Don't know whether to get this or not I loved Ovlivion. Might wait a bit for the price to drop.

I'm off Thursday and Friday and way weighing up whether to buy this or COD. The video up there has persuaded me to wait til Friday and buy Skyrim.

Will there be a playable demo? maybe its wrong to say but the videos make it look boring and I like RPGs...

Well I'm getting it for [s]christmas[/s] the event that shall not be named, so no spoilers please. besides I need to build a faster PC to actually run it at a decent speed. Currently replaying oblivion to whet my appetite.

Sounds like they may have dumbed down some of the geeky features. "What do you mean I can't spend 3 hours sneaking in the oak and crosier to level up?"

Geeky features? You mean they've closed some of the loopholes that allow you to cheat?

Got it on pre-order from Amazon, not Steam this time as it's quite expensive there. Based on how much Oblivion ate into my spare time, I'm a bit concerned about the impact this is going to have on winter base training!

no cheating is messing around with the console and mods, using the game mechanics is a bit different. Spending hours practicing MTB moves on your front street instead of learning it all on the trail isn't cheating is it? Is using a turbo all winter then beating your mates up the hills next summer cheating? unfair advantage possibly but not cheating
🙂

PS if we are getting all technical about it it I'm not too impressed with the mechanics in fallout3, you can upgrade a skill to high level without ever using it, that's not right is it? I've heard rumours skyrim has similar levelling to FO, not been reading too much on it tho.

Received mine from Amazon today. On installation, it ties itself to your Steam account, which is fine, but then goes on to say... "Skyrim cannot be installed yet because it is not yet released". Cheeky buggers!

I assumed you were talking about entering sneak mode, facing a corner then putting a rubber band around the controller stick and leaving it overnight. Which would be a ace if you could do things like that with biking 🙂

Oh FFS! I hate this shit, I have an offline games PC coz I don't want to faff around with windows security updates and other guff. Why can't you just buy a game that works? Oh and steam can be a right old PITA even if you are online.
facing a corner then putting a rubber band around the controller stick and leaving it overnight
still not cheating, your character is practicing even if you aint there to see it 🙂

not AFAIK, when I bought HL2 I asked th guy in the shop can I play this with no internet connection he said "yes" wrong!

As expected it's garnered excellent reviews on IGN & Gamespot. Gamespot has a live stream of game play going on - looks really, really good.

I can see the frequency of my winter mountain biking dipping off!

Had a quick go round a friends house, it seems pretty good but I'm not really into RPGs. Seems like a huge improvement over Morrowind which is the only Elder Scrolls I've played.

So, what, the game requires Steam? Wow. Is that a common thing these days? (I think the last boxed PC game I bought was Gabriel Knight III so I'm a bit out of touch)

This is the first one I've bought outside of Steam that actually requires it. Generally I don't mind Steam, it's a good way to get introduced in particular to indie games.

OK so I came home to find Skyrim had arrived a day early and haven't managed to get a conversation out of hubby since he started playing at about 5pm. Apparently I can expect to have a weekend of "me time" doing whatever I want, as long as it doesn't involve either him or the TV in the sitting room!

Wish I could ride at the moment!

Someone I worked with told me while at uni FF7 came out a couple of guys from their group of friends dissappeared for a week, completely dropped off the social radar, no-one heard from them, someone called round to their house to check they were still alive, "yeah just been on the playstation"

🙂

have realized that i will need to carry my 360 with me to the game shop tomorrow
so you can play the 360 version offline? just PC users who suffer, what a gyp! that's windows-ist that is.

For PC users struggling with frame rates, here's a tip. For some reason, vsync is enabled by default and can't be changed in game, which causes tons of mouse lag. Here's the fix...

"To disable VSync in Skyrim, add iPresentInterval=0 to the bottom of the [Display] section of the Skyrim.ini file in the \Users\[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim directory"

Also, if you're running CrossfireX (like me) then disable it as, yet again with a major release, there's negative scaling at work. Apparently a new CAP is "being worked on"...the ATI driver team on the ball as usual 🙄 . I've only played a few minutes but it looks good so far.

Help me out here.

Do I need Skyrim?

I enjoyed Dragon Age, but Oblivion left me cold. For that reason I've not really paid it much attention and know nothing about the Elder Scrolls series mythology.

What do other readers think?

