We're planning on going swimming today and I was thinking of taking my little boy on a flume.
Too young?
You maybe possibly too old.
Why not ask your 2 3/4 yr old, rather than a bunch of strangers on a web forum 🙄
Bloody hell dunc. He's no idea what a flume is let alone what happens at the bottom. Perhaps I'm just after some experiences.
🙄 🙄
Just do it
Send him down, find out at the bottom if he liked it. Tell him it's a slide like they have in the park on the way there.
Ok well, blindfold him, take him to the top and chuck him down 😀
Alternatively show him it, show him what happens at the bottom and then take him to the top and see if he wants to do it.
Simples ?
Is there a minimum height limit?
The decision may be made for you by the lifeguard. If it is a long slide there will be one at the top making sure that the slide is clear before anyone goes down.
My 8 year old just asked where ^ that is!
I take my 3 year old down slides (and did when he was 2 and a half) and it was fine . Judgement required that's all . Have fun!
How good are those swimming nappies?
How good are you a swimmer?
IMO - no. Simple Risk/Fun balance judgement.
He will remember sod all and find you pulling funny faces whilst squirting water at mummy just as fun.
Pooky, where are you going with slides (assuming that it is Manchester area)?
If it is the Manchester Aquatic Centre the big slide has a lifeguard but I've only seen it open once. The little slides (the elephants) are freerange.
Sheffield
Yep from me, but start small. Our little lad 2&3/4 loves them either solo ( for small stuff ) or on mum for big stuff.
Ride with if it's mild AND it has a catch tray thing to slow you down in shallow water.
If it throws you out into deep water/main pool I would be more reluctant/wouldn't do it if I couldn't land on my feet. But I'd assess on the day based on what I could see and knowing my own child's tolerances and personality.
Only after they have done the black run in the morning has he earned the right to nearly drown 😉
Depends on many factors not least of which are the childs reaction to scary/exhilarating things and what the slide actually looks like/what the exit is like
Assuming they cannot swim then there is an obvious added danger /panic/fear moment
ON some you can go down with them
Most pools we've used have the age limits on a sign somewhere that gives an idea. Our local pool has a small flume that under 2 aren't allowed on and under 4s must be accompanied but that mostly is to help them out at the bottom.
If it drops you into a pool a baby floatations vest might be an idea, at least if you take a second or two to get your feet back they will be heading in the right direction.
Took ours on loads at Durinell in Holland when she was 2, on my knee, she was just slightly under the min height limit
She loved it, but she has always been very confident in water, swimming since she was 6 weeks old
I've a video somewhere of us going down with her giggling away and shouting 'go faster fatty bum' at me
Result:
Big flume - too small.
Rapids - fine, loved everything but the last plunge.
Pirate ship - up and down with me.
Baby slide- repeat visits.
All in all, a success. Cheers all
Ok all bets are off 😥
My 18 month old was crying and creating a fuss while queuing for the 'big' slide at Newquay Water world. He didn't want to wait, just wanted to get back on the slide. If I'd have let go he'd have been queue jumping and straight off down the slide.
