If you like art, the Prado's free from Monday to Saturday 18:00-20:00, and Sunday 17:00-19:00. I've not checked the Reina Sofia website but it's probably the same. Don't know about the Thyssen (which is my favourite of the big three art museums) but it wasn't particularly expensive the last time I went. The Retiro park is next to the Prado and worth a visit.

Otherwise it's a great city for wandering around, sitting in an outdoor bar and watch the world go by.

Yeah, we went to the Prado. Obvious thing is obvious, but there is a LOT of art in it - we did the ground floor in about two hours, by which time I was a bit paintinged-out. Worth going though.

This. And standing in a little bar in the evening, drinking excellent, inexpensive wine and scoffing the free tapas.

Have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the Prado - I generally prefer modern art, and as you say the place is huge! Still worth it for the Velazquez and Bosch, though.

Parks, churches, some museums are all free. Metro's dirt cheap in comparison to London and other European cities. You could just wander around the centre for two days taking it all in, drinking cheap but nice wine in one of the 1,000's of terrace bars, and hardly spend a penny.

Look for out for Museo de Jamon - it was the cheapest beer with a snack when I was there in 2016. There's a few of them I think.

I visited the Prado early on in 2020. Took 3hrs to see it all and briefly looks at all the masters/recommended paintings/sculptures on the leaflet.
Rest of the time in Madrid was good. Went to the palace, ate decent tapas, drunk a few beers, visited a micro brewery, went to the park and saw the fallen angel. Skimmed the surface of the city and need to go back at some point to explore further.

I lived there for about 6 months. I have no advice on things to see and do. All I did was hang out in bars drinking beer and wine and eating tapas.

I don't feel my time was wasted 🙂

Wander round El Retiro park and take out a rowing boat.
I went a few weeks ago and went to both the Prado and the Reina Sofia in the evenings when they were free. I don't like museums that much but I spent about 30 minutes in each, saw a few things I liked and then left. It was a good way of doing it.
Go to the botanical gardens inside Atocha railway station.
But mostly wander around and have drinks.

These are mostly eating recommendations:

Churros - very good one, and most famous in Madrid is : chocolatería San Ginés, pasadizo de San Ginés, 5.

This Asturian place was so cheap I didn't think I'd heard the price right! El Ñeru, c/ de bordadores, 5. Great blue cheese and cider.

Bar la ideal - does 'the dish' of Madrid.  Calamares in a sandwich.  C/ botoneras, just off the SE corner of plaza mayor.

There is some mountain biking out in the parque casa de campo... I saw some riders whilst on the way to the zoo and theme park.

Currently here in Madrid and just wandering around the city , so many bars and cafes. Impressive architecture to look at. Staying in an apartment at Lavapies

As said already.... Museum of ham.

Was in Madrid for a job a few years back. Mate and I made it into town and spent about three hours sampling the many different legs of ham and the beers. Can recommend.

Nice.  Not sure what it's like now but 20 years ago Chueca was good for a night out and it's not too far from Lavapies.

That's one of my local loops. Mainly gravel-grinding but there's some fun spots off the beaten track if you know where to look.

Best riding's north of the city in El Pardo park. Proper trails and jump lines.

It's not the cheapest but Mercado de San Miguel is worth a look, even just to walk through as it's a pretty impressive building.

Recommending the Museo del Jamón is a bit like recommending a Spoons to a Spanish tourist in London 🙂

Just the perfect temperature at this time of year, not sure I'd want to be here in July August . Keeping a wary eye out for pick pockets and just a fracas with a few Moroccan youths fighting amongst each other. Quite relaxed in the local bars , doesn't seem to be the bouncers required unlike city bars in the UK