Cougar if you just fancy a new game to play I could send you Morrowind (for PC). I've had it sat around for ages and I'm never gonna play it again so it may as well get some use..

I appreciate the offer, but I'll decline I think. Whilst I'm all for retro gaming, something that's like Oblivion only older doesn't really have much appeal. (Also, I think my OH might actually own it, I vaguely remember seeing it in the cupboard.) Thanks anyway, though.

On the xbox 360 is it essential that you get the update patch?

Mine doesn't have internet access at the moment either, and I don't want to cart it down to the shops for an update, well not if it can be helped anyway... 😉

Isn't it. (-:

See, that sort of thing is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I think it's cool that the game engine actually makes that sort of left-field thinking possible. On the other, it's a bit crap that they stand there like, well, NPCs whilst you do it rather than kicking your head in.

Shame about Crossfire X - to be expected though. Almost makes me glad I dropped a HDD on one of my cards, shorting it...
What card are people saying is minimum for shiney bling? Can't trawl through gaming forums at work really.

Wait, that means STW is an addiction. I've rationalised my reasons for being on here and see it as a special case... I digress...

I enjoyed Dragon Age, but Oblivion left me cold. For that reason I've not really paid it much attention and know nothing about the Elder Scrolls series mythology.

Is the levelling anything like the stupid setup in Oblivion? I wasted 30 hours playing the game to realise I'd got a monumentally flawed char. I then had to spend ~200 hours fannying about to get a decent chat stats set up.

It's completely counter intuitive and I suspect only there to annoy people like me.

As for FF7 - I lost the weekend it came out and a coupla days holiday. I got to the final boss in ~67 hours seriously underequipped. I then had a monumental +4hour fight throwing everything at it until I was defeated.

I started again, went stat chasing (Crashed gelnika for the win) and went back to the final boss with 200+ in each stat ('cept luck) and whalloped him in about 2 minutes (with Kotor).

Back in the days I was single and childless....

I've not got the game yet, concerned my 3 year old pc might struggle a bit, but my all account the leveling system is a lot better. You're not forced into a picking a type of character at the start and you get additional perks when you level up, allowing specialization. That and a lot of the enemies now dont level up when you do, so it makes things more worthwhile.

Glittergary, no it's not essential you have the patch. I've been plating it all day on my internetless 360 just stopped for food. I'm told the patch makes it much better, but to be honest I've not encountered any glitches. Internets being connected in a few weeks so will see.

I've been trying to work out the cheapest way to get this! My laptop meets the min. reqs but has serious overheating issues on the GPU so I suspect it'll just keep overheating if I get skyrim. I hope they've sorted it so that creating a tank doesn't just own everything!

catflees - Cheers for the update mate, I didn't want to fork out the money only to have an unplayable game all weekend, that would be torture!

Oh, and chvck - Get an xbox 360, Fallout 3, New Vegas and GTA 4 and that's the next year of your life sorted/ruined, all for less that £200 quid. Bargain. 😉

Been fantastic so far, I like the level up screen. It makes it clearer what will happen should you increase that stat. It reminds me of the way 'skills and attributes' are presented in Fallout New Vegas. I'm getting well skilled with both single handed weapons and ranged weapons, if you liked Oblivion you will enjoy this.

Only gripe can't get the weapons to 'favourite' on the D-pad.

If I had the money I'd buy the Special Ed too. Like all expensive special edition games they get reduced fast. When I was working in a games shop the RRP on the last street fighter game special edition was £69.99 on ps3, it was £15 on play not so long ago. The art book you get looks really nice.

Twist gently in one direction, when the pick gets trapped you need to adjust it in the same direction. If the pick starts to break exit the screen. When you go back pick is good as new.

Can you hotkey your d-pad? I can't work it out 🙁

catflees.it seems that you can only use the up/down on the d pad for hot keying items e.t.c then you use either left or right triggers for which hand you want to put the weapon/spell in.it is taking me some time to adjust,as i'm used to oblivion. this game is fantastic though 😀 am still on level 1,but have just vanquished some criminal scum bandits from a bridge (the bandit chief was very tough to beat/had to dual wield swords) 😀

You can equip either a weapon and a shield. Or a weapon and a spell from what I can tell.

