Looking forward to this one, but will wait until I’m actually in a quiet place (my front room) to watch it. The sound of people munching/texting/chatting is bad enough during a regular noisy film.

There was an article on the BBC the other day about noisy eaters being shamed into shutting up by this film. This can only be a good thing.

I saw it in a full screen in the Leicester Square Cineworld and, fortunately, the munching was mercifully quiet. There were people walking out with virtually full bags of popcorn 😀

Death of Stalin.

OK maybe it's late 2017 but I missed it at the cinema and just got it on DVD.

Saw Ready Player One last week - doesn't follow the book but none the worse for it (and I was a big fan). Want to watch it again, in 3D and watch the background. Good updating to capture current zeitgeist (Tracer!!)

😀

It was the subject of The People’s Playlist on Tom Ravenscroft filling in for Lauren on 6music this morning.

Watched " you were never really here" with Joachim Phoenix in and its was pretty good. Absolutely brutal and pretty bleak but one of the better films seen this year.

Funny, after I mentioned how good Claire Foy's American acting was in Unsane, to have watched Ready Player One with so many Brits putting on shit American accents! What's up with having US actors in a US film ffs??

Watched 'a quiet place' because of this thread. Very enjoyable movie to watch, but serious plot holes and questions. Kept me watching to the end and didn't seem to be long and that in my books is good enough.

Was really disappointed with 'A quiet place' . It's massively over hyped for an unoriginal alien invasion movie. Plot holes galore and frankly large parts of it are plain slow/dull. Sicario 2 looks a corker though !

They could have built a shelter beside the waterfall and lived not as stealth and instead of trekking for fish. 3 creatures in a few hundred square km's of area, yet appear in seconds, arms sharp enough to cut almost everything , but a car roof is impossible. I could go on.

- Perhaps the ground around the waterfall wasn't suitable for building a home?

- Given their hearing is so sensitive, they could be quite a long way away and still hear. Having said that, if their aim is to stamp out all noise-making creatures, they would most likely stay in an area where they have heard sounds until it has been cleared of said noise-making people.

- Sharp doesn't always equate to hard.

I agree, it's not a perfect film (I thought they played a little loose with the noise thing), but none of it really detracted from the film, IMO.

Saw 'You Were Never Really Here' - amazing film. The way close-ups, background noise, flashbacks and music were used was so... maybe not unique, but really clever and striking. Not like anything I've seen anyway. Very dark film, but excellent. Joaquin is superb as always.

Film called 'Thoroughbreds' was advertised before it. Also looks great.

Thoroughly enjoyed Avengers: Infinity War. An impressive baddie - well realised, and a big chunk of the MCU go hell for leather in this fairly bold Marvel film.

It was maybe just one notch too much in terms of characters and action but it was so well put together that it just draws you in. Some really great quieter moments too.

Loved the ending - though I fear it will be reversed in the next film quite quickly as it's a Kill Bill scenario.

They did a good job with making the characters feel less invincible than normal.

Will say no more.

Saw trailer for Hereditary when I went to see the (very average) A Quiet Place. This one looks like a good horror...

10/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Out next month I believe.

Shame about the title. I don't even know how to say it. hereditry hereditairy hêreditry herêditry ..?

The idea that this trailer:

was accidentally put up prior to a packed showing of Peter Rabbit in Australia is hilarious.

Looks ace, that one.

Well late to the party but an Odeon pass and some Rental DL's I'm back in the game!

Avengers - awesome bang crash laugh

Black Panther - good, nice role swaps and balance, plus Bilbo

Deadpool 2 - laughs all the way

Mollys Game - slick, fast, slow, Sorkin all the way - the opening monologue was perfect 🙂

I Tonya - Well Margot is great!!

3 Billboards - Wow!! want to love and hate them all at the same time - just before I watched it I heard Mayo's interview with Gandalf - how do you play the con man, you just play the man. Perfect direction for anyone is this film, play a human being and let the story do it's work.

Justice League - well no.

Fwiw I'm now reading "Ready Player One" and loving it. Glad I hadn't read it before seeing the film though as I think I'd have been disappointed by the adaptation.

Edit - Solo tomorrow night, feels like we're seeing it out of duty rather than desire though.

Solo - very enjoyable overall. Felt it was slightly top heavy with the best stuff in the first half.

It doesn't hit the highest Star Wars highs but is at least consistent and no real evidence of the Director fall-out on screen.

Characters are fairly well done, though I feel Han Solo himself didn't quite have enough screen presence for me.

Cinematography is excellent and the universe is suitably gritty and convincing with a really down-beat colour palette that is far removed from the others films. I really liked the tone of the film - a great balance of stuff for the kids and the older kids.

