Typically good start to the year.
Saw All The Money In The World and Molly's game this week at the flix. Enjoyed both for different reasons.
The former is the film where Ridley Scott replaced Kevin Spacey after the movie was in the can, when Spacey started getting accused of being a naughty boy.
They re-cast with Christopher Plumber to tell the story of billionaire John Paul Getty's refusal to pay his Grandson's kidnapping ransom.
Great film making and astonishing that they re-shot all of Spacey's part. And actually seamless.
Molly's game is an Aaron Sorkin talkathon set against an equally bizarre backdrop of a near-miss Olympic skier's turn towards running high stake poker, and ending up in trouble with the feds.
Based on true story that I'd never come across, and Sorkin's directoral debut. A bit too much info is spoken at warp speed but it's still an intriguing story.
Both worth your attention, and if even 50% of each film is true then even more staggering on reflection.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - next week.
(I think technically these films may have been released in very late 2017. Whoops. But not at my cinema.)
The Post is on my watch list.
Yes. That looks terrific. A
Spielberg has two films out shortly.
Three Billboards looks interesting... only problem is, I've seen a lot of adverts for it (including ahem, billboards) and usually over advertised films are a bit crap.
Only film I'm really looking forward to in 2018 is... The Incredibles 2! 🙂
Red Sparrow is on the want list for obvious reasons
Avengers Infinity war < no brainer
As in The Incredible
Deadpool 2
I see Fry has been replaced by Joanna Lumley at the BAFTAS.
Don't know what she'll be like but she couldn't be any worse.
Always thought Fry was an unfunny, unctious and patronising blob.
Annihilation out February. Cannot wait.
Natalie Portman. Alex garland. Win win
Oh yeah! and Deadpool er 2... sequels are never as good though are they...
Only film I'm really looking forward to in 2018 is... The Incredibles 2!
Me too. I’m also looking forward to seeing how much of a train wreck the Solo film will be. Sounds like things didn’t go too well on set. I love a good big budget film gone wrong.
Sicario 2 is due soon, can’t wait.
I suspect the summer will be another endless stream of reboots, comic book films and rebooted comic book films but I’ve seen a few interesting things on the horizon like The Irishman
New Wes Anderson film due out March (I think)
[/img]
And a new Maze Runner, due Jan..
[/img]
An new Star Wars movie in May..
[/img]
Nat Portmans Annihilation too..
[/img]
This might be good, not due until Dec..
[/img]
And X-Men spin offs, some rather odd Sea Monster movie, Jurassic Park continues, and animated Ghostbusters, and just so we can all criticise it before it’s even out.. a new Predator..
Black Panther is the first blockbuster and I think it’s got promise. Looks to be a good year.
Sicario 2 is due soon, can’t wait
Yes , this one's me got me dithering. Perhaps the most unexpected sequel of all time.
Sequelitis? I'm old and [s]confused[/s] cynical. Everything's looking and feeling more like a brand/franchise than ever. Will we see peak McMovie?
Ready Player One - but the trailer leaves me a bit concerned that they’ve ruined it
Annihilation out February. Cannot wait.
It's based on the first of a trio of books that's pretty difficult to grasp. My fear is that it'll bear scant relation to the themes that would be difficult to translate to film anyway. I don't think it'll be that good if I'm honest
Natalie Portman. Alex garland. Win win
Natalie's OK, Alex can be very hit and miss, bless him.
Tell me more about Annihilation - the trailer just looks like any other "bad monsters get hungry" type movie. Is there more to it?
Just back from Three Billboards...
Surprising, shocking and original. Terrific script, lots of black black moments.
Had an almost 'mellowed' Tarantino edge to it that was extremely gratifying.
Very clever moments that usurp script writing coincidences nicely.
Haven't seen a small town America film this rich in ages.
(I know there's a thread but I started this one before as a general film thread.)
It's based on the first of a trio of books that's pretty difficult to grasp
Agreed; keen to see the take that the director has on the book, when so much of it is descriptive. Whilst Arrival was a good film, it didn’t really reflect the source book, and the developing chrono-synclastical ability of the narrator.
</pseud’s corner>.
Whilst Arrival was a good film, it didn’t really reflect the source book, and the developing chrono-synclastical ability of the narrator.
Which makes me glad I don't read as much these days. The endless book vs film bores the hell out of me, the best books don't make the best films and the best films don't make for good books. The medium is too different.
I saw someone posting another maze runner up there, remember the comment that at some point the maze runners should bump to the the hunger games and maybe another couple of ya franchises and have that brief moment crossover maybe over a beer then run off to complete their mission/story arc
Had a mystery screening on Monday - the film turned out to be 'shape of water'. One of the strangest films I've ever seen. The whole film and storyline was just bizarre.
No mention of 'Darkest Hour' yet?
