@10 where are you if you're suffering from local forest fires?

I did a short 50min sort of recovery ride yesterday - I wasn't purposefully keeping the watts down to anything calculated like 65% of FTP or anything, but instead just went out for a spin and taking it easy. It was lovely weather for it, just warm enough to wear full summer kit... can't see many more outings like that this year, unfortunately!

Training later with the club, so looking forward to that.

Really enjoying doing this. The headaches have lifted thankfully so I can start doing stuff again.

It's little changes I've made, like walking the littlest to nursery instead of driving "cos I need to be back". That plus the school run means I'm doing a few miles before breakfast. Then a ride in the evening makes for a happy pook.

Another fake commute this morning - watched the sun rise over the building site that will one day be our new office from a safe 5 mile distance, with just rabbits and squirrels for company.

I'm committed to the fake commute thing this week - as I'm working from home I'm riding as if I'm doing my regular bike commute of 20 minutes each way, plus the mandatory half hour. Means if I'm on the bike my minimum ride is an hour and ten so I actually get a half decent ride in each time rather than just half an hour.

Due to a poorly wife I had to take my lad to hospital this arvo and be on parental duties this evening. Have snuck in a dog walk as todays exercise, partly feel like I've cheated, however hopefully only a small blip, as long as I don't catch the lurgy....

Proper dreich day so I kept putting it off. Eventually went out for a 5km walk down to the river and back which was actually really lovely.

Lovely, lovely club run. 4.5 miles uphill, 4.5 miles back down, 2 pints in the club when I got back. Top class.

Early doors walk up Bosley Cloud for me today. We're off tomorrow so hoping to tick a few more Wainwright's.

Also giving Stoptober a go....which for me will probably be much harder than the exercise challenge 😳

I missed my 30mins yesterday, it was just too grim out there by the time I finished work. I was also too shattered by the time I got the kids fed and off to bed that dragging the turbo out the cupboard really didn't appeal either. I shall do extra today...

Just came across this thread.
Was the Chris referred to in the original post Chris Walker who was killed in an avalanche.
If so I was with him that day and what a terrible day that was.
Sorry I've missed the start of this challenge but I'll get started now. In reality I have exercised most days since 16 Sept anyway.
Are you still raising funds for the CW Memorial Trust?

Themightysimmonite - no, this was my pal Chris Bell. Very similar incident, very close by and there was also one survivor. I can't imagine how terrible it must have been to be there. It was devastating for all his friends and family, I've never seen a funeral like it.

I've done some fundraising for Glencoe MRT at the Puffer but not on the 100 Day Challenge threads.

Garage gym for me. Overdid it on the arms and they have been like jelly ever since!

As anticipated my arms and shoulders really ache today. Big light on charge with goal of getting out on the bike after work. I don’t really like night riding so we’ll see how this goes...

Another dreich day. I had to pop into town for something so just walked in and came back via the woods. Quite weird. The weather has kept everyone in so, apart form A9 traffic noise, it felt almost like deep lockdown again.

I didn't feel very committed to my half hour indoor exercise last night having left it a bit late and felt tired. Didn't help when I jarred my right bum cheek from a heavy landing coming down from a handstand. Just about scraped half an hour.

Trials bike again this afternoon, hopping about up/off small ledges. Enjoyed, but tough on shoulders so 39 minutes was enough.

Been stuck at my desk since 8am, so a nice 10 hour stint of work 🙁

Struggling to get motivated but will do some sort of exercise. Once I'm out there I know I'll enjoy it.

*monkey* it's a weird cognitive dissonance, as for many years I was really pretty fit, and it came screeching to a halt about five years ago and what with one thing and another I've never quite clawed my way back and it's starting to dawn on me that aging is kind of happening... Nooooo can't quite believe it.

An hour on the MTB enjoying the last of the sun for a while, kept bumping into people I knew so rather less was actual exercise but there were some big-ass hills in there so I do feel very exercised!

p20 chucked me out of the door after work with my cx having kindly charged my lights and offering to make supper. As a result I extended it a bit to 1.5 hrs and explored some new tracks, got a bit lost and enjoyed the last of the day light. Even managed to not freak myself riding in the dark with my rubbish eyesight.

Not doing very well on this. Been going from bed to desk to dinner table to desk to bed most weekdays the last fortnight basically doing one and a half jobs.

However a new pooch has arrived and I'm now getting in 30minutes + every day walking him at least once. Not exactly hardcore but it's better than it was.

where are you if you’re suffering from local forest fires?

I'm in Colorado. The fires are not near me thankfully, but the smoke has been bad in Denver this year.

This week hasn't gone well. Missed Sunday and yesterday. I've been finding it difficult getting up to do Kettlebells, and working out at night effects my sleep. Just got to get on with it!

Wattbike today, 10 min warm up, 20 min test and 5 min cool down. It was rather demanding. Need to fine tune a few things with it but its proving to be 'enjoyable' so far.