Lockpicking is very similar to Fallout 3 and New Vegas, rather than oblivion. Tried to play it on our CRT TV in bedroom I can't make the text out. You really need HD for this game, day off tomorrow and my girlfriends working all day 🙂

I picked a fight with a mammoth

Mrs Grips: Ooh I need mammoth tusk.

*equips bow*
*pling*

Mammoth: ROAR CHARGE STAMPEDE!
Mrs Grips: pling argh!

Please insert 10p for another credit

Re lockpicking - are you just supposed to find the right angle or sometihng? We tried a novice lock and there was only one pick, and I eventually got it but not sure quite how. I suppose the right angle did it.

You need to find the locks 'sweet point' do it pops open. By turning the pick you put stress on it, if it's in the sweet point there's no stress and the lock just opens. Slowly move the pick, if it hits something your going the wrong way. Harder locks have a smaller sweet point. I've managed to pick everything I've found so far, as the picking system is the same as fallout and I wasted a while on that... It's really hard to explain, there should be some YouTube tutorials of it.

Not played any of the previous ones but on the pc it looks fantastic. Impressed with the story and how you can just do your own thing. The UI is pretty poor though!
Yep you can do a spell in one hand and a weapon in the other. Just tap the lock and you get an idea if its going to turn. Picks are everywhere though so not an issue.

2560*1440 on " high " setting on a hd 5870 looks fantastic and getting 35 - 60 fps. Will cross fire it when its fixed to see what its like on Ultra settings.

Only bad things - yetis and giants kick my butt every time. It could also steal your life!

Are the rumours about the PC version control/menu system being awful true? I read that you need to get a wired 360 pad to get the most out of it. If so I think I'll probably wait for a bit til it goes down in price as I need a pad as well!

The menus aren't great on a PC but they're good enough I don't find them a distraction.
Lock-picking seems reasonably intuitive, I guess the higher level locks just give less margin for error (until your own skill is at that level at least).
What I've not figured out yet is is the a con/consider system? e.g. if I mouse-over a dragon can I tell if it's way higher level than me? I know there's some level scaling anyway but right now if I see something like a giant/troll/dragon I end up quick saving then having a go and see how quickly I get mashed to figure out if it's worth trying it again.
The vampire disease thing is a PITA to - I hadn't realised I was diseased apart from odd messages and people saying I looked ill (I guess in hindsight that should have been a clue), just glad I read a forum post in time to cure it before it became permanent.
Mind you I'm only level 12 now and already getting a bit bored of it, mostly because the combat feels a bit clunky and I have have a niggling feeling I'm going to regret skill choices later and end up investing countless hours in a crap char :p

What's a crap character though? In Oblivion Mrs Grips chose a race that I thought was distinctly poor and ended up with naff skills but she developed them to an awesome level. She was so good at sneaking that she could walk right up to anyone and kill them without a fight.

varies wildy, there's so many different ways of playing that what 1 person thinks is rubbish may be fine for you. Plus you got the choice of starting out with reasonable skills/stats then run into trouble later on, or you could start with a lowly character with the maximum potential.
I like the level up screen.../...It reminds me of the way 'skills and attributes' are presented in Fallout New Vegas.
FFNV I picked lasers as my weapon of choice but no ammo around at the start of the game, used guns instead but kept putting skills into lasers. After a few levels I would have been able to blow the crap out of any badass badguy with a laser (if I could find one and had the ammo) despite having never used one. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'll wait and see what skyrim is like.

There's a worrying thread on the official forums about the dynamic levelling which has me second guessing how to play. Apparently it's not just your primary skills that count against you (when it comes to determining the difficulty of the mob you're fighting) but your secondary skill and inventory as well. So spend hours working on alchemy and carry around a load of potions (but not done much more than average with your primary skills) and the mobs are much harder than they would have been if you just focused on primary skills. It's crap if true IMO (although admittedly I rarely do all the trade-skill stuff :p ).

I get that open world game play needs some sort of dynamic mob difficulty scaling but it also sucks that fighting a bandit at lvl 20 is just as hard as at lvl 4, in fact it could be harder if you have spent a lot of time working on secondary stuff and not just doing the hack and slash thing.

yeah tricky one for game developers. I downloaded OOO, insanely hard for the first few levels, hit lvl 20 almost becomes too easy and a bit boring, mind you that was on 3rd/4th play so maybe I'm just bored of oblivion.