Saw it last night and enjoyed it very much. It's not perfect but I'd wholeheartedly recommend a watch.
The medium is too different.
I wasn’t complaining about the film treatment; I’m curious to see the interpretation of what I think is another pretty unfilmable book and hope it’s not just made into a “bad monster” trope.
Fair enough, just had a run of book readers going on about films recently (well it's a recurring thing)
Planning to get a cinema season pass when I get beck to the UK to make the most of being in a city for those dark long evenings

agreed, fantastic film, a must-see.
Bikebuoy - cheers, didn't know there was a Fahrenheit 451 production on the go. Odd sea monster movie would be Pacific Rim 2?
Legend - me too, really want it to be good but prepared to be disappointed.
Would be nice if we got an at least wrapped Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 by the end of the year. And Mega City One in production.
But if there was ever a most hyped release of the year...
The odd sea monster movie could be shape of water, although it's more of an amphibious man
In other niche news we have Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez) which may be good or may be another manga ruined forever, The House with a Clock in its Walls which sounds terrifically compelling, The Jungle Book - Third Time Lucky, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, a Transformers movie NOT directed by Michael Bay and [s]Princess Leia[/s] Mary Poppins Returns
And finally Mama Mia! which I'm sure we can all agree should be banned as a crime against humanity.
Also, Scarface? Really??
Ready Player One - but the trailer leaves me a bit concerned that they’ve ruined it
What makes you think that ? From what I've seen, it should be a cracker and follow the book pretty well
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - just seen it, damn excellent. very different feel from McDonagh’s other films, but darkly humourous and thought provoking. Sam Rockwell is so good in it. Loved it.
Very much enjoyed 'The Post'. A quite un-showy piece from Spielberg - detailing the Washington Post's expose of the Pentagon Papers - dodgy cover-ups of the Vietnam war.
Meryl Streep is always great, straddling the line of newspaper owner hob-nobber and fighting for the truth.
Ultimately fairly forgettable but still a well constructed and mature piece that leads nicely into Watergate related films like All the President's Men and Nixon.

All the stuff with cars flying through the air and the like doesn't sit right, also looked like he was in a 'normal' school? The full trailer looks better than the teaser though, some interesting sleeping quarters noted at the end.....
Western and Detective are two that look interesting to me. I doubt either will be on general release, hopefully Netflix will show them both.
Saw The Darkest Hour yesterday and thought it was wonderful - the best film I have seen in a long time.
One of the trailers was for Isle of Dogs (mentioned above) which looks very interesting too – even if just to enjoy the stunning animation/filming etc – it looks beautifully constructed.
i always make a point of seeing all the award contenders every year. still to see The Post which im looking forward to. Phantom Thread and The Shape of water which i am not so much. Three Billboards is great, Darkest Hour is all about the performance of one man rather than being a particularly good film. Dunkirk, fantastic. Lady Bird i saw this weekend, meh. but my favourite by far is Get Out.
enjoying Vue's £4.99 initiative at the moment. took the kids to see Coco and Early Man recently. both amazing.
Darkest Hour is all about the performance of one man rather than being a particularly good film.
But as the film is pretty much entirely about that man doesn't that make it a good film? I also thought some of the cinematography was wonderful – I liked the slow scrolling street scenes great (a fantastic way of conveying London still getting about its normal life despite what was unfolding around them) and some of the cut scenes in the lifts- the use of 'portrait' view with blackness to the left and right of the focus was great. AND! The colouring/lighting was wondrous at times (especially when in Buckingham Palace).
I agree 100% with you about Shape of Water though - it looks bobbins and I really can't bring myself to want to watch it despite the reviews it has been getting.
Another recommendation for Three Billboards here - absolutely superb.
Another thumbs up for 3 Billboards, very enjoyable film, its always good to get a real film in among the blockbusters.
Saw black panther last night, excellent movie. One of the best marvel flicks so far.
3 billboards....brilliant
Darkest Hour. Booooooooooriiiiing.
The Shape of Water. Just back from seeing it. I liked it a lot and it had some beautiful details in the props even when it went a bit too much Captain America .
If you are already a fan of del Toro, you will love it. Very much not bobbins 🙂
Yet another vote for 3 billboards. One of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time with some truly fantastic black comedy moments and amazing characters. The only negative thing I could find to say is the ending is comparatively weak against the incredibly strong first 80%
mahalo - what are the £4.99 details? I can't seem to find it listed on the Vue website
Probably deserves it's own thread... Incredibles II trailer is out. I am soooo excited about this film!!
Yes, thats the "Sneak Peak", the actual trailer is really short!
Yeah, me too.
I especially like the rubber spandex suits..
Saw Black Panther at a preview. Awesome film for many different reasons. Go see it.
Longer version.
Black Panther is ok and certainly worth a watch, but it's not great, there are better Marvel movies.