Correction,I see a lot of people are struggling with this challenge.Hour along the river today, weather was nice, having three broken spokes not so nice.Need to think carefully about nutrition and sleep as tiredness plus never ending lockdown can make me grumpy.I wonder if exercising everyday is actually good for us?

It definitely is for me as I got stuck in a real lockdown/WFH rut...not getting out of the bed till 8.30, being unorganised and from June onwards not going out for a walk as much. This has really helped me sort that out. However I am quite happy to just include a half hour walk up the hill on some days which I think means my body is doing ok.

That said, I’ve woken up with a sore throat after last nights ride - ha!

Same here^^, went out last night after work for a quick 20 miles and woke up this morning with a sore throat. Hoping it doesn’t develop into anything else as i could really do without any set backs. Might have an easy one today.

I think it is, but you do need to mix it up a bit (or just stick to walking) and don't try and go out hard every day. Following my own advice, Wednesday was hard, yesterday was an easy hour on the bike, today's a swim and the weekend will be harder long distance stuff assuming the weather cooperates.

It certainly is for me, but you do need to listen to your body.
If you're knackered, as little as a 30 minute stroll will make you feel more awake, will clear your head and give you some fresh air.
I like to have rest days, but those rest days are just lower intensity than normal. Today I am shattered, but having gone for an early run in the rain means I'm a lot less shattered than I would have been if I'd have stayed inside.

I agree with lunge.
And I'd add that variety is essential, and makes it easier.
Even if You're just concentrating on one thing, like running for me at the moment, then you've got to mix it up a bit.
What works for me is fast run, long run, recovery run.
The fast run could be 5k or intervals or anything that pushes speed a bit.
That tends to make me run lighter the next time and makes the long run easier. I always need a recovery run after a long run to shake my legs out a bit, and that tends to be somewhere nice of road and no push for speed or distance. Sets me up bit too go again.
Don't have to stick rigid, but very rarely do consecutive long runs.

I agree with the above! I'm using this challenge to try and get me physically moving in lots of different ways, or at least more ways than I have been.

Today was upper body strength day. 3 sets each of 5 pull ups (pronated grip), 5 dips, 6 bodyweight rows (suppinated grip), 8 push ups (feet raised 12"). All fast up and slow down.

Sometimes I pair two exercises ie pull ups & dips and have 1m30s rest between them, but today paired each exercise with 3+ minutes housework as the rest period! Stops me getting bored with resting and cutting it short. With warm up + cool down. Total just over 1 hour.

Spent all day at the coast doing my first field work for months and months. However decided as that was work it couldn’t count (my own stupid rule!), so after 12 hours out the house and 14000 steps I came straight in and did half an hour of Pilates whilst the pizza dough proved before I allowed myself the first beer of the week. I’m really tired now!

Last few have been quite good, apart from a rubbish run where my calf flared up again. Done quite a bit of cycling and got my son for some good mtb rides. We haven't really been out proper riding for a few months so it's nice to get him out again. He seems to be enjoying it again. Good session at Leeds bike park, then Lady cannings today.

Feel like I've earned my chicken kebab and couple of beers this evening.

It has been really hard to fit something in each day but it does seem to be becoming a habit. Which hopefully is a good thing.

Sciatica playing up today made my foot hell, but it strangely cleared up as the rain stopped so I've just had a 2 mile stroll round the village

Sciatica into your foot isn’t a good sign MCTD. Are you getting some treatment?

Forecast here for the weekend is dire. I don’t mind some rain but getting soaked for the sake of it isn’t fun. Looks like turbo and garage gym, around doing some prep on redecorating our hall, stairs and landing.

From your experience of doing this, any thoughts on best exercise for losing weight?

In my experience, any regular exercise will help with weight loss. Just think of the simple formula of calories in against calories out. A friend of mine was really struggling with his weight and lost 40lbs quite quickly by getting a dog. The 2 daily walks and a few less pints made all the difference.

The rain we've had this week is going to turn the Chilterns trails from heavenly to hellish, so it's looks like mostly road riding and running to keep this up for me & Mrs Db.

stavaigan, I find lower intensity exercise loses more weight. Longer rides at a gentler pace in particular. However, during the challenge I always end up looking trimmer even if I don't lose any weight, regardless of exercise intensity.

Agree with Munro biker, lower intensity longer rides.
Depends where you're coming from, but ime running is a bit weird, in that I think it's probably better to lose a bit of weight before rather than by running. Had a few goes at c25k ages ago and injured through impact. Concentrated on riding and regular swimming (that was great for weight loss) for about a year, then found starting running loads easier. Regular walking helps too.

Bit like Munro now, this time I've lost a bit of belly without actually going down on weight.

@stavaigan I've lost 11kg since last Christmas and I've mostly been running and eating a lot less crap. The STW mantra of eat less, move more has certainly helped me. I've built up to 5k's with some 10k's now and again. I've also done a few HIIT sessions in the kitchen. I can now comfortably use my drop bars which I've never been able to before so I'm taking that as a win!

