Well there are loads of you walking around Canary Wharf today, doing some last minute sightseeing are/were you ?
😀
Back I would have thought
Just actually read the magazine, it says number on the back of jersey.
About half of our club riders (we have 60 riders tomorrow) will be aiming for sub five hours. Look for the blue TCC jerseys. Our "steady" team will be aiming for sub six and a half.
How many club riders average 20mph over a 100 miles? The training group of my club would but they represent a small percentage of the total club members.
It's pretty easy on closed roads. No need to stop for lights or junctions, no being held up by cars.
We averaged 27mph for the first hour last year before knocking it back a bit, still did the 86 mile ride (86 miles as they cut out Box and Leith Hills) in sub 4hrs.
27mph for the first hour is impressive crazy-legs. If I ever I do the Pru 100 I'll have to make sure that I temporarily replace my compact chainset ...... my 50/12 top gear ratio has me spinning like the clappers at 25mph, at least it feels like it, I wouldn't want to that for an hour 🙂
Yeah but at that point the weather was still OK, it was before the torrential downpours, group of 4 as a club team, all very evenly matched, we had an early start so clear roads and we did get a bit carried away with it all!
I was up in town today for the FreeCycle thing, just using hire bikes. Took my Mum along, she's not ridden a bike in about 20 years. Once she'd got used to the handling of the Boris Bike she was OK and enjoyed it up til it got really busy when she couldn't really cope well with all the stop/start cycle traffic. I stayed up in town for a bit longer and went out round the eastern end of the route which seemed a lot quieter and then nipped back across town to go to the Rapha Cafe which was full of Ride Londoner's all buying shiny new kit for tomorrow!
In bed, alarm set for 5am. I know I should be asleep but absolutely wired!
Good luck to y'all for tomorrow - if you see a fat lad in a blue Adidas top, give me a wave!
Good look Lads !!!
All set up at Newlands, bit of mist, light wind, nice temperature. Gonna be a fast day again I reckon!
I lasted 10miles where a broken spoke and damaged rear wheel stopped me in my tracks. Gutted is not the word
Good luck lads I'm on Giggs hill green in Thames ditton - washing car and bike fetteling, feeling glum and jealous
Thanks for the cheer Nick. Held onto the first group until halfway up Leith Hill, we chased them down to. Box Hill but they got away. Not enough workers to bring them back. Finished in the second bunch in 4:06. Phew!
Mostly a great day with some really nice weather however spoiled a bit with a crash - i normally defend sportive riders standard of riding (at least in terms of it not being as bad as their reputation - However no more! I, and 6 others in the first group got taken out by a bellend taking a selfie. Bike was rideable at least but my arse was hanging out my shorts - fortunately not as bad as Peraud in the tour but bad enough! The selfie taker was i think a member of triathlon club (a black and red jersey cant remember the name) unfortunately couldnt make it back to the front group to call him a c£&@ although the incentive of doing that made me keep pushing on and ended up with a shade under 4.15 which id have been happy with before
Rider down on Leith Hill. Air ambulance in attendance.
🙁 re rider down
My official time was 5:19, which I'm well chuffed with as I ain't no racing snake!
Done... Well and truly done in fact! I'm toast... Best part of 10kg overweight right now doesn't help, neither does the lack of time in the saddle. Started just after 7, managed the first 60 miles until Leith Hill at 22.5avg, but it all went very south from there... I was properly slow up Leith Hill and Box Hill! Anyway...
Predicted a time of 5:30 based on everyone saying I'd be much quicker than I thought I would be, crept in at 4:59 which brought a tear to my eye! 😳
Was in an absolute world of pain, as you might expect from very little saddle time and being a stone and a half overweight, but it's done and I can tick it off the bucket list! 🙂
EDIT: Best part is that some of the "more serious" riders I know, shall we say, those that do 150-200 miles week in week out and think they're a bit tasty, have only just broken 5hrs too! Feeling quite smug right now... 😀
What's your age, height and weight mboy?
You trying to hook up?
Didn't realise there was an event on this weekend and am down here with the family visiting friends. Managed to get caught up in traffic jams and road closures for 3 hours on our way out of the city.
Bloody cyclists 😉
Saw a mate's FB post saying he'd done it in 4.33 . Good weather is making for some very quick times. Gutted I didn't get a place this year. 🙁
there were some quite efficient pelotons out there today. Sadly I couldn't seem to jump on annoys them, so pretty much solo'd round for 90% of it. Still a bloody good day though!