CGI is top drawer in that it blends perfectly into the practical environment. Music is Scrappy though, can't work out what it wants to be.

Oceans 8....

[Kermode] Well they looked like they had fun making it [/Kermode]

It's probably a testament to the fact Brad & George are good friends that they work so well and so fast together, this doesn't quite hit that, was a freebie preview screening so nothing lost but certainly more a catch it on Netflix kind of a film sadly

I really enjoyed 'Den of Thieves' - reminded me a bit of 'Heat', a slow-burning film - it is quite long! I see that there's a 'Den of Thieves 2' in the pipeline too, according to IMDB.

Some good suggestions here - gives me plenty to watch.

I watched Game Night last night. Not too taxing on the old grey matter (so ideal for me) - but just good fun and very funny in places.

Sicario 2

I thought this was damn good until about half way when it didn't capitalise on its setup.

Some good twists and turns but also some odd timing / plot issues especially towards the end... Helicopters, sun coming up, distance between them all didn't make a whole lot of sense.

Taylor Sheridan is a great writer and this film definitely continues the themes and tension of Sicario but doesn't quite deliver on its premise. Some of the plot strands feel like a they run to cheaply undramatic conclusions.

I enjoyed it the most when it was in thriller mode. The cartel threat had diminished - perhaps to reflect the changing Mexican tensions. But i missed the foreboding feel of the first.

The young girl was excellent. Didn't miss Emily Blunt to be honest as we've moved in a different direction.

Music and photography both excellent.

A sequel that didn't really need making that is actually not bad.

On Sicario 2 it would have been a good film if it wasn't following the original I think

The lack of the Emily Blunt/FBI strand of the first one killed it, though chance of redemption from Part 3

Had a sneaky morning off to see Mission Impossible: Fallout. Have a massive soft spot for these as they are so much better than the Bond films and always deliver.

Preposterous in the extreme but executed so well that it doesn't matter. A set of action sequences strung together with a bit of a convoluted plot, in a good way.

Some staggeringly good stunt work, with Crusie and the camera pulling off seemless action.

Along with Infinity War, two five star blockbusters in one year is unheard of.

It's a counterpart to Rogue Nation so helps if you've seen that recently.

Completely inverts the concept that a franchise gets worae as it goes along.

saw it yesterday.

like Rone, I have a soft spot for the MI films, they're always daft without being a XXX type daft, not Bourne, not bond, but somewhere in between.

action was great, stunts great and I really really have a thing for Rebecca Ferguson. (though I'm quite glad that they lay off the steam).

saw Extinction (another netflix film) yesterday too. has a lower budget, Netflix series feel to it. Reminded me a lot of Skyline, but then didn't, and that's all I'm going to say on that, aside from it was an enjoyable film.

I know it was discussed earlier in the thread, but I saw Black Panther on the weekend and what a disappointment.

Read an article about how important it was a black actors and directors and all that stuff, but by god, I bet they wish it had been a decent film with that much import.

Took itself far too seriously for a superhero film and the attempts at humour were quite embarrassingly bad. More like a DC film than a Marvel.

And so many WTF moments (like the giant Rhinos?!)... so glad I didn't pay for it.

Lovely costumes though.

In line with Rone on MI:Fallout. Considering any film like this will require suspension of belief / reality it was a really enjoyable action film. Some good humour, great action scenes and it still even kind of hung together from a plot perspective (big picture wise, obviously, not the mysteriously quick way they seem to be able to cross country and continental boundaries)

Got dragged along to see McQueen last night, not a film I would have chosen, but what an ambush it turned out to be. Totally brilliant and an amazing window in to the world of a flawed genius. I know nothing about catwalks or haute couture, but watching the way that McQueen stormed the fashion world and how hard he worked was breath taking.

Yeah I saw it a couple of weeks ago, after all the reviews I couldn't believe what a load of drivel it was. I think all the marketing and hype about it being an important black culture film really paid off, because it seams to have made people afraid to question it's quality. If I was black I think I would feel extremely patronised by the way it portrayed black and African culture.

I bought “A Prayer Before Dawn” on itunes this morning, but I know it will probably sit unwatched for a few weeks until I am in the mood for that type of film.

The accents!! Shocking.

And, the last line before the credits when they were at some kind of summit saying they were going to share (ahem) vibranium... wtf did that French(?) bloke say to make them all smirk? Couldn't understand it!

I've just watched that: Nice idea, but I thought it was pretty rubbish. The acting was terrible, with the lead guy being worst culprit: It was like watching a wooden spoon, and not one of those nice Le Creuset ones; more one of those cheap Ikea ones.

The above comments on BP are spot on. enjoyable enough film for what it was, but I kinda knew from the trailers, using Gil Scot Heron in the soundtrack that it was going to be a crass overcompensation for the media calling out hollywood 'whitewashing' movies. In a similar way that there were a remakes and sequels that gender swapped just for the sake of it.