PS. I'm knackered today so I thought I'd try that pilates video posted earlier! I'm now more knackered!!

I must say 8m really enjoying this. I work a varying shift pattern and this motivation has made me get out every day. Ive ridden or run every day with just one dog walk registered as an activity when i was time crunched.
Ive also used it to stop drinking, so im feeling really positive.
Im hoping that 500kcal per day exercise and not having a frivolous 500kcal in beer most days will help with my weight and dad body!

My thoughts comparing weight loss riding or running is that running works better. I push myself much harder while running than I do when cycling, although it's typically for less time, but also losing weight makes more difference to performance and comfort as a runner than as a rider.

Running. Way more bang for your buck than cycling. Plus it’s much more pleasant than being on the bike when the weather is crap.

Run today. In the running thread someone mentioned they personally felt less impact from running faster rather than plodding along. It rang true for me. Usually I walk before a run, but I didn't bother last time and paid the price. Walked today for 0.35 miles then ran for 5k, stretched on the beach before walking home. Except I got to the stairs along the cliffs and decided to do two stair reps and again on the next set (they're small cliffs). Started walking again before concluding I still wasn't quite satisfied so decided to run to the other side of my Strava privacy zone and then walk home. Got best estimated 5k PB 22:25. I think by walking first I can practice avoiding heavy footed impact and get the muscles required to do so activated.

Also did a run. It's been lashing down all day (flood warnings all around us) but I buckled up and knocked off 6km to make it the 30 minutes.

No way I'd have gone out if it hadn't been for this challenge/thread so it's working as an incentive for me.

This for me as well. Haven't had time today yet, so yoga later.

I'm running out of yoga workouts between Abi Carver and NTC. Anyone other recommendations, preferably without a smarmy American accent. I might even pay for it, I'm really getting into regular Yoging.

I agree. Running doesn’t agree with me, so I just walked. Full waterproofs and my Alaskan wellies (which after 13-years loyal service sprung a leak!) and glad for this challenge that I got out regardless. Hardly saw a soul!

I neglected to put my waterproof trousers on.....what a bright idea that was. Good news is it seems that I was successful in reproofing my Paramo, and the pooches Equafleece is working really well too. Glad of this challenge for making me get out....zero views but still enjoyable, and makes the warmth of home that much more enjoyable afterwards.

Oh, on that note, I did get the daughter reluctantly out for a walk in the rain. Instant smiles, puddles, rivers and most importantly blackberry and apple foraging for crumble - worth the histrionics getting her out in the first place.

Weather was nice for my run yesterday, shorts + t-shirt. Today less so, but not bad overall. 2 hours, 20 miles, under 800ft elevation doorstep cross country on the hardtail. Little more than gentle pace with a quick spurt of effort here and there. Light rain for last half hour.

Day 19 I reckon (my run of exercise actually started on 14th so I could count as as 21 and finish a couple of days early too 🙂   )

Out for 90 minutes today on a wee walk down to the falls in Glen Feshie. Best place to be after so much rain!

Still plugging away at this and loving it. Wet,  wet ride yesterday and short walks punctuating my days - typically with 2st of toddler packaged up about me.

Question: I found a garden roller buried in the garden. It's ugly as anything, so can't be ornamental and it seems to have been bought for a hobbit, it's so short.  I need to bin it, but need to smash up the concrete and brick(!) roller first.

Will my sledgehammer time doing it count towards my 100 days?

A weekend of perfect running weather here in the midlands. Cool, wet and not to much wind either.
A half marathon done Saturday which was bloody lovely.
Sunday I woke with a hangover and planned on doing a gentle 5 miler to clear my head...well, the weather was too good and my legs felt good, so another 10 miles was done.
Debating throwing a real marathon in next week but worried I’ll need a day off afterwards. Hoping it’ll not wipe me it completely and I can manage a 5k the next day!

I'll find that out tomorrow, legs stiffening up nicely at the moment.
VMLM done this morning, 26.2 miles.
I ran it for Macmillan Cancer Support, if anyone fancies sponsoring - there's a link on my strava.

Day 1 for me today after 5 weeks of covid symptoms; had a test which was -ve.
For 4 of those weeks the coughing was really debilitating to the point of a hospital visit to have my respiratory function checked - thankfully that was OK.
Today was an hour on the rigid ss on gravel paths around local lakes.
Plan for tomorrow is either road bike or gym.
This, combined with Sober October should do me some good.

Been doing a daily 45 minute route march up and around Kinnoull Hill every morning since 1 September. Trying to add to this each day - today was an hour on the treadmill (9kj and an hour moving rocks in the garden. My watch says 2400 active calories. That’ll do for me.

Not sure why people who can run Marathons need a half an hour exercise challenge.Surely, rather than a challenge this is merely a warm up?

This challenge motivated me to do a run yesterday night in the pissing rain. Like most times once I was out it was fine and I really enjoyed it.

Steady walk with the kids this afternoon, where I got my ears talked off about Minecraft for an hour 😄
