On the allotment it's all out war.

(I'm quite meh about it though; if you're daft enough to plant seedlings into the ground etc etc 😉 )

Where have all the hedgehogs gone? They should be eating them.

Not getting all STW, but I see them as something to live with - they're part of the chain and there's only about 3 out of 50 types (according to GQT the other week) that munch on your harvest.

I just don't give them the opportunity, rather than get the 9mm out.

Unlike those evil bastard Magpies. Hanging's too good for them.

Just got in from chopping them in half with a trowel.
My prize strawberry looked fine , the bottom half all gone.

There was a study done by some prof in Oxford during WW2 where he removed all the slugs and snails in his allotment and recorded the numbers found.

The aim was proving you could reduce the numbers and improve domestic crop production.

The result was a year on year increase in slugs and snails.

Go figure

Kilos of them in our garden, I could harvest enough to feed a family every night.

Everything gets destroyed, fruit trees, all the plants, no chance of growing veg. Only survivors are grass and ivy.

Disgusting things, nuke them.

I used to make a habit of catching flies and putting them in the web of "Big George" the largest spider in the garden.
Slugs do not stick to spiders webs.
Shame.

My garden looks like it must belong to Jack the Ripper- there are knives and trowels all over the place for when I go out for the nightly Slugmageddon (TM)

The slimy littly sneak-thieves have had away wit my sunflowers, my onions! beans, loads of flowers (esp the fritallries 🙁 and the ramsons) and the squashes. I'm seriously annoyed. I have resorted to organic iron phosphate based slug bait from Wilko's. I wont use the more common slug pellets for fear of bioaccumlation killing off the hedgehogs which I so hope I have but have yet to see.

four large young pointlessly killed by a cat in my back garden this weekend, no sign of mum either who was a nightly visitor

currently planning cat traps http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rabbit-Mink-Squirrel-Feral-Cat-Animal-Folding-Cage-Trap-/390849955768?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Plants_Weed_Pest_Control_CV&hash=item5b007907b8 and handling them into RSPCA 30 miles away

Do slow worms eat slugs?

Found loads of slow worms in my compost this year.

Not many slugs but my garden is mad on snails!

Top tip - don't be tempted to skimp on the slicing and stamp on them instead. Burst slug entrails can fly a long way and are not pleasant to wash off your face

I hold the cats responsible. They have murdered the bird and rodent populations, that would have kept the slugs down.
I think we should ban cat ownership and door the things now.

Think the most I've collected in one night and following rain, was 240.

Cant say I compute the logic in the research project...esp where the next year there were more - ?

Ive noticed a dramatic improvement in the productivity of crops this year since my cull...lets just hope their numbers don't swell in 2015 ?

Springwatch last night had video a tawny owl chick, mum and dad presenting it with a wide range of food all yummy except the final slugs. Looked like the food came back on it quite badly, owl chick looked like it had a very bad cold! 😯

Yup slug patrol at night with cheap table salt. They have to slime across the patio to reach the veg.

Crushed eggshells are supposed to work.

As a slight aside, I can testify to the effectiveness of cellulose thinners poured into an ants nest. Threw a match on & it was like a mini nuke attack

Wumph. 🙂

We had a wasps nest at an outdoor centre (many many years ago, not my most recent..). It was in a hole, right near the back door of the place.
Boss wasn't up for paying pest control.
A couple of litres of neat achohol and a match on a stick. Like a volcano erupting, complete with flying fireballs. 😕

How about a longest slug competition?
This is from a few years back and that is a wine bottle.

Any idea how many hedgehogs they would have fed ?

It's a bit weird that your counting them!

And presumably rather annoying if due to being distracted the counting has to start all over again.