Saw black panther last night, excellent movie. One of the best marvel flicks so far.
Really? I agree with Dragon, it was okay as in the acting, characters, effects but the plot was quite rubbish I thought, worth a watch though.
SPOILERS: considering you know from the next Avengers movie trailer that T'Challa/black panther /the king doesn't die, and Infinity Wars will take place in Wakanda I thought they could have done more TBH with the plot. Let the Wakanda spies start attacking the world with their weapons or something just less predictable than what happened.
I also found two things really annoying, one Killmonger/son of uncle who challenged for the throne, took Klaue from Black Panther before delivering him dead, why not mention this when he rocked up. Then when the border tribe leader turned, why not mention the reason his parents were dead was down to the Uncle selling secrets to Klaue!
Also quite disappointed with the cut scenes too, they gave nothing extra then you already know from the trailers for the next movie!
I saw Black Panther last night and it was decidedly meh. Stunning visuals as usual but the story just didn’t draw me in. Despite what the critics are saying, not even close to being the best Marvel movie by a long shot, probably not even top 10 for me. 4/10.
Lady Bird is very good - Saoirse Ronan is excellent in it, but to be fair, the supporting cast, especially her mum and dad are all great too.
I though Black Panther was enjoyable, familiar storyline & some obvious plot devices shoehorned in, with the twist of it being african centric + with some strong uncompromising female leads, the only 2 white guys in the film being sidekicks, which shouldnt be a big thing in 2018, but it actually is for a comic-based hollywood blockbuster!
Also helped by a decent supporting cast, including a bad guy that wasnt CGI ! Some good social commentary without being preachy. story let it down a bit.
I saw Early Man with the kids on Friday, historical innacuracies aside it was good fun
mahalo – what are the £4.99 details? I can’t seem to find it listed on the Vue website

Purchase a ticket for a 2D film in a standard seat and you will pay only £4.99.
Went to see The Greatest Showman last night!! big camp musical extravaganza! a total shonky cheese fest but i absolutely loved it. proper film!!
When you walk out the cinema with a big grin on your face and realise its still there when you get home you know its a good un!
To think my favourite movies of recent times were things like Tyrannosaur & Dead Mans Shoes, i have reached an age where this is what i want from a film... foot tapping joy! and any father with 2 girls story is gonna tug at the heart strings too.
Saw The Shape Of Water today. Bit of a del Toro fan anyway but loved it. It's probably the most del Toro-like film he's made (if that makes sense?). A visually stunning, charming, dark, funny, magic realist fairy tale. Some great performances - would love to see a film like this (ie - not standard awards fare) get some Oscars recognition. Only real criticism is that the ending is obvious and flagged up in almost the first scene of the film, but in the context of the film's style and intent it's pretty much a meaningless criticism anyway.
VERY much makes up for Pacific Rim.
Seeing this thread pop back up, disappointed to find that Annihilation got pulled from UK theatrical release - Netflix instead.
I saw Black Panther on Friday: I enjoyed it but I didn't think it was a good as people are saying. The "James Bond" Q segment was just cringe worthy: I'm sure the makers will say it was intended to be humourous, or an "ode" to Bond, but it really spoiled it, for me.
I also thought the segment where it relocated to the US was where it deteriorated into generic, non-sensical car chases. That bit was also too "Bond", with the Casino scene completely ripping off Skyfall.
Overall, I'd say it was a 3.5, possibly a 4/5
As an aside I caught the 2017 Snowman (from the Jo Nesbo book) film which had had atrocious reviews.
I couldn't believe how bad it was - something must've gone wrong in the production. 3 times Oscar winner and Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker couldn't salvage it. Looks like they rushed the shooting to me.
There are flashbacks, subplots and characters that just seem to get written in and out. Val Kilmer appears to have gone off the boil too - some dodgy dubbing and plastic surgery. An odd subplot involving the Oslo bid for Winter Olympics for no logical reason at all. A random half-baked sex scene that pops up at the worst of moments. Red Herrings that make no sense. The list goes on.
Scorsese was down to direct it - I'm pretty sure he'd have made it work, though his name is still attached to it the poor man.
The cinematography is excellent though and one or two scenes did have some suspense. But what a mess. A proper so bad it's bad.
GF loves the book.
Seeing this thread pop back up, disappointed to find that Annihilation got pulled from UK theatrical release – Netflix instead.
I was initially worried about that, the last Cloverfield was a turd that got sold to Netflix on the cheap - the 'straight to DVD' for the new era - BUT, Annihilation might be different - it's supposed to "too intellectual and too complicated" so Paramount wanted changes to make it more mainstream - the producers refused and had final cut, so Paramount dumped it to Netflix. So it could actually be a better film for it - but then I wouldn't put it past Paramount to invent the whole thing to sell a turkey. You can't trust pre-release reviews any more anyway - Ghost Busters got good pre-release reviews, as did The Last Jedi, glowing ones actually, but it's scores have dived since release.
