Off there Thurs, Fri and Sat day next week - maiden voyage.

Nice digs sorted. Going to watch Antarctic Monkeys at the O2 Academy Fri night.

How else do we fill our time? Nice food, pubs, gallery/culture suggestions please...oh, it's our anniversary too 😉

It sort of depends. Do you find the academic world interesting? If so, just seeing the colleges and the Bodleian will be a good start. But a visit to the Ashmolean is also a must.

If you want a drink, the Turf Tavern is where many students and academic go, but I have always enjoyed The Chequers, just down a small lane off High Street.

St Mary's Church (the University Church) is a place where some of the most important moments in England's history have taken place. It would be worth stopping in there.

The Eagle & Child is where the Inklings used to meet, so if you're a Tolkein fan you may wish to get a pint there as well.

Ultimately, I tend to be there in an academic capacity, so don't know the tourist hotspots so well. Hopefully what I have said helps, though.

The covered market is really nice and there are a few cafes in there worth visiting.

Ashmolean Museum is very good.

I've got an itinerary I put together recently for someone vistitng oxford.

There's enough there for 3 days.

If you give me your email I'll share it with you.

See below:

I've put together an itinerary for you using Google Maps (you'll receive a link separately).
You've got all the points numbered- 1>14.
If you click on each point, you will get some of my comments and a website link for the location.
It's hard to give you an exact itinerary or timings as I don't know what day or time you're going or how you're getting there.
I would recommend 5-6 hours if you visit 3-4 colleges and other sites on the list.
Note that the colleges opening times are quite sporadic, depending on what functions they have on, hence the large numbers of colleges.
Our favorites are New College & Magdalen College, so definitely try and see these.
The 'High Street' has lots of food and coffee spots- none worth recommending as tend to take packed lunch or opt for a budget cafe.
Pitt Rivers & Ashmoleum Museum are added in case the weather turns biblical.
There is also a large new shopping center 'Westgate' if you need some retail therapy (huge John Lewis). Though it's generic and really busy this time of year.

Pitt rivers for sure.

His Dark Materials location spotting is fun.

I live in Oxford.  It's pretty dull, to be honest, and not much to do outside seeing the colleges and museums.  Once you've seen one college, you've seen them all!

The pubs are mostly old fashioned pubs with an added veneer of tourist tackiness.

The only area with any energy is the Cowley Road, where the O2 Academy is.  You should be able to find somewhere interesting to have a drink and food there before the gig.

There are buses to London regularly and cheaply.  Takes about 1hr 15minutes.

I went with the missus a few weeks ago. Not much to do apart from the colleges and museums but that with plenty of food and drink was enough to fill our couple of days.

We drove to Blenheim Palace but I saw it would be £54 for the 2 of us so I turned around and drove home. She didn't seem too bothered.

The Bear pub is my favourite haunt. Walk along the river to the Isis pub if it is actually open, Jericho is worth a nosey around as well.

Threesome with an Oxford Brookes fresher? 😛 There'll be loads of them around the O2 academy on those days, as they'll still be in freshers week mode.

Oxford is best enjoyed drunk, during the summer on a sinking punt full of scantily clad women in Christ Church meadows though....

missing bean for a great coffee

pitt rivers for shrunken heads - I'd recomend not looking at everything; My mind was frazzled by it.  I wish I'd looked up the collection and focussed a bit.

college tour

Tolkien exhibition at the weston library is pretty cool - if you've read the books or seen the films - free & doesn't take too long.  A real insight into his creative mind

Punting if warm

Pitt rivers and natural history museum (same place, free). Much better than the ashmoleum.  Walk to the trout over port meadow for views. G&Ds for ice cream (one near Jericho, one opposite Christchurch, one in cowley). Do one college tour: Magdalen, new or Christchurch (christchurch if you like Harry Potter, they have specific tours for Harry Potter), wander round Christchurch meadows. If you are going at a weekend in autumn go laugh at all the new rowers trying to learn on the Isis south of Christchurch. Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I did like the Turf for the architecture but no atmosphere in any pub. Watch out as all the students have just bought a bike and don’t know how to ride them. I used to go to chez Gerard for food then G&Ds for dessert as it was always good. People watching is good especially this time of year as you might spot matriculation (lots of gowns and hats).

Jump off one of the low bridges that's been blocked off with warning signs saying "Danger don't jump, shallow water, danger of death".

Make sure there is snow and ice on the ground and the water is rushing through after heavy rain. Best to do this with a bottle of champagne or prosecco in hand.

Or you could leave that to the future leaders of our country celebrating sitting an exam...

Please don't actually do this .

The indoor market above is however a good call.

When you come out of the gig, take a right and walk up the Cowley Road for a sit down Kebab in Bodrum. It’s Ace.

The Cowley Road also has some great bars.

Pitt Rivers/ Museum of Natural History are a must, you can fill an entire afternoon in the one building, which I’ve done on several occasions. One tip for the Pitt Rivers - it’s very dimly lit, if you’ve got a small flashlight, one that takes AAA batteries would be ideal, then take it with you, it makes reading labels and seeing clearly smaller items much, much easier.

The varsity club just inside the covered market is a nice place to drink. If the weathers nice go there an hour before sunset and get yourself up on the rooftop bar. Nice place to be to see the spires and its surprising how little traffic can be heard for the centre of oxford. As mentioned already, get yourself to the Jericho area (Raouls - the best cocktails in oxford imho, the wine cafe, duke of cambridge all within one street along with a couple of other bars) which is a 5 minute walk from the city centre and worth it for a few hours drinking and eating.