It was a bit much. I actually think coming to america had less cultural stereotyping.

Antman and The Wasp.

saw it tuesday.

expected it to be really really crap, but it was raining and there was nothing else on.

it was silly, but actually quite good, providing you didn't take having a de-bigulator and a re-bigulator serioulsy.

I suspect now, I have a low bar for what is good though.

I saw a film last night that made Black Panther look good - The Green Lantern, was on Ch5. Luckily I didn't select Series Link so only half the film got recorded (they have a news/celebrity gos break in the middle, I forgot). Blimmin terrible.

Was there actually something called Killerwog? Lordy.

Staying in Merthyr, so its BPW and cinema week for me and jr.

Ant Man & the Wasp yesterday - pretty poor, seeing as Antman was actually a decent film, this was a mess. A load of Quantum Bollocks as Michael Douglas’s character would no doubt have said. Best thing was the cgi young versions of Douglas, Michelle Pfieffer and Larry Fishbourne!

Tonight - Unfriended: The Dark Web. See it! Most original horror I’ve seen in years. Yeah, its got plenty of silly bits, but it worked for me (in spite of the fat, cheesy smelling woman on her phone sat next to me. Moron). I’ve always said people are worse than most monsters films come up with (that’s not a spoiler btw!)(and a reference to the film, not the moron)

watched 'Upgrade' last night,

had a 7.7 rating, so thought it may be ok, even though the plot looked really bad.

yes, he plotline has netflix writing all over it, but it's one of the better ones, albeit a little predictable.

I'm not going to give anything away, but it's essentally, ine the near future, man has accident, is left quadriplegic, has an 'AI Uprade' which makes him betterer.

I quite enjoyed it. probably more of a 6 though.

I really enjoyed Black Panther as a fun sort of thing. It wasn't too deep but I think the big deal about it is that it doesn't have a muscled white guy as the saviour of the people and it doesn't show the Wakandans(?) as some sort of either third world country or mirroring existing cultural behaviour.

Add to that that the female roles were also not dependent on the men (ignoring the fact that the titular character was also king) I think it was a change from the norm in most hollywood action/superhero movies.

But... I also enjoyed it as a film as I said. It was silly but Marvel is silly.

Went to see MI: Fallout again.

Still loved it - especially the extended opening - when the music kicks in!

Being picky I think they could've trimmed the last sequence a bit - it goes on for a while and loses a bit of tension through repetition - but that really is from a second critical observation.

Easily one of the best /most satisfying action films ever made.

Just seen Tag.

Entertaining in a not having to use any of my brain kind of way, but if it didn't have Annabelle Wallis in it I'd have turned it off after 20 minutes.

4.5.

BP was very meh. Mostly ruined by all the "If you don't like it you must be racist" bullshit on social media.

Ant Man & The Wasp was very enjoyable.

The Equalizer 2 wasn't anywhere near as good as the first.

Mamma Mia 2 was better than expected, mainly because of Lily James. Phowar!

I did tell her to put it away. But it kind of baffled her. This is a woman who was bright enough to go and get food literally as the film started... then sit down and after 5 mins go “I don’t get this.” Moron.

Annnnyway, tonight we saw Jurassic World: Fallen Francise, sorry Kingdom and it was atrocious. Can’t believe Spielberg even let his name go on the end credits. Every step of the way was like, why..? nobody would do that! (eg. get into a cage with an unknown dino, yeah!). Treat the audience like complete idiots just so they can see dinosaurs fight. ughmph.

Mostly ruined by all the “If you don’t like it you must be racist” bullshit on social media.

No idea how that can ruin the film tbh

As I'm recovering from a heavy cold and still have a rattly chest, and the rest of the family are just getting to grips with their colds, another film was watched last night.

This time it was 'How it Ends'

tale of a guy who travels across the US to find his girlfriend after an 'event' happens.

netflix film, so sets and effects are decent. storyline is good, ending is a bit netflix and not very hollywood.

kinda like a much lighter 'the road' story. recent post apocalyptic environment comes across well, with some feeling it's the end, some not sure and holding out until it all blows over, and some oblivious. Plus of course, some of the nastier side of human survival.

but yeah, good enough as a sofa film, not gritty in the slightest and doesn't require too much thought.

I think your cold is making you delusional.

lol, thanks Drac.

I think anything that requires too much thinking is out.

That said anything that is part of the current batch of YA themed films is also out (read: teen who's always felt different, realises they are different, but in a good way that means they're more important than regular folk, and can save the world in the face of adversity, but finds love and has to make a tough choice.....).

I'd rather watch River City for my intellectual stimulation.