37 seconds off a sub 5. Great day though, really enjoyed it.
F me that was quick. Normally ride 14- 15 mph average time, with a couple of rides just over 16mph. Managed the 100 miles in 5:43 so about 17.5 mph! Did the first 40 miles in just under 2 hrs too. Everyone who said it would be faster than normal were right. Seemed to be loads of accidents tho. Feel sorry for the guy on the ground just 10 miles from the finish
237km for me, well chuffed. Rode in from Redhill, and then back to Redhill afterwards. What a cracking day it was. Have decided I like climbing though - it was too flat! Found myself longing for the climbs!
ok, so I was hoping to get under 5h30, and I did... snuck home in 4h19m! I was more than a bit surprised, and the last 20 was definitely tough going, but very happy now! 😎
and, yep, I like the climbs too - blasted a load of people on Leith and Box and nobody overtook me on either 🙂
The Boy got round, phew. 😀 He had a shock at Leith Hill with the gradient so informed him that it's the highest hill in the South! Cycled there and back which added 30K on.
4:19, shouldn't you have been in the race that started after !?! I don't mind hills. I'll happily grind up and will never get off. It just can't seem to get any speed up 'em. Didn't like the km signs they put out, that messed with my head, went past the 10 miles to go then there was a 15 marker, but saw it was km!!
Thanks for the cheer Nick. Held onto the first group until halfway up Leith Hill, we chased them down to. Box Hill but they got away. Not enough workers to bring them back. Finished in the second bunch in 4:06. Phew!
No worries! You were going well, your tracker was playing up and showed you still at Kingston, so I'd not expected to see you that far up. considering your recent saddle time to be up with the lead group was excellent. 4:06 is insane!
Mr Woppit got a selfie with me, didn't spot any other members. Good fun fixing bikes. Crash victims and dodgy mechs mainly!
Just got over five and a half hours but stupidly stopped at newlands and got caught behind crash at leith hill. Guy looked in a bad way so hopefully he's fine, there was a crash just after the finish line as well. Surprised there weren't more with the mix of fast riders and inexperienced riders, healing vibes to all.
Finish line is always a risky one, mates all sprinting it out. All knackered, never been in that sort of situation, sit up as they cross the line then look round and BANG. Or idiots stopping and turning round or switching violently as they pull over to wait for others and taking out anyone following.
and yep agreed, 4:06 is smashing - excellent work! 😯
Going to stop reading this thread as it makes me feel slow 😉
Some very red faces in Canary Wharf this afternoon. Having ridden out with my mates this morning, we crashed out in Canada Sq watching the big screen and watching some of the finishers riding through CW looking slightly worse for wear.
Hot today wasn't it.
Wish you all a very settled nights sleep and don't forget ...
Wear that free top you've got in the morning to work won't you 😉 😆
Does anyone know what happened to the crash victim at Leith hill? I was sitting at the side of Portsmouth road in Kingston this afternoon when I got back and heard a rider saying that they had seen showing having their chest pumped at the bottom of the hill, which sounded concerning.
Heart attack I believe and unfortunately didn't make it by the sound of the police when I went past. It was certainly and long delay, so the services tried their best. Massive downer on what was a good day.
What's your age, height and weight mboy?
Very personal question! But since I'm not shy... 35, 5ft10 and 83kg. Ideal weight for me is about 73-74kg, though if I wanted to be a pro cyclist, at my height I'd be looking to knock another 5kg off that again!
Well I started off great...then got cramp in both legs before the Surrey hills section...so I was very slow doing the 2 pedal glide.......big thanks to the single track cheering squad at the top of leigth hill...cheered me right up
Finished in 5:20....so I'm pretty happy......could have got in the 4hr zone ...without the cramp
Great day tho...well done to all
5:12 for me which I was very pleased with until I read the above postings.
The quick (for me)time was a bonus, but the highlight was closed roads, what a joy!
Just found out a customer of mine did it in 4:03!!! 😯
He was in the first wave off, on a blue Planet X (will get him off it and on something decent soon!) with Reynolds wheels if anybody was riding with him... His time up Leith Hill would have troubled many of the pro's!!!
