrealistic. I skipped over a big section about 2/3rds through too, cos it just got boring.
Unfortunately, J-Lo's arse was the most memorable thing about the film.
Ha ha. Yeah GF was going on about her ass after that.
Widows was a much better example of this sort of film. And no idea why it was referred to as a heist? Was hardly Ocean's 11.
If this is female empowerment they neither hit that spot nor the convincing narrative zone.
Checked out Uncut Gems at the weekend and I'm still not entirely sure what to think, it's definitely an experience and I've never seen a film quite like it, after two hours of stressed out chaos I felt worn out and dirty, definitely a big thumbs up though.
Saw 1917 at the weekend. Wasn't that blown away by it. Terrible script made worse by the obvious 21st century-isms in it. The one shot filming got in the way after a bit, and the story itself was neither original or compelling. Both the French and Germans were one dimensional.
3/5 at best.
Didn’t really enjoy JoJo Rabbit.
Probably because a couple of mates said “you like Wes, you’ll like this” which put me in a dark frame of mind even before I walked into the bar of the Everyman.
I thought it wasn’t one thing or the other, wasn’t a comedy or parody about the war, was realism reimagined either. Seemed to flit between a comedic hitler imagined (which was obviously JoJos imagination and conscience) but the character wasn’t comedic enough to really make a mockery of the leader of the nazi’s.
Once the bombing of the town came into frame, the realisation kicked in, I could see JoJo’s reticent at telling the girl the wars over, that’s simple enough to understand, but by then the film was almost over par the walking out into the street.
Quite why it’s up for zillions of awards makes me think the world of cinema is in a poor state ATM.
To say it’s a Wes type film is demeaning of Wes, the only link I saw in JoJo was a load of kids at camp, the fawn/purple colour pallet, and a few shots where the early scene frames contained a static scene with a wall and a door to the right and a kid on a bicycle riding across the frame... if that’s the Wes trademark it’s sooooooo far off the mark it shouldn’t even be referenced.
Er.. ^^ lot of unnecessary spoilers in that! Can they be hidden??
Saw "The Gentlemen" yesterday, really enjoyed it. Not a dull moment, really funny too in places. Some great performances, particularly Hugh Grant (never thought I'd type that 😂) Nice return to form for Guy Ritchie.

I'm glad it's good, reviews have been pretty harsh, it's cliched nonsense and all that, but I think that's what you want from what's effectively Lock Stock 4.
It's very similar in tone to Lock Stock, Snatch etc but also very much it's own film (not just remaking the same old stuff again like the latest Star Wars films 😂) Some nice touches that bring the style up-to-date. Definitely not just another generic London gangster film!
Just saw The Personal History of David Copperfield, probably needn't have bothered. It's rather well done in a BritFilm sort of way, just not very Iannucci.
Anyone see the "Life Cinematic" thing on BBC4 last night? Sam Mendes talking about his favourite film moments etc?
Very good. Especially enjoyed he description of how the scene in 1917 was created.
Edith's a bit brown-nosed, but bearable.
Next week is Edgar Wright, I believe.
The Personal History of David Copperfield
Went to see it last weekend. I enjoyed it, while it wasn't a faithful rendition of the book, it captures the whimsy of it, as Orwell said "with Dickens there's a wolf at the door, but it's wagging its tail" some of the characters were a bit more sympathetic than their portrayal in the book, but Hugh Lawrie's Mr Dick is I think a better version that he's often portrayed. The colour blind casting is also of note, and welcome.
Enjoyed it, solid 8/10
I have tickets for The Lighthouse tomorrow - very excited - it looks good!
Life Cinematic was very good once I got past Edith Bowman laughing at and agreeing with everything Sam Mendes said, without actually contributing anything of value herself. Particularly interesting that he appeared to rank Paul Thomas Anderson alongside the likes of Scorsese and Bergman (always nice to have one's own opinions validated by someone far more knowledgeable.....).
David Copperfield was fun but not as amusing as the fact that one of my clients thought it was about the magician and had wondered why he hadn't spotted him in the trailers. Yes, really.
I have tickets for The Lighthouse tomorrow – very excited – it looks good!
That's got my attention too.
The VVitch was quite good but hard work.
I finally saw JoJo Rabbit on Sunday. I really enjoyed it. Very dark humour, ranging from silly to thought provoking and uncomfortable in places.
Ignore bikebouy massive spoilers above !!!!!
I thought the VVitch was brilliant. Also heard a true story about a lighthouseman going nuts (was it on Antique's Roadshow?!) which made me want to see The Lighthouse even more!
Also Parasite is on at Vue next week.
I just looked at the Black Mirror. Delighted!
I just looked at the Black Mirror. Delighted!
Er, yeah. Of course. Welcome to STW.
The Goodies (remember them ?) did a brilliant episode where they accepted a job for "a little light housekeeping" when in fact it was "a little lighthouse keeping" I might watch that before I go. I doubt the film will have that joke. Peter Bradshaw gave it five stars which almost puts me off - he like really middle aged blokey macho films (I think JoJo Rabbit was too camp for him) he drooled all over The Irishman.
Ignore bikebouy massive spoilers above !!!!!
Now edited following someone reporting it. Cheers for that, we missed it at the time.
Remember, like the Yellow Pages, the Report Post button is not just there for the nasty things in life.
Just saw the trailer for Tenet when in seeing 1917. I’m really looking forward to it as it’s another Nolan mindbender.
Also Parasite is on at Vue next week.
Parasite is something really special.
Saw Ready or Not last week. Entertaining black comedy - Society cum Evil-Deadish. (Though mainly in style)
The Personal History of David Copperfield
Parasite is something really special.
Trying to persuade my son to see it with me - suitable for a 17 year old yoof?
Parasite, 17 year old offspring .... there's a gag in there somewhere
😉
suitable for a 17 year old yoof?
Some violence and a bit of cheeky stuff but it's a 15.
You'll be golden. I think. 🙂
Dune & GB Afterlife for me
