As said a three adult passengers are likely to be about the same +/-. I'd try as mush as possible to get as many as close to the middle of the car as possible or steering could get interesting.

Fill the rear foot wells first, then stack them on a sheet on the rear seat to avoid 'saggy arse' syndrome. You don't really want any in the boot if you can help it.

I'll fold the seats down and spread the weight out so its not all in the boot space.

That is the important bit. You don't want that much weight right at the back of the car as it could overload the rear suspension. Also, many years ago I managed to wheelie my mum's escort estate going up a hill with too much weight right in the back. Steering is difficult with the front wheels off the ground......

Wouldnt a local builders merchant be cheaper for that kind of quantity..plus they deliver

If you empty the bags out you'll be able to spread the sand around so you can tailor the cars handling to suit the conditions.

Or open the glove box, take out the manual, and read what it says under maximum laden weight.

That's what I did when transporting quite a lot of gravel about. Our Golf has max 350kg with driver.

I took 20 rubble bags of, err, rubble to the tip in my civic. the wheels scraped the arches going over speedbumps, but apart from that it was fine

As above, check the maximum payload in the manual. It's about 650kg or something for my Passat. Don't forget that has to include you too. Bear in mind there will also be settings for tyres pressure for the fully loaded car, which will be higher than the car's general usage.

I'd keep the sand in the bags.

Loose, it may flow around and cause you to roll the car on a fast corner.

open your driver (or passenger) door and there will be a sticker that shows maximum safe payload.

GVM is gross vehicle mass. Thats car plus passenger plus sand.

There will be another figure that is lower than that - thats the weight of the car, empty.

the difference is how much you can carry!

But the easy answer is in an A3 - no worries at all, you could manage 5 passengers PLUS a boot load of luggage which would be way over 250kg.

For my job we do silly things lke go to the biggest mountain in spain on the hottest day of the year, fill the car with payload, add a very heavy trailer, and tow it all the way to the top to check everything is still OK. 10 bags of sand would be a breeze in comparison! I dont work for audi but Ive seen them there doing something similar - all half-decent manufacturers do the same

Is that the hill near Granada with the big metal bull cut-out?
We went up there with Ciclo Montana for a ride down into Granada & there were loads of Peugeot 308s being tested how you describe.

How is it even worth it for them to do that?

I didn't get any choice in when my order was delivered. It was delivered when the Jewsons truck was delivering to a large site nearby.