Pretty sure I rode with him for much of the ride. My time up Leith Hill was why I didn't stick with him to the end. 83rd overall according to the preliminary results. Training was three club rides and two circuit races (in fairness Tuesday's was an E123). Plus Ibuprofen and a wrist guard.
4:40 for me which I was pleased with given I had a puncture that cost me 10 minutes and set off after 7am so was going faster than most but there weren't many willing to share the wind.
awesome day.
We were working at Pyrford Cricket club today and had a great day. Respect to everybody, that was a warm one.
What a blast! Was doing domestique duties for a lady friend, we finished in 4:43 .
Only complaint about the organisation is no beer tent at the end!
I finished in just over 6 hours which I was happy with considering I felt a bit under-prepared before the ride.
Not sure I will do another, it felt like there were too many people of mixed abilities on the road and I saw some really, really poor and dangerous cycling. I saw at least 4 people being loaded into ambulances after pretty bad crashes and there must have been 8 other, less serious crashes that I saw as well as countless near misses.
On the entry form, I estimated my time at 6 and a half hours so started at 8:20. Perhaps I should have put a faster time so I got an earlier start and was surrounded by more experienced cyclists?
I also thought the hubs and drink stops were pretty poor considering how many people were expected. I only stopped twice as the other stops were queuing 30 or 40 deep when I got there. On both occasions, there was no food left and the second stop had even run out of water!
All in I enjoyed it, you cant knock riding through London on closed roads with crowds cheering you on but the stuff mentioned about has left me with mixed feelings about it.
6:32 and Leith Hill was closed by the time I got there (8.21 start).
There was the aftermath of a couple of crashes on the way round but not too bad I thought. I didn't see much numptyness but then I wasn't pushing for a fast time and everyone else around seemed to be regarding it as a long steady ride, not a race. There were times I was quicker than people around me but could get through fine, and times I was slower but there was plenty of space for faster riders to get through.
I enjoyed it despite the pain of underpreparedness - a fun day out on closed roads.

Glad there's a couple of other mortals posting their times! 5:39 chip time for me, including three long toilet stops due to apparent erm, issues!
Very pleased, was planning on training for sub 6hrs then bought a house to renovate!
It was a great day. Loved every minute of it. Well organised, although the 2 hubs that I stopped at were a bit chaotic. I finished in 5h47mins but missed Leith Hill due to the poor guy in the link above. Totalled 96.3 miles in the end.
I mentioned it the last time we met but Nick is starting to look like a bit of a badman with the facial hair.
There were some very silly tired, overweight people walking their bikes up a slight incline. At 37 miles...
I let them know how far we'd got. Don't know if they re-considered their game plan.
Ironically, the most amusing tshirt of the day: "Fat Lad At The Back". On some VERY fat lads. Most of whom were faster than me. 😯
Whilst I probably would have hammered it too for a fast (ish) time, its a shame that those who did, missed all the lovely scenery, on what was such a perfect day.
(BTW Mboy, I was only asking your age etc as most of us are probably far above our racing weights, but can get a better understanding of your achievement knowing you're 35 and not 55.)
5:43 for me, planned on 6 1/2 hours, secretly hoped for 6, but for a fat bloke in his 50's that was fast.
Sorry to hear about the bloke on Leith Hill, seems to be one every year 😥
I mentioned it the last time we met but Nick is starting to look like a bit of a badman with the facial hair.
😆
Better than looking like a 12 year old!
ronically, the most amusing tshirt of the day: "Fat Lad At The Back". On some VERY fat lads. Most of whom were faster than me.
You know that's a clothing brand aimed at the larger cyclist? There were some proper chunky folk out there, but good on em for being out there!
Hooli
I had 6.5hrs on my entry and started at 7.18. My mate predicted 6hrs 20mins and started at 7.30, so I think their allocation of start times may be a bit arbitrary.
If the "more experienced" riders started early, then the 2 or 3 I saw being treated on the road early on (even still in London) would have left before me, so that's no guarantee of safety. I did find that not many people used the whole of the road ie the RHS, so following a tip from a previous poster I keep on that side through most of London and kept out of trouble and managed to keep my speed up.
Regarding the chunky riders- I'm no slim jim and it was quite surprising being rapidly overtaken by people who you'd initially look at and dismiss.
I carried extra water and hoped not to stop so wasn't worried about them, partly in case they were out of supplies by the time I got there and partly to save time.