Anyway, it's out in 2 weeks on Netflix.
the last Cloverfield was a turd
Certainly was!
I hope there's some Minion related film planned for this year.
Ah that reminds me, I must go out and buy some bananas.
I really enjoyed Black Panther. Would like to get to the cinema more frequently this year. If I can avoid buying Coke & popcorn then it's only £3.99 on a Monday at Vue and that's my day off so no excuses really.
New series of Film 2018 starts tonight. No Bazza Norman, so not saying it'll be any good, but it's on.
Well this looks a crap load better than justice league
(Having young kids is a brilliant excuse to watch the good kids TV, the wife & I will be arguing over who gets to take the kids to this one!)
Anyone wanting to give their thoughts on Ready Player One then? All I can say is that most of my fears were realised, good soundtrack though
I seen it yesterday. It wa what I expected a family film so the story was very easy, straight forward to follow with a bit of humour. Visually it was stunning, absolutely a visual overload, I lost count of reference to films, TV and games. Soundtrack as you say sound a great soundtrack. I enjoyed it but I was expecting a family film not anything complex.
Ready Player One is a film to watch rather than a film to think about. Great references to all sorts of things, I'm sure the DVD will have a bonus edition where someone talks through every scene with all the references they've got going on in there. Totally unchallenging and has gaping plot holes but why worry about them when you can just let it wash over you. (FWIW I'm not familiar with the book so had zero expectations in that regard)
If you enjoyed the movie at all, you’ll absolutely love the book.
Thats probably my downfall of course, read the book before I knew there was going to be a movie - wish it had been the other way around. It was fine to watch (3D IMAX didn’t hurt) and generally good fun. I do feel there was a few wee touches that could’ve improved things - even the way “Ready Player One” appears on screen at the start. There are also many bits that would’ve been rubbish in a movie (basically all the challenges) so understand that it had to be ripped up
Never spoli a good movie by reading the book first.
If you enjoyed the movie at all, you’ll absolutely love the book.
I read the the book first too, and was waiting for bits to happen that didn't, but some of the replacement scenes were better IMO.
Thought Simon Peggs part was a bit underplayed though, as that character is quite pivotal in the book.
Best bit for me were the sets (mainly because I built most of it 😜)
Will probably take my boy too see Ready Player One, expecting the worse myself.. Al Murray liked it on Film '18 so it might be bearable!
Saw Unsane, the Steven Soderbergh film, last week. Was pretty good, started as a terrific psychological thriller and went a bit straight horror-ish towards the end, but still very good. Mainly cos of Claire Foy - she was brilliant - I had to look up afterwards if she was English, as her American accent is the best I've heard on film from a Brit. It was like she became American, rather than just put on an accent.
(Can't believe we've STILL got copy and paste issues!)
Went to see A Quiet Place yesterday. Unusual post-apocalyptic thriller, where making any loud noise will kill you. Has replaced 3 Billboards as film of the year so far.
Also looking forward to seeing A Quiet Place - sounds very good listening/reading reviews so far.
Saw Ready Player One - pure indulgence for Spielberg that. So nerdy, aimed at gamers only I think. Hey, it's 2045 or whatever and the nostalgia for the 80s is worse than it is now! Sod that for a future! Didn't hate every minute of it, the character with Deadpool's barman's voice was funny.
Watched 'Detroit' on a flight the other day. Hell fire that is some depressing shit... very good like, but ill be watching Greatest Showman again on the way home!!
Also watched 'Molly's Game' which was pretty good too.
Also looking forward to seeing A Quiet Place – sounds very good listening/reading reviews so far.
Looking forward to this one, but will wait until I'm actually in a quiet place (my front room) to watch it. The sound of people munching/texting/chatting is bad enough during a regular noisy film.
A Quiet Place - one part Shyamalan (the good ones), one part Hitchcock and one part Spielberg.
Not has a mainstream film played with an audience's expectations of cinema for as long as I can remember. All I want to say is - minimal dialogue and maximum visual story-telling are fused to produce a high concept narrative that doesn't forget character and nuance, at least in the early stages.
You will need a rock-solid audience for this but it cleverly draws you in with some neat tricks.
Sure there are contrivances and familiarity but they are staged with such edge of the frame glee that you can't help to get lost in the suspense, and forgive its occasional low budget by the numbers scares. Emily Blunt does a lot with a role that doesn't offer much in the way of dialogue.
Very much this years' Get Out for me, if not quite as multi-layered.
I feared the worst with our audience but the film seemed to shut them up pretty much instantly. Quite staggering.
Don't read any reviews at all, or even watch the trailer!