Well I don't know about anyone else ..but my legs are proper knackered today ....
I love pain....lol
The Boy mentioned yesterday (aka my son) went on a plane today to France for, yes indeed, more riding!
ired, overweight people walking their bikes up a slight incline. At 37 miles...
I let them know how far we'd got. Don't know if they re-considered their game plan.
What, like walk up what they had to to conserve energy and ride the rest?
I spent about an hour at the finish and was far more impressed with the one who hard clearly worked hard to ride 100 miles than the sportive heroes
If anyone saw a rider sitting on the edge of Portsmouth road in Kingston drinking beer after finishing the ride, that was me.
While I was there I saw quite a few larger riders heading down towards Kingston. I very much doubt any of them would have made it up any of the climbs without pushing, but when I saw them it was 85 miles into a ride, it was 1-2 pm and they were cracking on. Instead of wondering whether they had pushed or not, I applauded a little bit louder than I applauded the rest.
We had a lovely ride in the Purbecks, followed by several hours in the pub with Charlie the Bikemonger.

Sortable results if anyone is interested in how they stacked up...
Are those results missing some data? Only 18969 results there. Thought there was supposed to be about 26,000 riding?
Can't get the link to work, but just out of the first 100 results on the ridelondon site, I can see 22 non starters. so that might explain it?
So I was one of those 'larger' riders yesterday..
Well, I thought I was until I saw a few people who were a fair bit bigger than me..
Anyways, Strava says 6hrs 44mins (moving time) which is basically what I hoped to achieve.
My chip time was 8hrs 40mins, which considering I spent an hour at the bottom of Leith hill (yes, I know why and I'm pretty saddened to know someone never made it home) and probably another 20mins + waiting behind other accidents I guess my chip time is irrelevant.
I messed up my hydration/nutrition a bit toward the end, I think the warmer weather sneaked up on me because I expected to finish before it warmed up, and really suffered(cramp + other weird pains) over the last 10-15 miles.
I agree with the other comments re - shocking riding and accidents, I saw several very poorly looking people, including one girl near Hampton court who was laying under a blanket, and another guy on the way out of Box Hill sporting a collar/spine board combo.
As for the route - I ended up walking a couple of hundred metres up Newlands, mostly due to the volume of riders getting off in front of me. I walked a fair bit of Leith, again due to congestion/incidents.
I rode all of Box Hill (easy compared o the others) and walked the last hundred metres up Wimbledon hill (was knackered by then!)
It was an amazing event, and I'll be entering the ballot again next year - I think with a bit of weight loss/more training I could/should crack 6 hours.
Have downloaded male and female finish times, run them through some custom SAS code# and now have stats for all of the clubs who took part. If anyone wants any summary of their club, drop me a line (email in profile). If you want to know where you ranked personally, do likewise.

Jam Bo, is there any way to download that spreadsheet? I am probably being dim, thanks for posting anyway - very interesting!

changing the link to the above worked for me.
Excellent, I got it sorted in fact. Cheers 🙂
They have named the rider who died on Leith Hill. Condolences to his family and friends.
Particularly 😯 to me - as the article says he was a well known and respected local referee in the Reading area, and was one of my tutors and mentors when I started out refereeing many years ago.

Massive kudos to the bigger/older people doing this ride. I saw a fair few when I paused my XC ride for a bit on Headley Heath to watch the riders go past. It is a real challenge and achievement for those guys.
For the racing snakes its just an opportunity to smash out a time and is all a bit meh from a spectators point of view.
Great times everybody, and glad the weather was kind this year!
For the racing snakes its just an opportunity to smash out a time and is all a bit meh from a spectators point of view.
Bit harsh - even at 7am through London I waved and said hi to those who came out so early. Same for the crowds in Dorking - and I was turning myself inside out at the time chasing the front group! I may have been in a minority, mind.
And I have absolute respect for anyone of a larger build who finished in any time. I think their achievements are much more important than mine. Time on saddle says a huge amount about attitude and resilience. So well done to all who entered. Roll on next year...
Ride photos are up at marathon-photos.com, my trying hard to get up a hill face is not pretty 😳
Looking at entering for a charity next year, do I need to enter via he same ballot?
Any pointers appreciated.

contact the charity you want to ride for, they have guaranteed places and don't have to enter the ballot.
Thanks, Jam bo 🙂
